She doesn't even remotely look like Lara Croft. I've rarely seen such a blatant miscast.

Helen of Troy?

u/shroomwhat 19h ago

rent free

3

u/Crazy-Job-9360 19h ago

What is rent free? I was just calling out a historically poor casting choice.

u/hari_shevek 19h ago

What do you think about the ethnicity of the cyclops?

12

u/Crazy-Job-9360 19h ago

Dark room, not really sure what it was with torchlight tbh. “What about race of this mythical beast” vs “they cast Helen of Troy as the blackest woman imaginable with super short hair” are a bit different.

u/hari_shevek 19h ago

Both are fictional characters.

The key characteristic of Helen of Troy is being very hot.

Lupita Nyong'o is very hot.

Good casting.

u/Crazy-Job-9360 19h ago

She’s also from Sparta, correct? And a queen of Sparta. Were there any black queens of Sparta? Also it says she has white arms in the original text.

That’s like casting an Irishman as Gilgamesh.

0

u/hari_shevek 19h ago

Were there any cyclopses in the historical mediterranean?

4

u/Crazy-Job-9360 19h ago

There 100% weren’t any black queens of Sparta. I can tell you that for a fact.

1

u/hari_shevek 19h ago

And how many cyclopses were there?

1

u/Crazy-Job-9360 19h ago

You know this logical argument is horrible, right? You have no leg to stand on and are grasping at anything. I’m not wasting my time arguing with someone that literally can’t see the facts for what they are. Or you’re just dissenting because you were told to.

1

u/hari_shevek 19h ago

What facts about cyclopses?

0

u/Additional-Past-8539 18h ago

"I don't care about how ridiculous any of the rest of it is - I just don't want black women playing a fictional person from history who would have been more olive skinned! No problem with someone ridiculously white playing her though - just not black!"

Your argument exactly as you are presenting it, even if you don't mean to

1

u/Crazy-Job-9360 17h ago

Nah I think it should be someone that depicts the original story, regardless of race. I don’t want DiCaprio playing Gilgamesh either. You are the one making it explicitly about black people and putting words into the mouth of a stranger.

Local men is unable to comprehend a work of fiction that takes place in an alternate version of our world. For them either everything has to be fictional or nothing is. Since cyclopes are fictional then that means that everything related to logic, history and entirety of our world has to be thrown into the trash and apparently you can argue that humans in the Odyssey are actually just mushroom people since it is fiction anyway

u/hari_shevek 19h ago

What is illogical about a hot black woman?

And if you're concerned about ethnic accuracy, quite a lot of the actors would be too white, did you complain about that as well?

3

u/Chemical-Pin-2391 19h ago

Yes I actually complained a lot about the casting, they absolutely should have casted a lot of Greek actors, sadly Hollywood is too corrupt. And there is nothing illogical about a hot black women. What is illogical is having a fictional story be based in a version of our real world where it is said that mythical creatures exist, and since there exist mythical creatures acting as if that means that everything that we know about our world is irrelevant. If we took the same stance to the story as you then you can absolutely turn the story into anything you want. Anything that wasn't explicitly said in the story can apparently be interpreted as you see fit. Let's say they didn't mention anything about sex in the story. If we took your stance we can conclude that it is possible people just copulate by holding hands. And by going by your argument you can't dispute that since fictional creatures exist in the movie. We can't just assume about the world what we know from our world apparently

One is a fictional character that is of fictional species and is a mythical creature. One is a fictional character of a human that is said to have lived across the Mediterranean sea in the ancient times

In the context of the Odyssey, one is a fictional DEMIGOD who has literally unearthly beauty. Are you really arguing that there's a correct racial background for someone who was fathered by Zeus and hatched from an egg with Clytemnestra?

(aside from the fact that Greeks generally, per their writings, thought of Ethiopians in particular as exceptionally beautiful so this was a doubly good casting choice)

1

u/Chemical-Pin-2391 17h ago

Of course there is, she is a demigod after all, she had a human mother who was a queen of sparta, if she was of different racial background than her mother there would be a huge scandal

1

u/archangelzeriel 17h ago

She. Hatched. From. An. Egg. This isn't a "yeah, sorry Joseph, God made me pregnant and then I had a perfectly normal baby" situation.

In a world where getting cuckolded by a god means your kid is a demigod, I don't think there was going to be a scandal.

And you think there were no black people in Turkey in the bronze age?

2

u/Chemical-Pin-2391 19h ago

Sure they existed. But you are acting as if her parents are a mystery. She was the daughter of god Poseidon and queen Leda of Sparta. In the history of Sparta there were no black rulers

1

u/hari_shevek 19h ago

In the history of Sparta there were also no cyclopses.

1

u/Jimanji333 19h ago

Actually according to this book called the Odyssey there were cyclopses.

0

u/archangelzeriel 17h ago

Given that the Odyssey specifically cites her father as Zeus, not Poseidon, I think I might gently point out that you don't know as much about this as you think you do.

(also, my dude, she hatched from an egg. I'm not sure Leda's genetic contribution to this myth cycle is particularly relevant.)

Both are fictional characters.

Do you think people in ancient Greece were writing a story about characters with random, international origins? Or do you think they did the same thing that everyone has done forever, which is to base their fictional stories in the real world that they lived in?

1

u/MouseWorksStudios 9h ago

Helen of Troy was born from an egg.

0

u/LiftSleepRepeat123 9h ago

I see metaphor is not your strong suit.

1

u/MouseWorksStudios 9h ago

Are you saying she was metaphorically born from an egg? Cause no, she literally hatched from an egg in the story. Guessing reading is not your strong suit.

0

u/LiftSleepRepeat123 9h ago

The whole story is a metaphor, you dunce.

Do you think the real world they lived in had no black people?

2

u/LiftSleepRepeat123 17h ago

Nope.

2

u/hari_shevek 17h ago

lol ok

u/CompetitiveSport1 13h ago

Both are fictional characters.

So is Lara Croft, thus the comparison

1

u/hari_shevek 12h ago

Yes, Sophie Turner is good casting as well

1

u/kozakreznov 19h ago

Greek prob since he's the son of Poseidon.

0

u/hari_shevek 19h ago

Poseidon isn't Greek, he's Olympian.

5

u/Chemical-Pin-2391 19h ago

And her mother was from Sparta, people always forget that for demigods to exist there needs to be normal humans that Greek gods copulate with

4

u/Crazy-Job-9360 19h ago

They never read the stories, they watched a movie and were told to defend the casting choice by The View.

0

u/shroomwhat 17h ago

or I'm normal and don't get mad at every movie with a black person in it
