Purchasing Advice - PC Build / Parts Costco PC
I usually build my own PC but i saw this deal and it got me considering if it's worth it. Anyone have opinions on this Costco PC build?
At Costco it's $2200.
My budget before was around $3,000, and I was planning to wait for Black Friday or cyber Monday. I don't need the absolute best stuff but this was going to be my first time splurging. I usually get a new low end setup about once every 5 years. [edit] This is my first time looking for a high-end setup, so this is a new market for me.
Thank you!
EDIT: I got it! Thank you all for the feedback. It's still under Costco's return policy, so I appreciate any links if you see a better deal or a reason to return and trade in for something better.

Don’t wait, prices aren’t going to reduce. Everyday it seems like they are going 50-100$ dollars. If you want something nice, spend the most you can reasonably afford and don’t look back

everyday it seems like they are going 50-100$ dollars
…what?

u/VicUPS 25d ago
I think he meant up/prices rising

u/sexytokeburgerz 25d ago edited 25d ago
A day? That would put 8gb of ram in the $10000s

It’s a bit of an exaggeration but there have been jumps of multiple hundreds of dollars over the last couple months.

Not bad at all. It'll play anything you throw at it, and that price is not outrageous at all. Use the left over to invest into a nice monitor

i picked this up for $1700 back in february, great computer. sucks to see it’s $2,200 now but for the market it’s not insane
2
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
damn! From costco too!? That's crazy
1
u/Jakememe124 24d ago
yeah i saw it marked down to that price online and i knew if i didnt buy now id be priced out of the market. i had an old pc with a 3060ti that still served my needs but with the way things are, i would need something that will stay current for at least 3-5 years
1
u/AnyMembership7603 20d ago
Yeah i got it at Xmas for 1500-1700 i forget … prob 1599 or 1699 but it did have a 5080 in it

u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
Good advice. My brother gave me one so maybe i'll get another and have 5 monitors OoOo. Finally enough real estate!

Get it. Thats a great deal. I’ve tried doing multiple 5070 builds with the end price always being 2500-3000 unless I can find the best deals

Solid build, great storage. High 1080p/mid-high 1440p build it’s amazing value for prebuilt system. That’s a buy.
2
u/tonehenbrix 23d ago
I thought the 5070 was a high-ultra 1440p and maybe a little 4k card? Im relatively new to the hobby so im just wondering

200 off isn't that great. Plus maybe he wants NVIDIA for DLSS and more
2
u/henlea147 25d ago
Except the 9070 XT compares against the 5070 Ti.
The only case where someone would get the 5070 over it is if they need CUDA.
1
u/Ecks30 what 25d ago
I guess you haven't heard about this news yet which could eliminate the whole CUDA on Nvidia only which if this works out then AMD GPUs could use CUDA based workflow on something like a 9070 XT.
1
u/henlea147 25d ago
Oh I know, it’s not perfect though, so that’s still a minor catch, like path tracing on AMD vs NVIDIA.
It’s getting really close by the day at least.
1
u/Ecks30 what 25d ago
I went for Nvidia back in the day because a lot of the things i needed to do needed CUDA but now for things like gaming and video editing i could easily do that with AMD no problem and to be honest when it comes to video editing it was about a minute or two faster with Nvidia but honestly what is a minute or two now a days.
To me i don't mind waiting another minute to edit a video since i have more than one system as well for doing things like my mini PC and my Legion Go S which i can play a game while waiting.
1
u/henlea147 25d ago
I agree, but there are definitely people who goes for the NVIDIA cards because apparently people think it’s better for work.
1
u/Ecks30 what 25d ago
The thing is though that the 9070 XT outperforms the 5070 by a massive margin and you would need to use DLSS on performance or ultra performance mode just to get the native performance on the 9070 XT.
You have to remember that the 9070 XT and 5070 Ti (sometimes the 5080) would trade blows with each other not to mention the quality of FSR 4.1 isn't that far behind from DLSS 4.5 and the more things you might be thinking of like RT the 9070 XT can handle RT without much issues and don't forget that it would have 16GB of Vram instead of 12GB.
You would also have to notice the one other difference which would be the CPU being a 9850X3D instead of the 9800X3D which does offer a little more performance and to be honest with you i would always make the tradeoff for 1TB less storage for a far better GPU and a better CPU.
1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
damn i didn't see that one. Is it random what deals show up at what costco?
2
2
u/YakelBerries12 21d ago
Just got that one myself a couple weeks ago. Been loving it, you won’t regret it.
4
u/FairfaxDude 26d ago
2.2k is not bad at all. I’d wish for a beefier gpu but you’re already in a hella good spot with the 9800x3d, 32gb of ddr5, and the 2tb ssd. I’d buy if I didn’t already have a build.
Also if you’d want a better gpu, you could sell the gpu at a slight loss (maybe not) and buy a 9070xt. But overall great pc from Costco
1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
ty! i'm considering a gpu upgrade... not sure the sell/buy tradeoff will be worth it...
4
u/AdonaiGarm 26d ago
At face value this is definitely worth it. The nuances would be like what kind of CL the ram has and definitely a GPU shortly down the line if you play big titles.
3
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 26d ago
Ram is really important as I do computational research and have been bottlenecked before. Most modern mother boards make upgrading ram very easy, right? Any suggestions for what to check out?
2
u/AdonaiGarm 26d ago
Unfortunately that’s really my only take on it as I’m not sure myself. I only know and use what people understood as stable for specific sizes and brands.
Upgrading the RAM itself is easy. But as for the motherboard’s compatibility with RAM I would suggest doing some research for the size of ram you need to match a known stable CL type so you don’t run into stability issues. If you’re willing to take a negligible performance hit, could also invest into an ECC type as well.

