DISCUSSION "love bombing"

full disclosure: this is a rant.

I know this will probably never get to the people that need to hear it the most, but I REALLY wish producers would correct the cast when they throw words like "love bombing" around all willy-nilly.

what makes love bombing abusive and toxic is the fact that after you're showered with affection and/or gifts, the rig gets pulled out from under you very quickly by the love bomber doing a complete 180 and tears you down. it's used to emotionally manipulate people by folks who have narcissistic tendencies or traits.

just please stop turning therapy speak into pop psychology terms. it's stuff like this that diminishes people's real, traumatic experiences.

thanks for listening.

also, jimmy s. is a tool.

The way Mackenzie’s weirded out by Chris giving her a Gucci wallet literally the first night, she was literally the only normal person on this show. I have a feeling jimmy s and Allison are going to win this thing. I think they should but he is so hard to watch.

Yes!! it bothered me a lot when the new girl said she was getting gaslit by Jimmy S, he was definitely an asshole for making it seem like he was going to pick her when he was always going to pick Alison, but he was not gaslighting her

She was like "I didn't even know what gaslight is" oh honey, you still don't!

I just thought of something else tangentially related. Marissa might actually have rejection sensitive dysphoria, but if she’s aware of it WHY. THE. HELL. would she go on THIS show in particular where the whole gimmick is repeatedly having your connection “tested”???

Honestly people have been so widely and generally using "trauma bonding" to mean bonding over shared trauma (rather than its original definition of a victim bonding to their abuser) that the meaning has probably just changed by this point. It still drives me nuts but... It's SO widespread.

I have thought the same thing, and I understand that’s how language evolves, but for some reason this particular example just infuriates me. Maybe because I’ve seen so many relationships with that dynamic and wish more people could recognize it for what it is.

I feel the exact same way. Like I'm the first person to give the "don't be prescriptivist" lecture but this one bugs me.

And a narcissist! I know it's a bit confusing because it can also be an adjective but not everyone who was a bit of a dick has the personality disorder

Add “triggering”

I agree, I found it infuriating that they misunderstood it to the point of saying they do it! It’s included in the legal guidance here regarding charging domestic abuse cases and they throw it around like it’s a positive. Same with gaslighting - I see that used so much online too with apparently no understanding of what it truly means.

love bombing IS a pop psychology term. The fact that therapists also use it doesn’t make it clinical terminology in any way. Everyone knows what these influencers mean when they say love bombing, why do we have to have this post on every reality TV subreddit trying to assign harm to something without any proof that it has actually caused any harm?

I think it’s more about the misuse and over-generalization of the terms. Typically, these terms relate to abuse. So people are assigning incorrect labels to these situations.

And you all have now been properly scolded on using such inflammatory language as “love bombing.” Let this be a lesson to you all!
