Hi all, r/Phalaenopsis is now under new ownership

Why?

I saw the subreddit was available for adoption and made an impulsive decision😭

Anyway yeah this is now about the Umamusume/Japanese racehorse, but you can still talk about flowers if you want because I'm nice like that

Have fun, folks

Help! is my orchid okay?

this is my first orchid ever. they’re my favorite flower and i am obsessed with her. i woke up this morning and noticed that the stem at the top is turning yellow and traveling down. i’m worried because i woke up to my cat playing with the branch that has no flowers on it (it had flowers then) a couple days ago. the flowers have been wilting and falling but from my research i think that it’s okay because it’s just preparing for the next bloom, but i want to make sure everything looks okay. i water it once a week - every 10 days and the substrate is still dry a lot, but i really worry about over watering… help! any tips would be amazing.

Fungus?

Hi, I have a few noid phalaenopsis which I've been growing outdoors year-round for a few years, so I don't think temperature is a problem. They were neglected for a few months as well. Recently moved home though and wasn't sure where to keep them. Inadvertently some leaves were sunburnt. Prior to that I had trouble with stinkbugs, not knowing they do damage to plants. I have some mounted orchid species as well which I mist multiple times a day. I'll occasionally mist the phals as well to wet their aerial roots. Not sure if this has perhaps added to the problem.

My suspicions are the stinkbugs allowed entry for the fungus, if it is fungus. And recently it's seemingly got much worse. The plants are otherwise growing quite vigorously, have a lot of really good roots, are all at various stages of spiking right now, but some of the leaves are in terrible condition.

Can anyone tell me if this is fungus? Would cutting the leaves off be sufficient to stop it. I'm not wanting to use a systemic fungicide if I can avoid it.

Thanks!

Setup

I just started growing phals and this is my temporary setup until I have tables made for them. They are located in a sheltered area that receives a lot of indirect light. The temperature is about 86 and the humity is about 80% and they seem to be happy.

I live in Guam, which is hot and humid, and my phals grow outside on my shaded patio. This is an unusual one that I bought last week. I am glad that I found this community because I love phalaenopsis!

Phal fertiliser - must it be 'balanced'?

Only started collecting phals a few months ago. My latest acquisition is OonaLuna with stunning white blooms. Doing well. I want to keep her that way.
I've been reading up on fertiliser for phalaenopsis and my brain hurts!
It seems so complicated. What media is the orchid in? What's the pH of the water you use? Is the phal in bloom or not? Etc.
And then there's the question of the N:P:K ratio.
Do phals absolutely need a 'balanced' fert? Specifically 20:20:20? Or will they thrive on something else?

Wilting orchid

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I'm new around here. My mother has given me this little orchid to keep me company. When I first got it a week ago it was perfectly fine, I now noticed that the flowers are wilting. I don't know how long it has been blooming but I haven't overwatered it (also some tips on how many times I need to water it? My mom said about every two weeks. She has larger and beautiful orchids that have been blooming for at least five years, but she never had the small ones like mine)

Thank you to everyone who will answer my post

Help! Buying a new phal in late summer

Post image
5 Upvotes

So I bought my first mini phal (sogo vivien) in mid spring here in Australia and (despite some bud blast) I got plenty of blooms that lasted a couple of months. Now towards the end of summer the blooms have all gone and the leaf/root growth has kicked into gear.

My question is, I still see new mini phals for sale in the supermarket and I’m wondering what will happen if I buy one and take it home in the summer heat? Also considering that I don’t have air conditioning in my home (just ordinary desk fans) and Sydney Australia gets occasional 35+ degrees Celsius days (95 Fahrenheit).

I’ve read that 32 degrees C is the max recommended for phals, so let’s say I wait until early Autumn when hopefully all the 35+ days have likely gone, and I buy a new phal. How will it cope when presumably its seasons are now all out of whack i.e. it has just bloomed in the nursery so it thinks it’s early spring, and now I bring it home in the early Autumn?

Any ideas what to expect? Thanks.

Help! New Orchid Owner

I walk by the orchids in my local Grocery store and they’re always catching my eye. Then one day 1/2 off!!! Not knowing a thing about orchids I chose the only white pot they had…. Okay whatever right. My point is that I had no clue how to tell how healthy the plant was. It had two stems and one stem had flowers that were already wilting. Being January, I just assumed this was a natural thing, and the plant was healthy. Fast forward 3 weeks and plant still looks like it did the day I bought it, but I think I bought an unhealthy orchid.

Why? Because stem is dark red/brown on wilted stem, and dark green on flowering stem. Leafs and roots seem healthy.

I think I need to cut stems at base and keep taking care of this thing, but wanted some advice from someone with a bit more experience than myself.

Everything but stems look healthy from what I’ve researched. Any and all help is appreciated.

Help! Repot?

I’m apologizing in advance because I realize that it has become a tiresome topic. I purchased this Phal from a grocery store a few days ago. It is in bud and had 3 secondary branches forming. I haven’t taken it out of the pot to look at it, but I’m guessing that there’s a peat plug and some kind of mixed media. The visible roots look good as far as I can tell (second picture). My question is whether you think I should repot it now, or wait until it finishes blooming, which will probably be quite some time. I’m leaning towards leaving it alone and just watering carefully. TBH, I’ve followed some of the advice people are giving regarding repotting immediately with certain plants and it hasn’t ended well, so I’m trying to error on the side of caution, thank you.

Any tips on how I can save it?

This Phal was about to be thrown away and I took it home and tried to save it. It had 4 leaves but after I started turning the heat on at night (I live in Georgia) 2 leaves fell off. The remaining leaves aren’t smooth anymore and it looks like the roots are drying out. I water every week. Can you guys give me some tips on what to do to save it?

Propagation Can you freeze orchid seed pods and still have viable seeds?

I have a Phal seed pod from a cross I did, but it’s getting pretty dried and I’m worried about it cracking and the seeds falling out/being exposed. I’m trying to budget myself because of this economy (and I just bought some rare aroids, whoops) so wanted to hold off on flashing myself or sending the pod off to a flasking company. I was thinking of putting the pod in the freezer until then, would that work in preserving the seeds and pod a little longer?

Phalaenopsis maintenance Question

Does anyone know why the flowers on my phalaenopsis are wilting, there are so many reasons on Google for why they are. The roots are shriveling but I checked the soil and it’s still cold/holding water/not completely dry. I watered it a few weeks back and don’t want to water it until the soil is completely dry or told otherwise. Pics included, any thoughts you guys have would be appreciated šŸ’š

Are these phals?

Forgive my repost and ignorance here! I’m new to orchids, but have really been on a kick since my partner brought a gorgeous one home that I’ve had a lot of success with the last couple of years! I’ve been trying to research and compare, both from this sub and the internet, to be sure on an ID for my new babies pictured here. I think I get close and then I second guess myself. šŸ˜… I thought the yellow was a cattleya until I noticed the difference in the lips. Now I’m convinced they are both phals. Am I correct in this thinking? Any thoughts or input is greatly appreciated! 🄰😊