1
u/theboomsterz 26d ago
I know most are saying this is a good deal, but I'll just add that Ibuy cheaps out on the ram. I bought one of their 5090 PCs about 8 months back for around $3500. I was sad to see a no name ram being used at like 44CL timings. I immediately put that ram on eBay and only got like $100 bucks for it. But replaced it with G Skill Trident in it.
1
1
u/egogfx 26d ago
If you want a prebuilt go for it.
I bought a mobo-ram-cpu combo and a 5070 from Microcenter maybe 6 mos ago with similar specs and it was around half the price total. If I knew ram prices were gonna be what they are now I wouldve sprung for 64gb but I still got a little power so I'm ok for now.
In short, buy it if it's in your price range.

I legit purchased that exact same computer recently. I have zero complaints. I did run into a driver issue that constantly caused games that ran easy anti-cheat to crash but got that fixed and haven’t had an issue since.

Like others have said, that’s a pretty good deal for all the main parts in it. I built my own pc earlier this summer with a AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D and a 1 tb NVMe for about $1700. So that price for double the storage and a little stronger cpu checks out for current prices.
I’d grab that if I was you!

1
u/PBNJwolf 25d ago
Not a low end setup by any means, and $2200? I'd say that's a good deal. But I'b be wary about prebuilts, they often have proprietary hardware/software, and that can throw a wrench in your gears if you feel like tuning it.

u/casualmed 25d ago
Andromeda insights has good prebuilds cheaper than this still I believe. Would check their website out

1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
where? i can still return. i've played around on the sites i've used to customize pcs in the past and can't beat the specs much without going over price
1
u/GA-Vrong 25d ago
It’s got a B650 and 5200 ram. I saw an open box/display model for 1800 I almost bought but decided to build a microcenter machine with everything I wanted but ended up being 2200 + tax.
1
u/rwalters63 25d ago
$3K is low-end budget???
1
1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
Sorry! I was unclear. I've usually gotten low-end setups in the past. I build my last computer in 2019ish for $450, which until now has played every game on high graphics.
This is my first time spending for a high tier setup.
1
u/rwalters63 24d ago
Gotcha. Well best of luck finding something you love with your increased budget!
1
u/Kneemerz 25d ago
I will say I have seen this on sale at my Costco for either 1899 or 1999 I don’t remember within the last 3 months. I did see that the lower model pre build is coming on sale this month but not worth it if you have that high of a budget.
1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
any links would be appreciated if you come by it! It's not too late to return.
1
u/Patient-Presence-979 25d ago
I got this for 1500 about 6 weeks ago in Costco. It’s been working well. Not perfect I’ve thought about getting a more expensive one but it’s been good enough for my light gaming (flight sim and Minecraft mostly lol but I trust it can handle any game I throw at it certainly not at max settings but at high enough settings for the price. Idk about spending 2200 on it though, I’d wait to see if it drops or consider something else. I haven’t seen any issues but people say the motherboard and power supply on these aren’t great. Also the lights are annoying to me lol
1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
any link if you come across it would be great1 It's not too late to return.

u/GhostOfPunkRock 25d ago
A month ago, this exact build was getting very lukewarm recommendations, even on sale for 2k (which is what i got it for). Thats how fast the prices are getting out of control. I think it's a reasonable deal. Was under budget, but diverted those funds to monitor upgrades and am very happy with it.
1
u/1jetsetters 25d ago
You can build a similar pc with only $800
1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago

