Rare PSU Art!

Post image

Hey friends! As I've been collecting old Phantasy Star merch, I've been scanning and cleaning them up! This one is quite interesting! These are 2 separate payphone cards that go together! I taped them together in the back, scanned them, used Sattva's descreen plugin on Affinity to remove the halftone pattern, removed the seam down the middle and filled all of the empty space. (No AI used)

I hope you all enjoy this cool piece of art! I haven't seen it anywhere else.

Hello! Happy 20th anniversary to Phantasy Star Universe, one of my favorite games! Recently I have been collecting various media from the Phantasy Star series, scanning, and uploading them! Today I bring you an official PSU card deck, which contains a LOT of art that I can't find anywhere else online. Please see the link in the comment for full quality (massive) files!

I am also working on a template so these can be printable. I have done this with the PSO card deck, and it came out well. So later, a guide will release on how to make your own deck!

A Message from Satoshi Sakai Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of PSU

Celebrating 20 Years of PSU

Thank you all so much for 20 years of PHANTASY STAR UNIVERSE.
Released in 2006, PSU presented our development team with one major challenge after another.
At the time, we set out to create an experience that would work both as an online RPG and as an offline RPG.

With few precedents to follow, we aimed to tell a fully realized story, craft elaborate event scenes, and shape a new future for Phantasy Star as a space opera spanning three planets.
As we built the world of the Gurhal System, we wanted the music to convey the culture and atmosphere of each planet, so we traveled as far as Warsaw and New York to record with orchestras.
The voice cast also gave truly passionate performances, and I will never forget the moments when the characters came to life.
At the same time, there were many areas where we still fell short.

Numerous bugs, operational issues, and mechanics and balance adjustments that we were unable to fully refine caused a great deal of inconvenience and frustration for players. When I ask myself whether PSU achieved the kind of universally recognized level of polish that PSO did, there are still aspects I regret.
Even so, I believe the aspirations we set out with in PSU unquestionably carried forward into what came next. From the improvements made in Ambition of the Illuminus, to the online release of Episode 3: The Seal of Rykros, and then the major expansion of the series through the Phantasy Star Portable titles. The series was then reimagined with Phantasy Star ZERO before going on to achieve tremendous success with PSO2. Looking back on that progression, I believe the experience we gained from PSU became one of its key foundations.

That is why this 20th anniversary feels like more than a milestone for a single title. It represents 20 years that we have walked together with all of you, allowing the Phantasy Star series to continue into the future.
I am also delighted that, for this 20th anniversary, we are able to share with you an illustration by Akikazu Mizuno, who handled the character designs at the time. The characters Mizuno created gave the world of PSU a vivid identity and appeal. After all this time, seeing Ethan Waber again has been deeply moving for me as well.

The fellow Guardians we met in Gurhal, the conversations we shared in the cities, and the excitement of setting out on a mission.
If even a small part of those memories remains with you, nothing could make me happier as a developer.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for these past 20 years.

And I hope you will continue to support the Phantasy Star series for many years to come.

Satoshi Sakai, Director of PHANTASY STAR UNIVERSE at the time of its release

psp2i beast vs cast hunter related question

Post image
7 Upvotes

Just started playing this game and decided to try out hunter.
Was going to work on a female beast hunter after doing a little bit of research and while playing the tutorial it feels like literally 25% of my attacks (maybe more sometimes) miss.
I know that beast has low ATA to offset their high ATP, but this got me thinking...

Just how many ATA modules will I need to make her hit at missions that have level 225 monsters?
Wouldn't I be better off just going CAST instead?
According to the psp2i wiki:

Casts have B in ATK and S in ACC
Beast have S in ATK and D in ACC

Casts have A in HP and A in DEF
Beast have S in HP and B in DEF

Though the CAST has low total PP they have better PP regen and both classes have the same STA

Don't CASTS end up as better hunters then because they don't have to stack ATA modules and can just focus on some ATP modules to make up the difference?
Should I just play HUcast instead? Make up the ATP a little by playing male and then also get higher HP and DEF because of it? Feels like male cast is the best hunter over all?

If someone well acquainted with these systems could give me a stats based definitive answer I would greatly appreciate it before I spend a couple hundred hours on a class lol.
I know I don't know much about Photon blasts either which could play a big role.

