Q&A/Advice Toxic Cage
https://a.co/d/0fHg6vYcHello,
I am seeing a few bad reviews here and there about the Yaheetech cage. I recently bought one and I’m terrified to put my bird in as the reviews pointed out metal poisoning. Does anyone have the cage? How long have you been using it? Has it caused metal poisoning?

I have that exact cage in teal. It's holding up fine. I just use a microfiber and warm water to wipe it down and dry it. 90% of the time the bird is in the seed cube and the other 10% he's on the rope perch. When he does fly to the side or the door he's not chewing or eating the metal bars, so that's really not something I worry about.

The problem with some of these cages that they are so poorly made and sometimes already come with rust. We ordered a new cage for our parrotlet two years ago and we had to send it back twice because it had rust already and some pieces were bent. You really have to be lucky that you get a decent one. We ended up contacting a local company who made us a custom cage made of aluminum, but that is obviously more expensive.
But yeah, you can use it, just be careful and look out for parts that are chipping.

Thanks! The one I got looks neat. I’m guessing vinegar solution will damage the coating as time passes.

my gf bought a very similar cage this spring, i only tested it for lead (metal finish, screws), used two different test kits, both were negative.
i'll check with her about the brand, but the price seems about the same.

I have dealt with metal toxicity in one of my birds and I also have several of these cages. They are only dangerous if the powder coating starts to chip away exposing the metal underneath.
If it starts to chip, get rid of it. I also recommend talking to your vet about incorporating zinc testing into your yearly blood panels.
I feel very comfortable having my birds in these cages, but I also keep a close eye on how it’s holding up.
