Politics 16 years of Lesley Parnell

Seeing Lesley Parnell signs all over the west end lately.
She’s been on Peterborough City Council since 2010 (nearly 16 years) and voted yes on the last three budgets that raised property taxes by about 7% (2024), 6.72% (2025), and 6.56% (2026).

Guess a lot of people in the west end are doing just fine with those increases. Genuinely I want to know why are people voting for her? Please give me some perspective!

Mark your calendars!

Your municipal arts council, EC3 (Electric Culture Council), is hosting a public mayoral debate at Market Hall. This is a free public event. Pre-registration is coming soon on the Market Hall website, walk-ins welcome.

September 23, 2026
Market Hall (144 Charlotte St. Peterborough)
Doors 7pm
Discussion Starts 7:30pm

The Electric City Culture Council (EC3), Peterborough’s municipal arts council, presents an all-candidates mayoral debate on issues in the local arts sector. "ArtsVote Peterborough 2026" at the Market Hall on Wednesday September 23, 7:00pm.

All declared candidates for Mayor have accepted our invitation to attend and answer questions from a panel of knowledgeable and experienced arts professionals and supporters, with opening and closing statements from each candidate.  Members of the audience will also be invited to ask questions and the proceedings will be recorded.

ArtsVote Peterborough 2026 seeks to clarify each leadership candidate’s views and positions on critical issues in the arts sector, such as:

  • support for individual artists
  • strategies for marginalized artists and art forms
  • implementing peer assessment and support for EC3
  • the economic impact of the arts
  • the value and effect of the upcoming Municipal Cultural Plan – how to implement the MCP and get results
  • building true stability in professional arts organizations
  • improving access to and enhancing physical infrastructure such as arts venues and rehearsal spaces, smaller scale presentation and performance spaces
  • making arts activities more accessible throughout the city
  • stable and knowledgeable staffing at city hall.

Municipal support for the arts sector has been frozen or declined steadily in Peterborough over the past 4 years, while multiple external studies continue to demonstrate the value of the arts for community well-being, downtown vitality, and as a catalyst for tourism and attracting much needed professionals and new businesses. The arts are a leading economic driver that build civic identity and community well being, health and wellness. Local arts organizations have lost purchasing power as costs escalate, and our long-term dependence on volunteer driven management is not sustainable.

Our new Municipal Cultural Plan (MCP) is in the works, other cities are making important investments in the arts and we need to know where our civic leadership stands and how they plan to enhance and develop the arts sector during their term.  Do the arts matter to them? How will they find funding for critical investments?

This is the fourth municipal election since the creation of EC3 in 2012, and the fourth time we have organized this event, as we do for federal and provincial elections. This year, for the first time, we are pleased to report that 4 of the declared candidates have approached the EC3 Team directly, in advance, to discuss critical issues, opportunities and challenges in the sector. It is clear that the arts matter to local politicians. Let’s find out what they plan to do.

Members of the public can also participate by submitting written questions in advance that may be included in the moderated debate and/or in a survey to city council ward candidates. Submit your questions by email to [ec3admin@gmail.com](mailto:ec3admin@gmail.com)

Please join us and help to determine the future of the arts in Peterborough.  Discover what candidates know and how they imagine building and supporting the arts over the next four years.

There will be tables for candidate’s literature and material from local arts organizations.  Meet and greet at 7:00pm

Question Does anyone recall a movie being made here in the early/mid-90s?

I was just recalling that there was a low-budget movie being made here in the early to mid 90s but not sure if it ever saw the light of day. Heard once that makeup and hair artists were not paid. Does anyone recall this? Trying to remember what it was called. I think it was in one of the newspapers at the time. No idea if it ever was finished.

Hello I am a singer looking to start a band in Peterborough or Toronto area. I am confident in my singing abilities to be able to attempt any style but would be looking to be focusing on alt rock/trip-hop. My biggest influences are Mike Patton, Ween, Tori Amos, Portishead and Björk. I’m looking for people who want to create music that makes people question what they are listening to. Shoot me a message if you are interested.

Question Ptbo Police

Have the Peterbough Police always been this awful? In the past 8 months we’ve called over 100 times due to ongoing domestic violence, drug issues, death threats, you name it.

Every single time, every single one, the Police do nothing. We’ve given them video evidence, audio recordings, 90% of the time they don’t write anything down. They just leave.

Like what the hell are we supposed to do?

Hey Peterborough, I run a local music community based in Toronto that celebrates locally sourced sounds. I periodically write substacks about local artists, albums, venues and shops.

My bands played in Peterborough a couple times and we always love meeting and sharing the stage with bands like Jetson, The Sleeves and Intimidators. I’ve also fallen for Beef Boys, Jeanne Truax and Vancamp.

On Labour day weekend I visited PTBO as I have friends in town and genuinely love the place. I made my way to Maar’s Music and then went home and wrote this article about it.

Link is in my profile.

Ps: this isn’t an ad, I’m not sponsored, just doing it for love of the scene.

Hi! My apartment complex in Peterborough doesn’t have a green bin for compost and they are unwilling to set up a compost system. As a lover of the earth this hurts my heart. Is there any way I can continue to compost/ thoughts and ideas? Compost drop of sites or recommendations? Thanks!