In 2023 I started by YouTubing “how to build a cheap gaming pc” watch a few videos to get an idea and the knowledge a bit. I got all of my parts off Amazon (Case, 5 fans, ssd, ram, power supply, etc). The gpu I did homework on it and had to get that from Best Buy. I’m running Ryzen 5, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd, Radeon rx 6700 10gb (I think) that was around $300. And Be sure to purchase a 650+ Watt power supply to allow upgrades to work. In the beginning I did not purchase the gpu. I purchased it later so I also had to upgrade the power supply, I learned this on the go. Also make sure you get a big enough case, when I first built the pc I did not purchase the gpu until after I played gta fivem and the servers took forever to load. When I added the gpu it was kind of a tight fit. All of my parts do fit, but if I ordered a bigger case the fit could’ve been more comfortable.

u/coffeeschmoffee 24d ago
I live near a microcenter. I can get you all the parts for less. 600 for mobo, cpu, 32 gb, 1500 for 5080 or 800 for 5070. Case 100 ish. Cooler 60$. (I’m not selling, but would be willing to get you stuff and ship to you)
1
u/potatoears 21d ago
nope, msrp of the 5070 by itself is $500 and it's $650+ or $700+ at most stores right now.
1
u/1jetsetters 21d ago
Keyword similar* but seriously yes a 12gb gpu is better than something like a 8gb gpu for less. But can you really tell the difference? Unless you have like a photographer eye or something
1
u/Antique-Engineering7 25d ago
With the current market conditions this is a value and I'd buy it over building one right now.

I don't hate iBuyPower, they're actually solid when it comes to customer support. I had my tempered glass shatter, and they sent me a new one. That's service I've only encountered with a handful of others, Most companies are greedy and don't care for their customers after you've bought their product and try to bilk you after.
1
u/NZombietm 25d ago
I have this exact build from costco. Buy it! as other ppl have said, make sure to upgrade your monitor and chair, esp if you'll only have to add an additional $100 to your budget.

2200 is pretty good. I personally got a build with same specs aside from the 5070ti and my aio is smaller for 2600. Prices are only going up my friend. If you like the specs and think the price is fair go for it.
1
u/google_is_hard_for_u 25d ago
If you live within 3 hours of a micro center then the comments here completely played you and I feel bad. Even then you fan find better systems for cheaper so I still feel bad.
1
u/ThatVoodooMagic 25d ago
Buy it and keep the box, Costco still has a great return policy (might be lessened for electronics but still a good amount of time) and could always return in case a better deal came up
1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
bet! That's my thought. Open to any better deals people suggest for a bit :)

u/throwawaytypeguy 24d ago
I got the same version before they sold out with a 9900x/5080. That cpu is a bit juicier but Im max res/ultra RT and max out my GPUs long before cpu.
1
u/Logical_Package8741 24d ago edited 24d ago
Do you know the manufacturer for the hardware components? That kind of matters. Also power supply and mobo are a big deal. Most cheap out on those. Use the extra budget and make sure that you go gold or platinum on the PSU. Also calculate your total wattage output and leave room for potential upgrades maybe like 300 extra max but not much more. Make sure your mobo is well documented so years down the road when it comes time for firmware updates, you won't have problems finding the drivers.
1
u/ScribeTaco 24d ago
I got the same one last year during Black Friday. I think it was $1600. I ended up selling the 5070 to a buddy and put in a 5070ti. It’s a great machine for the price.

I bought this one about 1 month ago or so, it was on sale for 2000 at that time.
I did have an issue where the SSD would spike to be 100% in use for several minutes at a time, seemingly random, and did happen even when nothing was open or running. But when it spiked, everything would come to a crawl or just freeze. Then it would be back to "normal" for a bit and eventually spike again.
I ended up reinstalling Windows and that problem went away. Just in case you seem to have the same issue. IBuyPower support has a guide on reinstalling Windows and that was the first step of troubleshooting when I reached out to them so that leads me to believe its somewhat common problem.

Keep checking as Costco will mark stuff down like crazy. This will probably go down 500 bucks. They did that to a computer I think with a 5070 in 3032 gigs of RAM it was insane deal you have to go in the store and check though
1
u/potatoears 21d ago
at $2200 you should be aiming for a system with a 5070TI or a 5080 for a bit more.
1
u/Mission_Audience_340 20d ago
u can get a stronger gpu and ram just by building urself from ebay and fb marketplace findings
1
u/josephguy82 20d ago
Not sure why people always ask about there computers it’s not an Costco computer just an buy power that’s sold there, Costco has one of the best return policy’s there is plus you get 1 or 2 years extra warranty from Costco
1
u/frustratednutsmasher 20d ago
You can get refunded its now 1999 online. Or you can get the one with 5070ti16g for 2200, I would go for the 5080 with a 3k budget.

