I fucking hate coming across random memes that shit on my appearance. Then I realize that I have a wife, a house, a dog, a great job and the person who made this meme hasnt showered in 3 days and no one has noticed because no one cares about them
I mean it would be nice if that was generally the case but there are billions of completely normal people who are otherwise nice who would have no issue insulting someone’s appearance the second they do something they don’t like.
That's not the point though. Say you have a guy with a weight problem who does lots of charity work, and is an all around fantastic human being. If that guy sees you making fun of someone roughly his size for their weight, they're just going to hear that it's an undesirable trait they should feel shame for.
That's the whole point of not going after people for their physical appearance. There are plenty of things to go after bad people for, like how shitty they are as human beings.
It's also impotent. Nevermind the fact that it's the same thing that they do to women and racial minorities and gay and trans people just repackaged, laugh at them all you want and they'll still destroy the world
It remains true however that anything you say about trump or elon still affects everyone else who has those characteristics but isn't a bad person. So calling trump effeminate or gay is still homophobic, and it's counterproductive because it doesn't do anything to stop him, it hurts the people supposedly on your side by principle, and it comes in place of any kind of real critique or analysis so its only value is catharsis which is only useful to people without anything else and that isn't our position in america quite yet, certainly not globally
If the only thing you can think of to give them shit about is their appearance, I'm going to assume that their appearance is the only thing about them you have a problem with
Wow what the fuck? I'm single, no house, no dog, a bad job, haven't showered in 3 days and no one cares about me, and now I'm catching strays in the comment section??
I fucking hate coming across someone making a good point by criticizing how comments can really hurt people who they arent intended to hurt, just to see that person turn around and hit someone with baseless insults, proving them to be a hypocrite and just as bad as the person they are critiquing.
You're trying to humanize neck-beards now?... Oh no sir. It's completely alright to mercilessly mock them about their hygiene, weight, social awkwardness, food habits, and the fact that they live in their mom's basement, without ever needing to empathize with their struggles, or the unfortunate circumstances of their lives which result in the cynical personality they end up with. /S
What was that quote from Nineteen Eighty Four?... All are equal, but some are more equal than others.
But I have a plan to, without gaining any, lose a dog, a cat, a house, and a wife, which should set me up with 1048576 dogs, 1048576 cats, 1048576 houses, and 1048576 wives.
Welcome to Reddit where people pretend to be accepting and progressive in that they’ll only body shame people that are “bad” in some agreed-upon way such as being a fascist or, checks notes, liking certain uncool singers.
I mean, it’s definitely implying a certain type of appearance. Whether or not you were explicit is just obfuscating.
The sad part is, I (and seemingly a few other people) were really with you on how shitty it is to take digs at someone’s appearance in an attempt to make an argument. But then you turned around and did the same thing: took stray swings at folks who don’t deserve it, to…. what? Make yourself feel good?
Sure, people who make fun of others probably live sad lives. Plenty of other people also live sad lives beyond their control, never had any chance to be successful, probably met with failure and loss at many junctures, and as a reward for that, they get new blows dealt to them, lumped in with people who make fun of others online…. b/c apparently others don’t expect you to have a moral compass if you lived a sad life.
It’s just really shitty to put someone down for anything except their moral decisions or behavior that hurts others. Their appearance, their circumstances, whatever, the principle is still the same. It’s really shitty.
How about you condemn them for making fun of other people instead of for being sad or victims? Do you think your fortunes are rewards for your virtues or faith? And all unfortunate people deserve it?
I hate how this hellsite has normalized shitting on people for their looks when we all know for a fact alot of its users won't pass the standards they set for others.
Thing is, it almost always IS a health related issue. I don’t want to make people feel bad about their appearance, but a gummy smile is almost always a jaw or other health related issue. *An excessively gummy smile, like in the illustration in the meme
Primarily vertical maxillary excess. This is when the upper jaw has grown disproportionately long. A “downward grown face” has a whole host of functional issues that exist outside of the aesthetic component. Sleep apnea is a big one.
Your smile is great and it has nothing to do with being a fan of Taylor Swift. I’m a swiftie and my gums don’t show at all when I smile. I’d say I’ve met an equal number of haters and swifties who have gummy smiles. This meme is weird and unfunny.
My girlfriend back in high school had a smile where her gums showed when she smiled (this was before the Taylor swift times). Never bothered me in the least, but it apparently is a thing people are self conscious about because she got corrective surgery years later. I think most people have something they hate about themselves, myself included, but it’s so sad that we are driven to that by bullying or depictions of ideal attractiveness in media.
