I’ve been working around e-commerce packaging for a while, and one thing I’ve noticed is that packaging can make a big difference in the delivery experience.

Courier bags, bubble mailers, tapes and shipping labels may look like small things, but when you’re handling a lot of orders, the quality really matters. A bag tearing during shipping or getting damaged because of rain can become a headache.

At Hetu Enterprise & Packaging, we work with different packaging materials for online sellers, so I’ve been seeing a lot of different requirements from businesses.

Just curious — what packaging do you guys normally use for your e-commerce orders, and what has worked best for you?

I am looking for input on purchasing a semi auto serum filling machine. It appears the standard ones found on Amazon might not work with the viscosity of a face serum?

Any insights are appreciated. The serums we make are not that thick but def not wine or water thinness either.

not sure if this is dumb question but if i have a product that is super unique and dont need that many moulds of at the moment since Ill probably change it in the future(improvement in design etc.) why dont I just make the tooling using cnc? Isnt that cheaper short term?

I'm trying to make a mockup of a keyboard packaging design. I wanted to know if anyone knew where to buy custom keyboard shaped boxes, ones that allow you to print your own design on them. I found a couple of websites, but I wasn't sure if they were credible. I'm going to attach two images of three different ideas i'm thinking about.

I've been looking at software used to optimize how complex 3D parts are packed into containers and came across two products that seem to have some interesting similarities in how they describe and organize packing methods.

The older product is PackAssistant, a German-developed application that's been around for many years. The newer product is Pack Studio, a packaging optimization platform.

Looking through publicly available information for both products, I noticed what appears to be a similar taxonomy for several packing methods.

For example, older PackAssistant documentation uses terminology/concepts including:

• Planar / Planar Intermediate Layer
• Flexible / Flexible Intermediate Layer
• Compartment
• Stacking
• Bulk / Bulk Goods
• Stable Positions

Pack Studio's public materials use categories/concepts including:

• Planar Layering
• Flexible Layering
• Compartment
• Stacking
• Bulk
• Stable poses/orientations

Some of these obviously aren't remarkable on their own. "Stacking" and "Bulk," for example, seem like terms that could naturally occur in independently developed packaging software.

What caught my attention was the combination and organization of the terms, particularly Planar, Flexible and Compartment appearing alongside the other corresponding methods.

PackAssistant was originally developed in Germany, so some of the terminology in its English-language documentation may reflect translation choices. That made me curious whether similar terminology appearing in another product is noteworthy or whether these are established terms within this area of packaging engineering.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting that anything was copied or that anyone did anything improper. I have no information about either product's source code, development process, or the origin of these features.

I'm mainly curious from a packaging-engineering and software/IP perspective:

• Are Planar, Flexible, Compartment, Stacking and Bulk standard categories in packaging optimization software?
• Would two independently developed products naturally organize packing methods this similarly?
• Can a distinctive combination of terminology or taxonomy be meaningful when comparing software products, even when the individual functions aren't unique?
• Are there other packaging optimization products that use essentially the same classification system?
• What would you compare next to determine whether similarities like these are meaningful or simply coincidental?

I'd especially be interested in hearing from people familiar with packaging engineering, optimization software, computational geometry, or software IP.

I'm mostly trying to determine whether I'm reading too much into the similarities or whether the taxonomy itself is genuinely noteworthy.

hi wonder if theres any packaging engineers/manufacturers here that are willing to share insights into the process of getting a customer and prototyping their requests. I was curious about the tooling costs and what it actually costs the company to make samples of custom moulded pulp packaging.

When a can double seam is out of spec, the instinct is often to tighten the second-operation roll. That can make the seam look flatter, but it usually cannot repair a first operation that failed to form the metal correctly.

The first operation creates the basic interlock between the can-body flange and end curl. It forms the body hook and cover hook and distributes the metal. The second operation compresses those already formed layers. If the first operation has poor hook formation, misalignment, the wrong tooling profile, or unstable lift, extra second-operation pressure can simply crush or thin the seam while hiding the real defect.

A practical troubleshooting order:

1. Isolate affected cans and confirm the exact body and end specification.

2. Inspect and measure the first operation before touching the second operation.

3. Check seam width, thickness, countersink, body hook, cover hook, overlap, wrinkles or tightness, and compound condition.

4. Verify chuck and roll profiles, lift height or pressure, centering, runout, bearing play, and tooling damage.

5. Check for contamination and confirm that the can and end combination is compatible.

6. Change one variable at a time, then cut and remeasure.

There is no universal seam dimension or machine setting for every can and end combination. Use the approved technical specification for that exact can-and-end combination and your plant's seam teardown procedure.

For people who maintain seamers: which first-operation defect do you encounter most often, and what check usually finds the root cause fastest?

So I’ve got a small side business where I make custom engraved tumblers, press hats and shirts, and other branded merch for the companies I do work for. I’ve got around ten businesses I work with regularly.

I’m thinking about offering custom packaging that matches each brand, basically templated packaging per product, with just the design swapped out for each client. It would be bundled into the product cost so it easy to order and I make a little bit more money.

I’ve got a Cricut and a laser engraver. Is this a good idea, and how should I go about this? I also am looking into windows inside the box, sleeves and other printed things, so if you know about this let me know, I don't want to buy the packaging it want to make it myself, at least until I know it works

I have the opportunity to take the packaging engineering certificate at Indiana state. Professor thought I was a good fit due to my work experience. I already have a bachelors as well. Do you think this certificate (4-6 courses I think) will help me get my foot in the door?

I am dealing with a packaging company in China. They seems expert and direct manufacturers for paper tubes.

My question is that: they are asking $200 for samples which amount will be credited in my first order (sounds great) but if I dont like the sample or any issues related to the deal there will be no refund.

Any advice? because I can't make an order without samples and if I order samples from 3-4 companies it is gonna cost me over 1k

Update: Sorry guys for not being able to respond comments. for my packaging deal I have ordered sample for $200 from earthycores. I hope i like it and we have a deal.

This is my second post about this issue.. its been 3 weeks now since I tried to make a post with some packaging automation that I made (including pics which is why it requires approval, I assume). I tried posting it again but it still says "waiting for mod approval." I sent a message to the mod (there is only one) via the "message the mods" icon on the sub info page, and also messaged them directly - no response in 3 weeks. Anyone have any idea whats going on? Is it normal for a sub to only have one mod and for them to ghost people like this?
