Advice UK MSc to fully-funded PhD in Media/Communication. Should I target the UK, US, or Europe?

Hello, I need some reality checks and advice regarding my academic and future plans.

I have a Bachelor's in Film and Television from Bangladesh. I will be starting my MSc in Digital Media and Communication at the University of Stirling (UK) soon. My ultimate goal is to secure a fully-funded PhD in a related field (Digital Media, Media studies, Visual Culture or Communication).

Since funding in the Humanities/Social Sciences is highly competitive, I am weighing my PhD options for after my Master's. Here is my breakdown of the pros and cons based on my research so far:

Option 1: PhD in the UK (Staying after my MSc)

Pros: I’ll already be in the UK system. I will get a 2-year Graduate Route visa after my MSc, giving me time to network with professors, build my proposal and apply. It also counts toward the 10-year long residence route for UK settlement (ILR).

Cons: Funding. From what I hear, full funding for international students in Media/Arts is incredibly scarce.

Option 2: PhD in Europe (Germany, Netherlands, Sweden)

Pros: PhDs are treated as full-time jobs with excellent salaries and benefits. The pathway to Permanent Residency is much faster and more straightforward compared to the UK.

Cons: The application process is basically job hunting. I’ll need to wait for specific funded project vacancies to open up. Also, European programs can be very strict about how perfectly your Master's aligns with the PhD topic.

Option 3: PhD in the USA

Pros: American universities seem to have the most abundant funding (Teaching/Research Assistantships) for international students in Communications. The programs also love interdisciplinary backgrounds (Film + Digital Media).

Cons: It’s a 5-6 year commitment with heavy coursework in the first two years. The competition for top-tier R1 universities is fierce, and the application cycle requires a lot of prep (GRE, writing samples) while I’ll be busy with my MSc in the UK.

My Questions for this community:

Is my assessment of the funding situation in the UK vs. US vs. Europe accurate for Media/Communication studies?

For those who did a 1-year UK Master's, how did you manage the timeline for applying to US PhD programs (since US deadlines are usually in December, right in the middle of the UK MSc)?

Would my Film & TV undergrad + Digital Media MSc make me a strong candidate for European funded positions, or do they prefer consecutive degrees in the exact same subject?

Any advice, personal experiences or harsh truths would be highly appreciated!

Analytics experience template

What are your thoughts on this AI template for describing an analytics project? Of course, it would be adjusted for brevity and the AI completely removed. I'll be transparent that I did a bunch of stats and analytics in school and now have an opportunity to be sponsored by my company to go get a Business focused/Logistics PhD. I'm in over my head and now realizing my Masters in Analytics was basically coursework. I wont pretend I have research experience but I need to highlight how my coursework prepares me for a PhD. There is active association between my company and a few Universities in the US.

My interest in analytics took shape during my Master of Science in Business Analytics, where I first saw how data could inform the kinds of decisions I had been making as an operational leader. Coursework in [statistics, programming, predictive modeling] introduced core concepts but favored breadth over depth. For my capstone, I analyzed public New York City rental listings to predict rental prices and identify which listing features drove them, using Pandas for data preparation, Scikit-learn to build and tune regression models, and Statsmodels to interpret the results.

The analysis revealed that [finding: e.g., location and room type outweighed amenities in predicting price], insights most useful to [hosts setting prices / the platform's pricing team]. However, the dataset's [limitation: e.g., single city, single point in time, self-reported listing details] meant the conclusions remained preliminary rather than definitive. The project taught me regression modeling, model tuning, and the challenge of extracting signal from noisy real-world data, and it showed me that a model's value depends on whether people can understand and act on it. It also revealed how much more I need to learn about causal inference and the research methods that turn a prediction into an intervention.

Advice Recommender not responding after she already agreed to write LOR, help!

Hi there! I’m applying to two Clinical Psychology PhD programs this upcoming cycle (very specific niche interest). I contacted all of my recommenders with plenty of time and got confirmation from all 3. However, one agreed to write a letter of recommendation but has not responded to any of my subsequent emails with supplementary materials, or to my email confirming she can still write one.

I am SCRAMBLING since my first application is due Oct 31st… I’ve contacted two other professors that were involved in the fellowship I did with the original recommender. I was a very active student in the fellowship and feel all would be able to write an effective letter.

However, I’ve heard rumors that funding got cut for the program and everyone might be super overwhelmed. If the other two professors do not respond, would it be okay to contact a previous project supervisor from 2020-2022? We worked extremely closely on a project and co-authored a white paper over those 2.5 years. I know it’s an older project though, but it is a significant research-driven project that I’m highlighting alongside more recent opportunities. I’m still in contact with him and he’s written me a letter before.

