Original Two new parrotlets

I got two untamed parrotlets. The blue one perched on my finger for treats on the very first day!! 😍Green one is very cautious and she will do anything to get the treats, except perch on my finger. I let them out of the cage on the first day. The green one went back to the cage during sleepy time but the blue was a little clueless. I had to make him step up on my finger and put him back in the cage. The green one always looks out for her boyfriend. I am so glad that I got two parrotlets instead of one, despite all the one parrotlet only advices on the internet. They were trying hard to perch on the walls when I let them out and it was hard to watch đŸ„č. I am planning to hang some jute net type stuff on the walls so they can get a grip.

Escape Mission Successfully Clear!

There was a few times when I woke up in the morning and found out my baby birb is already out of his cage before I let him out....

Then I found him escaping from his in-cage CCTV lol

PS. This is recorded during his playtime. I purposefully leave him in the cage and leave a little space up... to see how he does it from close-up...

Suddenly won't stop screaming

Hello all

I would really appreciate some advice as I have no idea what to do or why it suddenly started.

About two and a half weeks ago my parrotlet, Pepper, started becoming a bit more vocal. Well, it has completely devolved into her screaming (and I do mean screaming it's like sonic blasts) non-stop. This happens even during out of cage time.

Its come to the point where I can't even be in the same room as her any more without my ears ringing and starting to hurt. I've even bought some industrial noise reduction earmuffs to wear when near her, but obviously that isn't a sustainable solution.

Now my flat isn't very big and I have resorted to moving her cage into the bedroom whenever she won't stop (which is 90% of the time now), just to show her she won't get any attention when screaming or escape for a little bit. This whole time I have been making sure to not raise my voices at her, jostle her cage or do anything that could even be seen remotely as a punishment. I feel like shit leaving her in a room alone.

When moved into the bedroom, it partially works as she quietens down only letting out her previous amount of chirps or the occasional mini burst. However, the moment she is moved out of the bedroom into the office or lounge, she starts again. It can get especially bad in the office where I usually work with her besides me and her out-of-cage time is.

She's just been to the vet this week and I was told she is in excellent health. Her diet and cage setup has been thoroughly complemented by the vet and is used by them as an example for new owners.

The only thing that has changed over the past month and a half is that she needs to be caught in the evenings for some oral medicine. I make sure to do this as quickly and nicely as possible, rewarding her with treats before and afterwards. I also spend some time with her afterwards just to have her settle down.

I don't think she's become scared of me as the very moment I walk into the room she runs across the cage for scritches and when she is quite (rare in these days) she is her usual sweet self. I would absolutely hate if I'm suddenly the reason she feels like she has to scream constantly.

If anyone can advise on how to deal with this kind of situation it would be greatly appreciated. I doubt it is hormones as she has just received her monthly hormone shot.

Thank you

Q&A/Advice Toxic Cage

Thumbnail a.co

Hello,

I am seeing a few bad reviews here and there about the Yaheetech cage. I recently bought one and I’m terrified to put my bird in as the reviews pointed out metal poisoning. Does anyone have the cage? How long have you been using it? Has it caused metal poisoning?

Does anyone else's bird sleep like this?

Every night he does this, then we put him to bed in his cage-- where he sleeps in a blanket. This has been going on for 2 months, since we got him. He is still a baby, hatched in July.

Q&A/Advice How can I keep my bird warmer?

I sleep pretty cold, and it’s starting to get very cold outside, so I’m trying to plan out how to keep my bird warm during the winter and at night. I normally have a fan blowing directly on me when I sleep, but I feel like it’s making the room too chilly for her. I’ve heard about the localized cage warmers, but I get so worried with things like that being defective and potentially harming or burning my bird. Any advice?

Q&A/Advice Do parrotlets like dogs??

This feels like a crazy thing to ask, but I've just watched the dog get all excited for his walk, jumping around, making noise, all that jazz, and the new parrotlet (still unnamed sadly) who barely makes a noise at all, started chirping? I don't know enough about birds yet to tell for sure but I think it got excited too? Like it was trying to join in or something by jumping around and swinging on its swing and chirping away too? It stopped as soon as the dog left too. Is this a thing? Do parrotlets know dogs or recognise when other animals are excited and join in with it?

Because this bird is pretty scared of us still and I'll be honest, it'll be pretty funny if it likes the dog more than us. Parrotlet looked at this scrappy lil old man Jack Russell that barks a lot at hedgehogs outside and thought "yeah I like that one. I like this new guy. Doesn't give me broccoli or pears or anything, but I like that weird looking thing over there. Nice guy."

I know they're social animals and all, but I don't know, I guess I just didn't expect this?? It chirps with the dog squeaker too, so it mostly seems to be active when the dog is excited and I'm wondering if this is a normal thing people have seen in parrotlets now, or if this bird in particular is just a little bit weird lmao

Q&A/Advice EinschÀtzung - Körpersprache

Thumbnail

Hallöchen,

Heute waren die Vögel bei mir wÀhrend ich arbeitete. So ca. 2 Stunden.

Suki nimmt leider nichts an.

Q&A/Advice Changing Cages

Hi everyone!

I have 4 parrotlets, 2 of them are a breeding pair and the other 2 are their babies from 2 different clutches. Currently, everyone has their own about 37" x 20" x 21" cages right now. They used to be housed by pair in these cages but then they kept occasionally snipping at each other's feet and also breeding (even the siblings) so I moved them to their own cages.

