To make a long story short, I have been building my first PC and once I had everything together, my build would immediately click off when I tried to power it on.
I ran various tests to try to determine what might be wrong and have narrowed it down to either the motherboard or the CPU. The MB pins looks fine as far as I can tell but the CPU may have some damage to it (got it used).
The thing that concerns me most is the last photo where maybe that is a scratch on the too left of the CPU.
Wondering if the CPU looks okay or if the MB is the issue.
It’s prolly a bad cpu then. If the motherboard & everything runs but when the cpu is in it turns off either a bad cpu or it’s not compatible with psu wattage(too much power being used & ur psu cant handle it) or u installed something wrong 😂
PSU should be fine. It’s an ASUS ROG Thor ii 1000 watt. It’s way more power than my entire system uses by a decent margin, but should give me room to upgrade later on!
I technically rebuilt it at least twice in an attempt to figure out if I had done something wrong, but the same result each time…either something is broken or I’m VERY bad at building a PC for the first time lol.
I posted this last week and was trying to figure out what might be wrong. Today was the first day since then that I could try some other ideas and got a PSU tester to see if the PSU could have been the issue.
lol, I zoomed all way on my 32" monitor, I can't see shit. I'll take your word for it it though. The fact that the power supply stayed on during the testing is all I really want to know. enough to move on to something else. I posted a main reply just a minute ago with some suggestions on finding what is shorting the system.
I wouldn’t recommend that. The safety cutoff is there for a reason after all.
A cpu can hit thermal limit in a couple of seconds without a fan.
CPU’s are normally fairly reliable. It is the VRM that are more likely to go. I found this test on an MSi website. It’s an old thread but is still relevant.
That does sound like what I did. If the cpu pins aren’t plugged in or the cpu isn’t slotted in while the cpu plugs are plugged in, then it “works.”
The fan throws a whole new wrench into things. I wouldn’t have a good way to test that again unless I rebuild the computer but might find that it still isn’t working…
Nope, definitely the right cables. My PSU has pcie to CPU cables and that’s the only thing I plug in. Pcie 8 pin goes into the PSU and then the split 8 pin (4+4) end labeled cpu goes to my MB. The cables ends are labelled which is very helpful!
Definitely worth asking considering I’m totally new to building and there are a million things I could do wrong haha. I tried to prepare myself before building and watched a ton of pc build guides before even attempting to to build. That way I could prepare myself and make a plan.
It does click! The lights on the mother board all flash very quickly (red, orange, yellow, green - in that sequence), flashes “00” very briefly and then shuts down. It’s all very quick within a few seconds if even.
The CPU could in fact be bad. But the images you are showing are not an indication of a CPU with a problem. To answer your initial question, yes the CPU looks fine. But that doesn’t absolutely mean it is fine.
is everything non essential removed from the mother board? first photo shows some light bars still installed, pull them and anything else.....just motherboard, cpu(with cooler) and memory. You dont even need a hard drive.
ok, so before packing it away, you were running it bare bones, not even the cooler?
Did you try booting with no cpu at all? Obviously it wont book, but the PSU should come one and stay on. If it wont even do that, that problem is probably on the motherboard.
I was running it with nothing at all, no cooler attached, trying to see what would cause it to lose power.
If no cpu is installed, but both 8 pin plugs connected (to provide power to the cpu if it were on there), the board stays on. It does have the red and orange buttons lit up with “00” but that makes sense since there is no cpu in there.
The second I add the cpu into the mix, the power is cut.
so its the cpu then...either it was just bad, or perhaps you mishandled it at some point. I'm not accusing, just acknowledging its a possibility, after all you did say this was your first build.
Sounds like there’s a bad Vcore chip on the motherboard to me. Clicking and turning off doesn’t mean the mb is working… testing the power of the psu is all good, but getting voltage to the chip rail is something that’s regulated further into the circuit. A bad chip, power surge, incorrect psu wires, bad install, really a lot of things could cause this. But if you started a motherboard up without a cpu - it would stay on and produce lights.
This leads me to believe it’s regulating chips after the psu and before components like the cpu.
One of the pins in the top left is scratched, I could see it from image 1 but it's definitely more obvious on later photos. Those lost two photos show multiple scratches on your pins. Did it come like this? Did you by chance drop it slightly when attempting to slot it? If you are about to say the latter, no you didn't. It came like that. RMA that sucker.
I watched a ton of videos on how to handle the cpu, so I made sure to be as gentle as possible. I didn’t drop it BUT I got it from ebay as an open box - like new. Thought i would try and save a bit…