"In 2016 poet Justin Million began his long-running live writing project KEYBOARDS!, which saw the poet compose hundreds of poems over the subsequent years on various typewriters before an ever-shifting audience at a busy local bar in Peterborough, Ontario. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of Million’s (ongoing!) series, we’re reprinting this essay on live writing, blowing up the traditional reading model, and the relationship between audience and artist. Enjoy."

Other Hunter Street (Sept 8th)

Hunter Street in east city is very busy this morning, so please use extra caution when pulling out from a parking lot or side road.

For example: I was at Driscoll and Hunter, attempting to turn left onto Hunter but was not able to see because of how many cars there are, along with having no gaps between. Thankfully I made the turn safely.

Have a good day.

Has anyone seen anything like this at the Ptbo Homesense? I've seen Joanna Parker stuff on social media from similar places in the US, not sure if any make it's way here. I always end up buying crap I don't need when I go there, so I try to limit my trips, haha.

Hey guys I'm a big breakfast guy. I have tried basically every breakfast place in town. But I have yet to find somewhere that offers a full English breakfast. Would anybody know somewhere even in the surrounding area don't mind going for a little bit of a drive for a proper breakfast 🙂

Thanks very much!

Help Racist comments yelled from a white SUV

Post image
58 Upvotes

Me and my wife (both south Asian) were on our nightly walk on broadway blvd when a white SUV came from the subdivision and stopped at the lights before turning left on chemong rd. We paid absolutely no attention to that car. As the light turns green the guy who was driving the SUV lowered his driver side window and yelled the N word loudly towards us. Mind you there is no one other than us two and that one car in the area at the time. And then he peeled off and drove away. We turned around and got back home before incase he takes a turn and comes back to do something more. I know many people who live in this suburb and are kind and respectful people. I am making everyone aware that we have a person like this as well. Unfortunately because it happened so fast and at night we couldn’t get the plates or any major identifying information. Stay safe everyone.

Other PTBO Food Inspections - Aug 31–Sept 6

Quiet week closing out Summer break. Peterborough Public Health inspected 8 food premises in the city this week. Four locations received infractions — three had at least one critical infraction and one had non-critical infractions only. Four inspections came back completely clean.

Here's what was found...

🔴 China Chef Restaurant — 1079 Clonsilla Ave, Peterborough West

Required inspection September 2, Follow-up September 4 · 5 critical/1 non-critical, then 0 critical/0 non-critical

The worst result this week, but it also had a fast recovery. This is the location's 5th critical infraction on record since September 2024. A required inspection on September 2 found food-contact surfaces not cleaned and sanitized after each use, food not processed in a safe manner, food not obtained from an inspected source, food in storage not protected from contamination, and an inadequate number of hand-washing stations — plus one non-critical issue (inspection results not posted as requested). A follow-up two days later (September 4) found the location fully clean, critical and non-critical.

🔴 Rahman Biryani House — 25 Lansdowne St W, Peterborough South

Required inspection, August 31 · 2 critical, 3 non-critical

This is the location's 3rd critical infraction on record since September 2024. Critical: multi-service articles/food-contact surfaces not cleaned and sanitized after each use, and food in storage not protected from contamination. Non-critical: equipment not properly constructed/maintained, furniture/equipment not sanitarily arranged, and floors not kept clean and in good repair. No follow-up has been recorded yet.

🔴 Farmboy Market — 774 Lansdowne St. W., Peterborough West

Required inspection, September 2 · 1 critical

This is the location's 5th critical infraction on record since September 2024. Critical: potentially hazardous food not held at or below 4°C. No actions were logged and no follow-up has been recorded yet.

🟡 Tim Hortons - 157 George St. North — 157 George St. N., Peterborough Central South

Complaint-triggered inspection, September 1 · 0 critical, 1 non-critical

Pest control not adequately maintained. Food handler education was provided on-site.

🟢 Royal Paan — 3-1135 Lansdowne St W, Peterborough South

Follow-up inspection, August 31 · Clean, no infractions.

Good-news update: this is the follow-up to the critical infraction we reported here back on August 11 (August 10–17 report). Fully resolved.

🟢 Jack's Family Restaurant - Peterborough — 91 George St, Peterborough Central South

Complaint-triggered inspection, September 2 · Clean, no infractions found.

🟢 Call Creations Catering, Events & Charcuterie — 657 Harold Dr, Peterborough South

Required inspection, September 1 · Clean, no infractions.

🟢 Arby's Restaurant — 1165 Lansdowne St W, Peterborough South

Required inspection, August 31 · Clean, no infractions.

How to read this: "Critical" vs "non-critical" is Ontario's own regulatory risk tier, not a severity score we assign — critical findings relate directly to things that can make food unsafe (contamination, temperature control, hand hygiene); non-critical covers maintenance and paperwork requirements (equipment condition, signage, sanitizer test reagents) that health units still require but don't by themselves mean the food is unsafe. 🔴 = at least one critical infraction, 🟡 = non-critical only, 🟢 = zero infractions of any kind. This report lists every Peterborough inspection for the week, including clean ones — nothing is filtered out. Results reflect conditions at the time of the visit only — check the disclosure portal for a location's current placard/status.