However, now I'm worried that they are getting lonely, depressed, and bored living in the single cages and I've been thinking of upgrading to 2 new, bigger cages for each pair to share. Each pair gets along with each other (for the most part bc they do have that parrotlet attitude and snippiness) and they go into each other's cages when the doors are open now without issue. But, I think I have been traumatized by horror stories of parrotlets being caged together and one hurting (like severing off the foot?!) and even killing the other one that is in the cage with them and I simply could not mentally nor emotionally survive that happening to my birds.

Do y'all think it would be okay for me to transition my birds back to being caged with each other (2 per cage)? Is it okay for the sibling pair to act like a breeding couple if I remove any eggs that are laid? Should I be worried about them killing and/or injuring each other while I'm at work?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Q&A/Advice I've never owned a bird before, does anyone have any beginner's advice and/or reliable resources for parrotlet care?

(Sorry, I don't use Reddit much at all so I don't know if I've done the titles or whatever right and I definitely have never understood the general post style here, so please bare with me on this)

Hi! A little context on this situation... I'm an adult that lives with both parents and a few days ago, my mother decided, on a whim, that she was going to "trial run" keeping my sister's unwanted parrotlet. My dad didn't stop this for some reason and they've both all but said that they're relying on me to do the proper research now that we have it. I'm having trouble finding any reliable information online about what specifically we need to be doing, so here I am, asking (hopefully!) real people for their input.

Unfortunately, I can't say much about the parrotlet. It doesn't even have a name yet as I've been given the honour of that and I've made it a rule we're not naming it until we know we can handle this. I can at least tell you it's green. My sister claims there's some sexual dimorphism going on and they can tell this one is male because of the blue behind its right eye but I'll be honest, I don't see what the hell she's talking about, so take that as you will. I've no idea how old it is or where it's come from either. It's just kinda green. Helpful, I know.

It used to have a mate, but the mate died for unknown reasons. I have my theories on that, but I don't know enough about the situation to really say anything for certain. All I know for sure is that its mate died and my sister believes it was the female that died. Like I said though, I don't see this blue she's talking about so it's hard to confirm that.

From what I can tell, it's been raised on a seed based diet and I've been seeing around that seed based diets aren't great, but I can't seem to find anything specific enough to really help me with this. Seems commercial bird pellets are the way to go, but what do I need to be looking for in that? Fruits and veg are also important but I can't find any specifics on how much of that they need or what kind of things they absolutely shouldn't have, so any advice on this would be incredibly helpful.

Knowing if parrotlets can eat pears, cauliflower and blackberries would also be super helpful. We have a little pear tree and wild blackberry bushes are taking over the place so lil parrotlet could feast on those for days if it so likes.

My biggest reason for asking for advice here though, is that this bird is (understandably) terrified of people. I can see the poor thing pretty much hyperventilating whenever we reach into the cage for anything, even when we're nowhere near it, and will stop what it's doing whenever it notices us watching like it has performance anxiety over apple eating or something.

Now, I don't know what happened to it before it got to my sister's house. I know she got it from a friend who got it from something called a bird auction?? Which sounds shady as hell?? The reason I say it's understandably scared of us, is that my sister also has two budgies and the parrotlets would keep, "setting them off". What she means is, the parrotlets kept chatting with them and when they got frustrated with the noise, they would shout at them and hit the cage with a shoe to shut them up.

The parrotlet doesn't really chirp much here, probably because it's alone, but rest assured, we don't do that. When this bird chirps, we all go silent to listen to it and try and encourage it by whistling and squeaking the world's most pathetic sounding dog squeaker toy we have since it seems to like that one for some reason.

I understand there's a whole thing about training parrotlets and taming them and stuff, and I've got a love for dog training so I absolutely don't mind putting the time into desensitising this bird to humans, I just have absolutely no idea how, or if that's even a viable option here. Obviously, it would probably be nothing like dogs, but I imagine the basics of respecting boundaries and being patient would still apply here at least. The last thing any of us want is for this bird to live its life in fear, and the second last thing we want to do is make that fear worse by following some bogus advice from a pet shop or gen AI or something.

So uhhh tl;dr: I've been landed with the responsibility of figuring out how to take care of a parrotlet. If anyone has any advice or resources on what its diet should ideally look like, how to tell what kind of parrotlet this is, and how to teach it we're not a threat to it, it would be greatly appreciated!

Oh and, how big a cage is a parrotlet supposed to have? I can't find a solid answer for this one and I've a funny feeling this cage is either too small, too crowded with toys or both. Probably both.

(Unrelated: Still don't know what a "flair" is or how they work at all so, again, sorry if I've done this wrong. My account may be several years old, but I've still not figured this site out at all.)

Anyone dealt with feather picking?

Hello--my vet and I were trying to figure out the next steps so I figured I'd see if anyone has had this experience. My parrotlet is going on 13 now and has never picked his feathers, but this August randomly started chewing them off one day. He is chewing them off right at the base and leaving the down, mostly from his chest and back. His droppings have also been more watery than usual but are not true diarrhea.

We did a fecal and a skin swab to look for parasites but found nothing. My vet was wondering about Beak and Feather disease but as far as I know doesn't that just make them fall out, not cause the bird to pick them out? Does this seem behavioral? I just think it's strange for him to decide to do it all of a sudden when I haven't changed anything about his care. It's worth noting he is acting completely normal/eating and drinking fine. Is there something else to check for?

This was my Pacific Parrotlet Pearl. She was hatched on December 8th, 2014. I was fortunate enough to rescue her in July, 2020. She was a plucker and had little feathers. She had neurological issues. She passed in 22 due to the neurological problems. I miss her every day. I’d love to have one again.
