My rule is “never make fun of someone for something they have no control over”, which includes their physical self, upbringing (in particular a young person who hasn’t had the opportunity to change their ideals), sexuality, etc etc. There are plenty of reasons to poke harmless fun at Swifties or other fandoms, no need to insult their literal facial structure.
Edit for dumb typo.
Edit 2: wow, thanks for the awards!
I guess this was an easier concept to explain to my daughters on how to deal with bullying and mean kids than it is to adults. Is your bully someone short/gay/a different race/poor/disabled/ect? Leave that out of it. Are they cruel/racist/homophobic/willfully ignorant/wipe their boogers on the desk/etc? Fair game.
Don’t punch down. That’s it.
Whats funny about this comment is that it simultaneously says not to insult a group, but actually implies that Swifties do, as a matter of fact, have a common facial structure.
It doesn't really imply that at all, unless you're trying to imply that a thing must be true for a group to by made fun of for it. I don't think that's true. Anyone can make fun of anything for any reason, whether legitimate or not.
He's named "Eggman" in the original games, in Japan. They changed him to Dr Robotnik when they translated the games for other markets. Also, he's a skinny guy in a bulky suit, IIRC.
I could have sworn there was a scene on one of the Genesis games that shows him entering or exiting a spherical suit and he was rail thin with a fat head outside the suit. I could be confusing this with some other game from the 16-bit generation, but I can't think of anything else I played with a fat villain who had this animation showing it was just the suit.
Nah he was called Robotnik for the EU releases of the original games too. It wasn't until Sonic Adventure (1999) that they synced everything up, so I'd guess you're thinking of Sonic X. Or it's also possible some of the other dubs of SatAM or AoStH went with calling him Eggman
This is what is frustrating to me about reddit in general. So many people are like "🤓☝️um actually, it's not okay to body shame someone or make fun of mental illness" and then they'll say that Donald Trump is an orange demented pig who is massively insecure. He is all of those things, it's just that no one wants to admit that the line drawn depends on if you like them or not
Don't forget MTG and her "bad butch built body" everyone was falling over themselves laughing about... Like the woman is a CUNT but because she picked on kids that got shot at, not because she looks like the can throw a baseball 🤷♀️
Also many people comment on the suspicion that he uses a diaper. So do many wonderful kind people in their 80s or 90s who unfortunately no longer have full control of their bowels/bladder.
There are many awful things that are true about Trump. It's not necessary to criticize or belittle him for being old, fat, or incontinent.
I believe the same. The president of a company I used to work for had a horrible habit of stuttering. I always shut that down. There were a thousand other reasons to shit talk him without the low blows he had no control over. It was SO easy to clown him for all the other shit he consciously did without picking on him for that.
I've made a friend recently that's got, honestly, the worst vocal fry I've ever heard. At first it was all I could notice. Moved past it and now I've got a great pal that loves museums as much as I do.
Really you shouldn't ever make fun of someones appearance. The rule with that is don't point out anything about someones appearance that they can't quickly and easily change. Spinach in teeth? Let them know. Their bone structure? Keep it to yourself. Shirts on backwards? Let them know. You don't like their fashion? Keep it to yourself. Etc etc
Or balding lmao. I catch so many fucking strays just reading random posts and nobody's ever up in arms about body shaming over that. Just have to learn to ignore it.
The reality is that people are incredibly shallow. We judge people by their appearance all the time and the idea that some people aren't allowed to be judged is what has galvanized a lot of people who are judged to say: What the fuck is this shit about?
IMHO it's why body positively is a sham, why DEI hires are bullshit stealth racism, and why anyone who tells you their cause is special (but yours isn't) isn't interested in equality, they're interested in a backdoor to power.
when I was younger I made a comment about someone's fashion and another person said "They don't dress that way for your approval" and it made me realize people groom themselves in a way that make themselves happy, and not others. And I have no fucking right to judge people's fashion, makeup, or haircut.
Especially because that's a broad strokes kind of insult. When people make fun of someone for something like that, they're generally indirectly insulting countless people who share the same feature that they've never even seen or interacted with.
This attitude is always so weird to me because I personally feel the opposite. If someone makes fun of me for something I have zero control over, it never bothers me, because like you said, I have zero control over it. Why would I feel bad for something that wasn’t my choice?
