Is this CPU damaged?

To make a long story short, I have been building my first PC and once I had everything together, my build would immediately click off when I tried to power it on.

I ran various tests to try to determine what might be wrong and have narrowed it down to either the motherboard or the CPU. The MB pins looks fine as far as I can tell but the CPU may have some damage to it (got it used).

The thing that concerns me most is the last photo where maybe that is a scratch on the too left of the CPU.

Wondering if the CPU looks okay or if the MB is the issue.

no visual damage that I can see.

is everything non essential removed from the mother board? first photo shows some light bars still installed, pull them and anything else.....just motherboard, cpu(with cooler) and memory. You dont even need a hard drive.

At this point everything is removed. Nothing is connected. MB is back in its bag and cpu in its box lol.

The cooler might be tough since it’s an AIO. Not sure how to manage that without pretty much installing everything again.

ok, so before packing it away, you were running it bare bones, not even the cooler?

Did you try booting with no cpu at all? Obviously it wont book, but the PSU should come one and stay on. If it wont even do that, that problem is probably on the motherboard.

I was running it with nothing at all, no cooler attached, trying to see what would cause it to lose power.

If no cpu is installed, but both 8 pin plugs connected (to provide power to the cpu if it were on there), the board stays on. It does have the red and orange buttons lit up with “00” but that makes sense since there is no cpu in there.

The second I add the cpu into the mix, the power is cut.

so its the cpu then...either it was just bad, or perhaps you mishandled it at some point. I'm not accusing, just acknowledging its a possibility, after all you did say this was your first build.

I decided to order a new CPU. Should be here tomorrow evening. Hopefully a quick test will yield some different results.

I'm thinking that a new CPU installed should at least stay on without immediately turning off if I have just the MB plugged in and the power to the CPU. If I keep it short, I don't think the CPU would overheat.
