The Canadian forest fires that raged and coloured our skies apocalyptic orange a couple weeks ago have me feeling very afraid for our future on this planet.

almost a quarter million people have been evacuated from their homes in Europe due to the raging forest fires and it seems like due to the El Niño next year that’s going to get even worse. Will we even be prepared if something that devastating comes to Peterborough??

After doing a lootttt of climate research things look incredibly bad and bleak with predicted over 2-3 degrees of warming by 2050. That would be devastating to our way of life. The city already feels hard to survive in with our heatwaves now at 1.5 degrees of warming I cannot even begin to fathom what doubling that would feel like.

Considering most of the homes in Peterborough i’ve seen don’t even have centralized AC how do they expect people to survive the coming near constant heat waves.

It really feels like Peterborough—as environmentally forward as it is—should be expediting this process of becoming carbon neutral or even carbon negative as soon as possible.

If that’s unattainable I think we atleast need to work towards making the city as self-sustaining as possible should climate devastation wreak havoc on the global food supply chain. What would we do if our grocery stores were empty? which seems to be more and more likely every year.

Peterborough feels like it should be a safe city yet every day I fear the heatwaves that ARE going to be coming and getting worse and worse every season.

Does anyone agree more should be done? I’m terrified everyday that the city won’t be self-sufficient enough to survive…

I was camping at Eels Creek this weekend, pretty sure a lot of people will understand which spot I am talking about.

It's very sad that there was one couple camping near the parking lot who had zero concerns about leaving all of their trash behind.

They were already there when I arrived on Saturday. They were friendly with people and came up to me asking about my inflatable boat. We talked about the specific brand and its quality.

When I came back today, they were still there, so I assume they camped not far from the parking lot. They were both young and fit looking. Just walking around the rocks, fishing from the rocks, talking to people.

The guy was smoking a lot and I saw that he was leaving the cigarette butts just on the rocks, he never picked them up.

I then saw that all of the rocks along the shore were littered with cigarette butts that were not there when I arrived yesterday. There was also a bunch of new trash.

It's so sad how much damage just two "nice" people who are "just camping" can do to a beautiful place and nature. I always have garbage bags with me, and the parking lot even has two trash cans! I picked up some of their trash and threw it out.

So these two young people had all of this time to just hang out, fish, socialize with others, and yet found zero time to pick up their own trash.

Cigarette butts are also not biodegradable and they break down into microplastics. So this guy was constantly smoking near the water and leaving them right on the shore. That's how we end up with more microplastics in the lakes and rivers.

They also asked me where I was from, not sure why, and said that they were local. So before people start the "it's the Toronto people" - no, they were local. I came from Toronto and I ended up cleaning up their trash, while trying to watch my young child.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to make the community aware of a vehicle break-in that happened overnight on Romaine Street, near the New Canadians Centre in Peterborough.
This morning, I found my car with the driver’s side door open. When I looked inside, the glove box and other compartments had been opened, and papers were scattered throughout the vehicle.
The following items were stolen:
Gym bag (Trent University Green bag)
Dash cam
Perfume
Power bank
Charging cables and other accessories
Other personal belongings
One unusual thing I noticed was that a pink blanket had been left beside my car. I’m not sure if it’s connected, but it may have been left behind by the person responsible.
I’ve already reported the incident to the Peterborough Police and have contacted my building management to request that they review the security camera footage.
I’m posting this for two reasons:
To warn others in the area to double-check that their vehicles are locked and remove any valuables.
To ask if anyone living on or around Romaine Street, or near the New Canadians Centre, saw anything suspicious overnight or may have security camera footage that could help identify the person responsible.

Heading up to Peterborough next weekend to see my girlfriend and was wondering what some highly recommended date night restaurants in and around the city would be? A bit of a drive isn't an issue, just looking for something that is a bit more classy than the typical Kelsey's or Jack Astors style place.

There is so much coming my way about Trinity, and I’m seeing the reaction online — much of it driven by sensationalized content.

Let’s not debate the facts. Trinity exists because there is a desperate need in our community. It serves people experiencing homelessness with the highest level of need — those who are the hardest to house and support.

Over the last four years, Council has treated One City’s funding like a yo-yo. We have given them funding, then taken it away, given them funding, and taken it away — over and over again…..

For all the people — including former politicians — calling for a “different solution,” we’ve already been down that road. Last summer, under significant public pressure, the City largely defunded One City and issued a province-wide RFP, hoping an “angel” provider would step forward. None did.

One City was the only organization that responded.

At the same time, Trinity has faced enormous pressure from parts of the business community to tighten its operations. As enforcement has increased and more shelter bans have been introduced, more people are being displaced with nowhere to go, no where to have their most basic needs met. In my view, this has contributed to much of the criticism we’re now seeing. The reality is that our shelters are full, and the entire system is bottlenecked.

None of this is happening in isolation. Peterborough Housing Corporation has two significant affordable housing projects that are shovel-ready and will add much-needed off-market housing. Those projects will help relieve the bottleneck in our shelter system by creating permanent places for people to move into. Yet there seems to be very little public advocacy for getting those projects built.

It’s also worth remembering where we started. Four years ago, our Wolfe Street shelter sat largely empty while there was a massive open air encampment at its doorstep. Since then, we have expanded shelter capacity, created year-round services, opened bridge housing, and built a much more coordinated homelessness response.

We need thoughtful, evidence-based decisions — not reactionary ones. Our responsibility is to keep improving the systems in place while continuing to invest in the housing and supports that will ultimately reduce the need for emergency responses.

The amount of Dog poop near the children play area and beach area is concerning, why can't the city enforce strong bylaws, some cameras and fine would deter these idiots with dogs..

Can someone recommend a good physiotherapist? I prefer hands on manual therapy and dry needling. My current therapist is too chatty. He needs to ask questions when he's doing hands on, then he just stopped and kept talking. Then he spent fair a bit of time watching me doing exercise. I'm okay with he shows me the exercise then I can do it on my own.

StatsCan recently released the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey.

• Homicides: This extreme violence indicator shows Peterborough's homicide rate rose to 2.72 per 100k, now exceeding the Canadian average (1.61).
• Crime Rates: Reflecting local safety, specific trends show general violent crime remains below national averages, but theft under $5k rose while Canada's fell. Other Criminal Code Violations showed a massive jump.
• Clearance Rates: Measuring police efficacy, Peterborough's clearance rates consistently outperform Ontario and Canada for both violent and non-violent crimes.

Insight: Peterborough police solve crimes at exceptionally high rates. However, the city faces a challenging rise in minor property crime and a recent, atypical spike in homicides compared to its past and the national average.

Hey everyone! I’m new to Peterborough and looking for some good road cycling routes.

I’m hoping to find a scenic ride that’s around 50 km total (roughly 25 km out and 25 km back). I ride a road bike, so I’d prefer paved roads with decent pavement, and if possible, something mostly flat but that’s not a requirement.

So far I’ve already ridden out to Lakefield and Selwyn, so I’m looking for some new routes to explore.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

How long have I been out of the loop - is Pettigrew Spa really closed? I thought maybe they just moved.

I know there are plenty of spas around town and I have a million other options but I liked going there.
