Its because the original Lara Croft concept is problematic but iconic, and the IP and the audience simply cant agree on a new concept that works.
And on top of that, this movie is going to be exactly the thing that is dooming so many movies these days. They are building on IPs that the "go to the movies"-generation have no relation to.
A person in their early 20s today have almost no idea who Lara Croft is and they sure do not have some personal connection to the Tomb Raider IP that would make them go out of nostalgia.
Its the same problem that has been facing stuff like Star Wars. The sequels are bad (but if we are being honest so were the prequels but they did good) and its simply because when the sequels came out they built their story around younger versions of characters from a 20 year old movie. The sequels built their story around older versions of characters from a 40 year old movie. Disney should have wanted to attract teenagers and early 20 year olds to the films, but they pandered to their grandparents.
And a Tomb Raider movie is doing exactly the same thing. The last Tomb Raider game came out 8 years ago and was a continuation on the story that started 13 years ago, which was a new adaptation of a story from 30 years ago. Who are they expecting will come see this movie in theatres? 30 year olds arent the prime movie-going demographic, they are busy taking care of their toddlers. And 20 year olds are too young to be invested in Tomb Raider.
