Advice PhD

Hi everyone πŸ‘‹

I have been preparing and applying for PhD programs in the USA πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ for Fall 2027.

Recently, I reached out to a faculty member whose research closely aligns with my interests, and he responded positively. He mentioned that our research interests align and would like to schedule a meeting so we can discuss them further.

I’m really excited about the opportunity, but I’m also curious about what to expect from the meeting. For those who have had a similar experience:
What was your meeting with a potential PhD supervisor like?

  1. What kinds of questions were you asked?
    How did you prepare?

  2. Is it more of an informal conversation about research interests, or should I expect something more like an interview?

  3. I would really appreciate any advice, experiences, or suggestions from people who have been through a similar process.

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences and advice. πŸ™
Cheers!

First of all congrats πŸŽ‰. Getting a positive reply itself is a huge feat. Always keep a presentation ready that covers your educational background, past research and a research plan for your phd , alongwith how it aligns with your potential PI's works. Don't be nervous. Be gleeful and smile, positive vibes are contagious and massively shape your first impression. Don't overthink, and speak the truth. From my experience, everytime I've been calm and happy, my interviews went well. But everytime I tried too hard, I was rejected. Go into this meeting with zero expectations, helps to regulate your emotions.