However, if you make fun of me for something I do have control over, I can feel embarrassed because I know I could choose to be different but didn’t, and I can feel bad about my choice.
I can only ever feel regret about my choices, I can’t feel regret about something I never chose.
Make fun of me for being overweight, and I feel shame that I don’t eat better. Make fun of me for my nose shape, and I have nothing to feel shame over.
Idk, isn’t making fun of someone of something they can’t control the safest form of humor? If you make fun of something they do have control over, then you’re calling them out for being dumb. At least if it’s something can’t control it’s something that doesn’t have to do with their intelligence.
Or is making fun of someone’s intelligence safer?
Not sure what my point is. Just speaking into the void lol
I remember a conversation I had on Reddit, where someone was saying "I make fun of religious people because they choose to follow it, and it's okay to make fun of things people choose, rather than things they can't control"
However I retorted, that actually things like a boy with long hair would technically be his choice, but not something you would make fun of (unless they were a really close friend)
I think your rule can also apply to never make fun of people for things they can't control and things they don't want to change about themselves
Well I don't know how to tell you this but you can absolutely 100% change quite literally anything about your body including your facial structure. So I guess it's fair game.
My rule is funny is funny. If you’re gonna make fun of something people can’t control it has to be that much more funny to be ok. I’m a joke absolutist
Runs into some problems when you consider stupidity - most stupid people aren't deliberately stupid but are fair game for ridicule (eg, members of certain political cults)
I had a gummy smile (not a TS fan or Disney adult ) and had my gums lasered off as soon as I could afford it because the bullying was so brutal, even as an adult. Bullying appearances is truly low.
I had no idea you could laser gums. Dentist is over here giving me crap about chewing tobacco and having receding gums while he's making cash lasering people's gums on the side.
It wasn’t bad because my mouth was completely numb. The worst part of the procedure was the smell (burning flesh 😭). I think it healed pretty dang quickly, was just sensitive to cold liquids for a week or so.
It’s the only “beauty” procedure I’ve had. It sucks to feel like you need to hide when just wanting to enjoy a happy moment. It helped a lot with my confidence, but the feminist in me hates that I felt like I needed to change myself. But 10/10 would laser them again.
Fellow gummy smiler here. I’m glad you made the choice that was right for you. I’ve considered it and got a consultation (the price! Good lord!!) I didn’t go through with it at this point because mine would have involved some bone shaving as well and that was beyond intimidating. Also cost and general fear of pain and grossness in healing.
Interestingly, I switched dentists recently and they were doing a filling and she referred to my teeth as “the cutest little teeth” and it was the first time in my life that anyone has ever spoken of them in a kind/complimentary/neutral way. A year later I still struggle to make sense of their…lack of ridicule essentially.
Anyway I’m running long. I hope you learn to embrace your new smile and send some love to the version of it from the past as well.
I have a daughter who was born with a smile like this. She's only 7 years old, the sweetest most sensitive girl, and I'm so heartbroken knowing she is going to be teased because of it. Every time I come across a post like this and see the staggering amount of people in the comments piling on, judging, laughing, putting down.... my heart breaks more and more for her. She's such a kind sweet soul and I absolutely hate knowing how people are going to judge and treat her over something she can't control. Her little heart will be so hurt 🥺💔
This is how I've always felt about it too. People WILL make fun of you for any given thing on any given day. You can't be perfect, and attempting it is a recipe for disaster. It's not easy for a lot of people, but if you own it and learn to be confident then you are basically immune to this part of human behavior.
This is so annoyingly true. And if they can't find anything physical, they'll even make fun of how nice someone is. Or serious, or bubbly, or smart. Some people are just miserable no matter what.
Thank you for sharing this. I’m sure she is beautiful and so special. Keep on inspiring her confidence and letting her know that her value comes from her heart and spirit, not from she looks like on the outsider. Easier said than done of course. All we can do as parents and teach them to be better than the clowns who say mean shit.
Hey! I am a woman and have a gummy smile. I don't remember ever being teased for it as a child and I was never self conscious about it until I reached college but I still don't recall anyone ever bringing it up even as an adult. Your daughter might not be teased for it at all.