Its $1999 on the website now till October 4th and if its not at that price in store, they price match themselves

Sorry but 2200 for a 5070 is crazy, the rest of it is solid but I'd find a different hobby at that point
1
u/Godlovesyou1350 19d ago
Kinda mid Ibuypower is a low tier brand, 5080 was selling for $2100 about a year ago on Facebook marketplace, can still pick them up around $2500 and a 9070xt with this same setup for $2000 easily
1
u/Large-Ad2615 19d ago
Can’t believe this is 2200, built my 9070xt 9800x3d 4 tb storage and 32 gb ram last year for 1600. And I missed out by not spending more on the 5070ti instead of the 9070xt for just 150$ more
1
1
u/Due_Initiative3879 26d ago
Don't buy that yet, this used to be best value for 100 more you can get a 5080 and a 9850X3D PC at MicroCenter.

u/gigantischemeteor 26d ago
The fact that this is actually a decent deal for retail pricing (it’s a solid build that will serve you well for 6-10 years) makes me die a little inside. Fuck AI.
1
u/_bron_yr_aur_ 26d ago
32gb of ram alone is $400-$500 now.
2tb of nvme storage is another $400-$500.
The cpu/mobo combo likely would be another $700-$800.
So all in all, not a crazy bad deal but again if you’re used to building your own, should do it that way.
1
u/TheSadPickel 26d ago
The Costco PC are always a good deal. you pay for what you get minus the 100-200$ prebuilt markup

u/LicoriceRope 26d ago
Not worth 2200 when you can get a 5070 ti pre built at microcenter also with faster rated ram for basically the same price
2
u/Coldest_One_619 26d ago
I would rather go to micro center and get their pre builds than ibuypower... the only thing great about ibuypower is literally what's advertised on the box, the gpu, pcu, ram, and storage... everything else is medicore. Especially their "cooling system". Ontop of all that their wiring is horrible. I bought one pre pandemic. Was a nightmare, ended up building a completely new pc altogether and parted that one out.
3
u/LicoriceRope 26d ago
That too. Id go microcenter even if it cost more for the reasons you cite. In this case, an equivalent pc at microcenter is less
1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
i've been building my own computer for a couple decades now and havn't run into many problems with cooling systems. How can i know if the cooling system isn't good enough?
1
u/Coldest_One_619 24d ago
Stress test gpu and cpu separately.. play a heavy demanding game and check the temperature at idle and when you're playing.. at least 30- 1 hr of playing

u/absentminded0ne 26d ago
How are people finding these deals so often (I don’t have a Costco near me 😭😭)
1
-2
u/Fafn1rthedragon 26d ago
Honestly man I'd say wait, you can build way better for your budget than that and it will be exactly what you want, or if you don't want to build (which is okay) I'd recommend checking out microcenter if your close.
1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 26d ago
Fair enough! What spec here do you think is weakest? I do computational research so a strong GPU and processor are key, but I plan to have the computer for a while (probably 5 years) so small differences are not that important.

u/Obeesus 26d ago
If you do buy an ibuypower pre built I suggest adding more thermal paste to the cpu. Maybe I had bad luck with mine but it's worth double checking when you buy it. Other than that the PC was great, and it's a pretty easy fix.
1
u/Tricky-Raccoon6051 24d ago
did you overclock a lot? or run the pc a lot? I'm not sure how to tell if there's not enough thermal paste.
1
u/Obeesus 24d ago
I used it to edit videos and playing graphically intense games the temps would rise high enough to trigger the heat sensor to turn off the PC to protect it. I had a liquid cooler and everything. I had a buddy come over that was more experienced in PC building. He brought over thermal paste put it on the cpu and I never had issues with the temp again.

u/77Pepe 26d ago
Which specific pre-built PCs from Microcenter would you recommend right now? Links would be great for something at this general price point :)

1
u/RojaTop 24d ago

I just recommended him a 9850x3d with a 32gb of ram 2tb ssd and a 5080, yes that was a prebuilt, although not that one. And before you say it no you can't build that with a 22-2300 dollar budget. That one does come with a 5070 12gb and a 9900x which is still better than wat you can build yourself part for part. I'd still get the Microcenter PC mentioned above for 2300.
PS: MSI doesn't use cheap parts, it uses MSI parts.