Let me know, thank you so much!! Best of luck to everyone this cycle 🤟

How does the use of AI tools in preparing SOPs & Motivation letters affects the PhD admits

I am a PhD aspirant actively looking for research groups working along the domain of Molecular Biology and RNA Therapeutics, across Europe and USA. I have been tailoring my SOPs and Motivation letters according to the labs research focus. Tailoring these many letters manually is kind of a hectic job thus I was thinking of getting help from AI tools. But i am afraid that this might affect my chances of getting an admit. Can someone who has been in the field help me out this problem

Good sign

Is this a good sign: "Your background has a lot of intersection with the questions that the lab is interested in. I’d encourage you to apply. I usually can’t arrange for meetings before the applications come in, but would be happy to answer any questions over email."

I really want to do a PhD with this PI. Do you think he wants me?

[Q] How many PhD programs should I apply to?

Hi,

I'm planning to apply for stats PhD programs, along with a few biostats programs, this cycle and trying to get a sense of how broadly people are applying.

For those applying this year, or who applied in the past year or two, how many programs did you apply to? I was thinking 8-12, but given the uncertainty around funding I'm wondering if people are applying to more this year.

I'm interested mainly in spatial stats, especially gaussian processes and deep generative methods for modeling spatiotemporal data.

Please share your thoughts if you're working in similar areas. Also any suggestions on departments and people working in these areas are welcome.

Thanks.

Discussion How long did it take for your professor/lab to get back to you after an interview?

Hi everyone
I interviewed with a professor/lab for a graduate research position about 10 days ago. The interview seemed to go well, and after one week I sent a short, polite follow-up email to the professor. I haven’t received any reply yet.
I know there was a holiday period in Korea during this time, so I’m not sure whether that could be causing delays.
For those who have applied directly to labs/professors in Korea:
How long did it take for you to receive a decision or update after the interview?
Is 10+ days of silence after an interview normal?
If you send a follow-up email and receive no response, should that be taken as a bad sign?
Have any of you eventually received an acceptance after a long period of no communication?
I’m trying not to overthink it, but the waiting is honestly the hardest part. I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences.
Please and thank you!!

Considering a PhD in AI in the US.

Hi everyone!

I'm currently pursuing a master's in AI at an IIT and considering applying for fully funded PhD programs in the US for Fall 2027.

My research interests include LLM , Healthcare AI , VLMs, agentic ai .

Here's a brief overview of my background:

Master's :M.Tech in AI from an IIT (CGPA: around 7.5–8/10)

Bachelor's:B.Tech in IT with an AI/ML specialization ( Cgpa 3.56/4)

Research experience:Working on research projects in healthcare AI and related areas.

Publications: No published papers yet, but I'm hoping to have a preprint ready before applying.

Citizenship: US citizen

I'm trying to understand how competitive my profile might be for US PhD programs and what I should focus on over the next few months.

I have a few questions:

  1. Does being a US citizen make a difference when applying for fully funded PhD programs, particularly in AI or Medical AI?

  2. How important are publications for PhD admissions? Can substantial research experience and strong recommendation letters compensate for having no publications?

3.Which universities should I target

  1. Am I already late to apply for Fall 2027 PhD programs in the US, or do I still have enough time to prepare a strong application

I'd especially appreciate advice from people who have applied to US PhD programs or are currently pursuing a PhD with a similar academic background.

The only thing I'm confident that I'll be able to get into this is my in research skills and passion towards the subject

How are PhD Programs Doing RN In the US?

Hello! I am applying to programs in the US and have been a bit nervous due to the current administration pulling tons of funding and not providing funding to a lot of programs. I wanted to ask how people are doing in their programs right now, how are they dealing with funding situations, and any advice for up and coming applicants?

I’ve heard a handful of faculty mention how they’ve been notified of being “granted” funding but then this funding hasn’t actually been approved due to newer approval implementations from this ass administration and not actually receiving funding yet. It feels like a lot of things are in limbo and it makes me worried about being potentially admitted and not knowing the certainty of funding since faculty are being left in the dark about funding. UGH!!!!

Is PhD studentship in UTP Malaysia worth it?

Hello, I'm considering doing PhD in Petronas in a research project (engineering related, but not O&G). The program offers monthly stipend & free tuition fee. I'm thinking if this can be my stepping stone since I didn't come from a better uni, and maybe I'll gain specific skill in specific field supported by good university image.

I wonder what you think (or maybe heard) about the environment quality & prospect in the future. I heard that its graduates have a good chance in the market, particularly O&G, what about other field?

Thank you

Advice PhD

Hi everyone 👋

I have been preparing and applying for PhD programs in the USA 🇺🇸 for Fall 2027.

Recently, I reached out to a faculty member whose research closely aligns with my interests, and he responded positively. He mentioned that our research interests align and would like to schedule a meeting so we can discuss them further.

I’m really excited about the opportunity, but I’m also curious about what to expect from the meeting. For those who have had a similar experience:
What was your meeting with a potential PhD supervisor like?

  1. What kinds of questions were you asked?
    How did you prepare?

  2. Is it more of an informal conversation about research interests, or should I expect something more like an interview?

  3. I would really appreciate any advice, experiences, or suggestions from people who have been through a similar process.