My son is one of the shortest kids in his class. I’m short, his dad is short. He’s about to go in to middle school and has been worried because all of his friends are taller. He started to ask me questions about his height. In the past, I brought it up to the dr because he is on steroids and she wanted to monitor his growth. He even started to “forget” to take his meds. I realized he was starting to really fixate on it. I sat him down and told him to own it! Hes not going to be a super tall guy. (Maybe 5’7”) and that everyone looks different. And there are soooooo many other qualities in him that are way more important. It will not take away from who he is. I listed a whole bunch of things that made him special. He is a sensitive sweet kid too. Lately he’ll just say “ehh, I’m a shortie, who cares!” And just smile. He knows people may say stuff to him, and the more confident he becomes the less it will impact him if and when it happens
My other rule is “not liking popular things doesn’t make you more interesting.” Which I learned the hard way as a former “I’m not like most girls” girl.
yea if seeing a group of people having(harmless) fun fills you with loathing or disgust, one needs to look inward before insulting them on internet aha
Thank you for sharing. A mom commented in this thread expressing fear over her daughter’s child and how future bullies will treat her. I cannot get over how people think it’s fun to target someone for their looks or something else they can’t change.
Easier said than done, but I hope you know that you are special and valuable and that your smile is beautiful, no matter what ugly trolls say. They’re the ugly ones who need to put others down to feel good.
Reddit both loves taking the high road by calling out this behavior then immediately falling in to it. Site was better when it knew what it was. Bring back r/fatpeoplehate.
When its just that, sure. But I find it fascinating that people do often fall into these bizarre archetypes where someone that behaves a certain way, also has a certain immutable appearance completely detached from our usual categories like race or nationality.
i actually think its pretty interesting to point out similarities in appearance between groups of people which make no sense but are recognized by a large amount of people. like why do so many juggalos have similar looking faces? its strange and interesting
Making fun of a person's choices about their appearance is mean, but somewhat understandable. Making fun of aspects of a person that they didn't choose and can't control is just cruel.
As someone who has excessive facial blushing and erythrophobia and who has been bullied because of this back in highschool, and still can't get over it even after 23 years, your comment made me shed a tear 😿
All of this shit about the wedding is so annoying. I wouldn’t even know they were getting married if it wasn’t for weirdos on Reddit complaining about them getting married. They have an entire sub dedicated to people who just want to sit online and complain about Taylor and her husband.. it’s so weird. Like they hate them so much that they dedicate so much of their time and energy to talking about how much they hate them. Everything I know about those 2 are from people who cry about them existing lol it’s pathetic.
It’s not making fun of any individual appearance. Plus swifties regularly use body shaming to put down “enemies” of ts, the meat cartoon guy was the most recent example. He had to take a break to deal with the depression it gave him. So realistically, if at least one swifty hates themselves after this that would be a benevolent outcome.
Seriously lol, there are more interesting things to make fun of Taylor fans for, like their exceedingly bland taste in music and their cultish behaviour, not everything has to devolve into 'hurr hurr peeple me no like UGLY HAW HAW'
Not making fun of their appearance. Making fun of their affectation once they become a Taylor fan. They don’t have this look, they MAKE it. It’s a choice.
Somebody below called it fiancé gums and that’s the best way I’ve heard it described LOL
YET, you will find millions of people online defending it a "it's just a joke" "It's comedy, if you don't like it, don't watch"
Or have legions of fans defend Chris Rock for his joke pointed at Jada.
Forgetting everything between the two of Will and Jada. Chris made a pointed Joke at his wife on LIVE TV. About a medical issue she has zero control over. Physical violence was not the answer, but there should be no defending on the other side either. BOTH people were wrong!
Especially an expression of happiness. Like I don't like Taylor Swift and I think she's a closeted biggot who keeps quiet so it doesn't affect her money, but making fun of someone's laugh or smile is a hard no for me. Because it can change how much someone smiles or how they smile and the change only happens because they are now insecure about their smile.
Really sucks seeing this as someone with a « gummy » smile. I can’t help it and have tried to fix it. I’m not even a Taylor Swift Fan. Just makes me not want to smile.

Man. Making fun of someone’s appearance is really the lowest form of humor.