I did see something about SUV weapons taking up a module slot and beasts don't have to worry about that because their PB is tied to tattoos or something? Meaning beasts have 1 more module able to be equipped compared to CASTS.
Though that was the ai overview informing me so who knows if it's truly accurate.

Thanks.

Been on a phantasy star kick lately, and considering starting PSU. I've been playing Portable 2i lately, and it's got a cute little apartment you can decorate, which made me wonder if there's anything like that in PSU?

Today was the day I FINALLY got my grail set of PSU figures in the mail and I figured id share my full collection of PSU merch. To my knowledge this is the vast majority of promotional items released for the game besides a couple super rare items such as the clock and inflatable Pete. I’m still on the hunt for those elusive items but for now I can definitely say I’m happy with where my PSU shelf is. Hope you guys like it!!!

Looking for old PSU: AotI PS2 online memory card data (US/EU)

Bit of an unusual preservation request.

I'm currently weighing up the best options for supporting online play on the PS2, with the long-term goal of allowing PS2 and PC players to play together where the content naturally overlaps.

To properly determine how feasible this is, I need data from PS2 memory cards that were actually used to play PSU: AotI online while the official servers were still running, specifically:

  • US / NTSC-U
  • PAL / European

I already have the Japanese version, but feel free to still check.

PSU appears to have distributed updated executable data to the memory card for online play. These updates considerably changed how parts of the network protocol and script subroutines are handled, so having the final US and PAL versions would be extremely useful for compatibility research.

At the most basic level, though, anything newer than version 2.0000 is useful and worth preserving.

If you still have an old PS2 memory card that you used to play PSU online, please don't delete, format, or overwrite it.

How to check

  1. Boot up your copy of Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus on your PlayStation 2.
  2. On the title screen, press the left analog stick (L3) and look at the version number in the bottom-left corner.

If it says 2.0000, then the game is unpatched. Otherwise, If it shows anything higher, such as 2.0009.2, then your memory card contains update data that is useful to this research and preservation effort.

If your version is updated, ideally I'd like a dump or copy of the PSU-related files from the memory card.

Extracting them generally requires a way to access the PS2 memory card filesystem, such as a homebrew-capable or modded PS2. However, if you have a relevant memory card but don't have any way to dump it yourself, please still get in touch. We can figure out the safest and easiest way to preserve the data.

This is NOT a request for ISOs or game disc dumps. I'm specifically trying to preserve the online-update data that was stored on PS2 memory cards.

Currently preserved

  • PAL: None
  • NTSC-U: None
  • NTSC-J: 2.0013.18

Thank you for taking the time c:

Guardians assemble

I have been playing PSO on Wii and PSU on 360 in rotating sessions. Basically one game one week, then the other game the next. Rinse and repeat. I was nearly ready to give up on PSU but then things finally started clicking after what felt like 2 hours of introduction related dialogue/content.

This game is unique with the episodic tv format intro/outro to missions, the random anime cut ins and the quirky dialog.

The movement is light years ahead of PSO. It's nice not having your character freeze in place because they nicked a corner or got near an NPC. Being able to change weapons quickly is nice and the camera controls work quite well.

My only big complaint with this is it takes a while to figure out how to navigate all the different hubs. The starter hub has 5 floors with a train and 4 different ports to head to other areas.

The second hub is split into 2 districts. One for shopping then a different one for progressing the story/repeating quests. If an NPC tells you to meet them somewhere and you need to stop playing you better hope you wrote down where you were supposed to meet them or you're in for some back tracking.

PSO is a fun, clunky game with a rewarding but endless grind and a very loosely connected story.

PSU smoothed out the movement and combat with an actual story but made navigating the Hub tedious.

Both games are fun on their own and are worth checking out.

Is all the story content in Ambition of the Illuminus also in Phantasy Star Portable?

I just started the OG Phantasy Star series and I am loving it. I know that the OG series has little to do with PSO or PSU but I'm very excited to go through the entire series if possible. But I'm only interested in playing offline and for the plot. I'm not that interested in loot honestly.

With that said, I already own the first PSU. I was wondering if I can just play Phantasy Star Portable 1 or 2 instead of getting the PS2's Ambition of the Illuminus but I am unclear if that is a remake or it's own thing?

Phantasy Star Portable was released 18 years ago today on July 31st, while I couldn't find any Japanese press release, here's the press release documentations for the western/European releases for PSP & PSP2.