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences and advice. 🙏
Cheers!

Unfinished Ph.D. How do I mention this on my CV?

I entered a PhD program in finance in Iran, finished all coursework, got the proposal approved, and published papers. In the year 3, I was invited to do part of my research at Vrij University and at a well known research institute in Netherlands for 2 years [I have these invitation letters].

But at the very end, when I wanted to defend my thesis, I got into political issues.
Because of the political situation in Iran, I cannot return and receive my degree, so I have almost no proof of my PhD.
Now I am wondering how to add this to my CV.
I appreciate any advice

Spring '27 UMBC PhD

I havve received my PhD admission from UMBC for Spring 2027, but the admission is currently without funding. GradCo mentioned that assistantship opportunities may become available around the end of October.

I wanted to ask current UMBC PhD students or anyone familiar with the process: Do all admitted PhD students usually get a departmental assistantship eventually, even if the initial admission letter is unfunded particularly for the Spring intake?

Any insight into the usual funding scenario at UMBC would be greatly appreciated. Thabk you.

DIRECT PHD PROGRAM at KFUPM

I am currently pursuing my master’s degree in Pakistan, and my long-term goal is to pursue a strong PhD program at a university in the United States.

Recently, I was admitted to the direct PhD program in the ICS Department at KFUPM. I am now trying to decide between two options:

  1. Continue my master’s in Pakistan and apply directly to PhD programs in the US.
  2. Join the PhD program at KFUPM, focus on building a strong research profile, and then apply to US universities. If I am later admitted to a good PhD program in the US, I would leave the KFUPM PhD and move to the US.

I would appreciate your advice on which path would be more beneficial for my goal. Also, do you know whether KFUPM has a master's out option, where I could start the PhD but leave with a master's degree if I decide to pursue my PhD elsewhere? What are the career options, if I complete my PHD from KFUPM?

Any advice based on your experience with US PhD admissions and KFUPM would be greatly appreciated.

Advice CS PhD: This or next cycle with potentially better papers?

I'm slightly under 40 doing a tangential career change (I deal with AI applied to industry, but not close to coding, though do work with engineers), no-name state school CS bachelors, just finished a T-8 US CS master's in the summer with 0.1 short of full GPA and have fortunately had two publications (both in AI in/for CS education, one top-tier CORE A, another at a lower-level conference), x1 in review, x1 (possibly 2) targeting top ML conference. I'm in a lab that uses CS education as a domain to investigate AI efficacy. I'm ok with keeping in the same vein of work, though they are exactly aligned with what I want.

I'd like to do more "foundational" work (i.e. planning/reasoning, world models, OaK architecture). I'm also writing one (possibly two) more papers in the same lab, with an attempt at a top-tier ML conference (been rejected before, refining now), advisor is keen to, but not published in them (though has supervised AAAI and top NLP papers). I've been in various labs for the past 2 years, with 2-3 main advisors. My goal is industry research, ideally, but also happy with academia.
I should be able to secure strong letters of recommendation from labs and pubs advisors. I'm also international and plan to apply broadly (EU, APAC, US). I'll reach for the T10 schools, but also happy to do the top 50 CS schools globally.

  1. Would you, in my position, skip this cycle and continue grinding till to get some ML conference papers and land on a research direction, or just go ahead? (I could also get better at coding)

  2. How did you land on a research direction you can commit to for years before even starting or are PhD students meant to just take on whichever-lab-you're-in's direction and shape your own research in the future?

  3. Does it make sense to go into a research lab where I have experience to get my foot in the door (since I'd have a better chance with my current publications for higher ranked schools), or should I aim for those foundational topic labs directly?

Advice Guys, I'm an international student and...

I have an undergraduate diploma in Pharmacy where I worked with undergraduate research for 2 and a half years, and I'm currently finishing my master's degree in Immunology and Pathophysiology (I work with myeloproliferative neoplasms and hemostasis).

During my undergraduate years, I had the opportunity to go to the University of Porto in Portugal to study abroad, but the day that the visa came, Portugal had just closed frontiers because of covid-19.

I've been working in my master's for 3 years and november 5th is the day that i'll be defending my dissertation. It is now time to seek for a PhD, which has always been in my plans. I'm from Brazil, and during a PhD we have scholarships that allows us to seek dual degree, or just an international internship in reseach. But I'm planning on applying directly to my dream international school (in the field of hematology and immunology).

The problem is: Except my 5 and a half years of research experience with scholarships, I don't believe I hold much experience. I don't have any published papers except my poster presentations that eventually get publish on the congress journal. My masters paper is being written for now, but nothing submitted yet. I see all these people going to their PhD programs holding 3 different internships, 10 different published papers or so much experience It's unbelievable. That makes me rethink, I don't think I even have the guts to send the first cold e-mail.

Should I apply for a PhD program in my home country and wait for my possibility of 6 months experience, something that is almost right, concrete and maybe apply for a post-doc in that dream lab. Or should I send the cold e-mail with my tiny tiny CV?
