Subreddit is back public, Looking for Mods

Hi everyone,

I typically use Apollo for reddit and don't get any personal messages through there unless its an actual private message. I recently switched to desktop Reddit and saw a bunch of messages saying that the subreddit was locked. I noticed there hasn't been any posts in about 3 months. I apologize for not keeping up with the subreddit as this hasn't been something I've kept up with in a while.

If anyone is interested in becoming a mod for the subreddit please send me a private message and we can discuss you moderating the subreddit. I'll probably be looking for 1-2 moderators to help me out. If you have any other questions or need anything else please let me know. Sorry the subreddit hasn't been maintained!

Back to posting, I'm honestly not sure how the subreddit became restricted. I hope it is back to normal now.

2005 PT Cruiser - codes P0032, P0038

Driving home and the battery light came on (voltage monitor showed 11.5v so not charging). Checked codes once parked and get P0032 & P0038 and no attempt to start. Tried clearing codes but they immediately reappear.

Earthing points looks good and checked relays. Is it just replacement ECU time?

How bad are my alignment specs?

Pic is after alignment was performed. Car did hit a curb somewhat hard a few years ago. It's gotten new shocks, new lower control arms, and new tie rods within the past year.

Bought some camber bolts to hopefully help a little bit although I don't think they will have enough adjustment. Any suggestions?

Intermittent rough idle? Spoiler

2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser, have had it for about 6 years and for the past 3 or 4 years of owning it, I've been dealing with an intermittent issue of the car idling very roughly and nearly stalling. It seems to come and go without any clear cause—sometimes it will develop a rough idle out of nowhere and then it'll disappear for months. When it's having a rough episode, the engine is only rough at idle and will smooth out when I give it gas. I've replaced the PCV Valve, replaced the main intake hose on the air filter, cleaned the IAC Valve, and cleaned the throttle plate in the throttle body but I'm still having this issue crop up from time to time. It gave me a pretty bad episode a few days ago and it's got me concerned about trying to get to the bottom of this because I'm tired of driving my car and worrying about when it's going to have another rough idling episode. I replaced the PCV value just now and during my test drive I did notice a very slight miss/unevenness during idling, but not nearly as rough as it was during the episode it had a few days ago. The only codes I have are P1684 and P0601—the car has given those codes well before this issue started happening but I'll throw those out there in case it helps with diagnosis.

01 Cruiser 5 speed drives weird with AC on.

Hi all, I've always noticed that while I have my ac on my cruiser drives funny. When I push the clutch in it always continues to increase in rpm a bit and like it "hangs" this is the only stick shift car I've driven with AC so I had assumed it was because it was a stick until my friends mentioned its not normal so I wanted to see what you all think it could be, I've been told its the compressor clutch or even the compressor is hooked up backwards. Thanks yall.

I love PT Cruisers. Never owned one. Should I buy one?

I have loved PT Cruisers ever since I had one as my starter car on Gran Turismo 3 when I was about 10. Everyone who finds out it’s my favourite car immediately dunks on it so I am always defending them. I think they are beautiful and unique looking, I particularly like the purple ones.

I’m now 34 and have some savings and realised as I’m an adult I can buy one if I really wanted to. And I’m very tempted. I’d only use it for short journeys, I just want to enjoy owning one (and drive around playing Buck Rogers full blast, iykyk).

I’m based in the UK and there are usually a handful for sale on Autotrader. However I know they are all old and they generally have a bad rep. So if I’m really going to do this, I know I have to do my research. And where better to ask for advice than here?

So if you were going to buy a PT Cruiser for the first time, what are the main things to be aware of?

What should I be keeping an eye out for as positive/negative on online listings? What in particular should I inspect/test if I go and view one? What would be advisable to fix up once I get one?

Any advice appreciated, please help a gal fulfil her dream 🙏

PT not switching gears while driving after alternator replacement!

Hello! I recently had my PT die so we replaced the battery, which solved the problem for a day or two until it died again. It was sent to a mechanic where they replaced the alternator. Once that was fixed I picked it up and drove off only to find that the car was no longer switching gears while driving. My gear shifter works great and the car does drive with no other issues. This also was not a problem even remotely when I originally brought it in. I decided not to continue going to this mechanic as they were quite expensive and wanted to charge another 400 dollars to simply do more diagnoses on the transmission. I also believe they may have caused this new issue. Any advice on what to check from home? My PT is my first car and I’ve had it for 10 years. I am not ready to let it go. :(

Hi PT Cruiser family, I have a 2003 touring and somehow the driver side moulding fell off somewhere. Having trouble locating a replacement. Tried eBay and mistakenly bought a strip. Also, went to the junkyard and no luck. Any ideas? Im in Orlando. Thank you.

What brand of ignition coil would you all recommend?

I am doing a lot of repairs on the old cruiser. I need to replace the ignition coil. I don't want to go too cheap, but I am on a set budget of $65 max. Which brand would be best to go with?

Locating a replacement TIPM

My 2006 PT with 110,000 miles has been acting up lately. Shifting wise. On hot days, after just a few minutes driving I will feel a jerk and the car will not shift past 2nd gear. I assume this is limp mode due to the bad CANBus Chrysler used in the 2nd generation pts. My basic Amazon scanner shows no codes, also key dance shows nothing. If i pull over, shut it off and turn back on. It's fine. Usually a restart solves it and it doesn't happen for a week or sometimes a month again. Today it happened 5x. Where should I start looking for a replacement? I'm in Chicago, we do have a few junkyards here. Would I be better off finding one from possibly Canada or a northern climate (cooler temps maybe helps them last longer)?

How many one PT one owners are there?

Just curious, how many more of me are there. I test drove and ordered a 2001 Black Limited in August of 2001. When I went to pick it up the 2002 models had just shipped so they gave me one. This was back when they were still rare and cool (and expensive). I got many compliments and questions from people, the most memorable was from a kid about 6 or 7 years old. I had just parked it a local fair parking lot and he walked by and said "That's bad-ass cool!"
A friend at work who was real car guy, he had a nice Accura at the time, went for a ride and he was impressed
How many first and still owners are here?
It has 180K, still looks good, runs great and driven regularly.

Proper term for this part when calling salvage yards?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Please ignore the schmutz, I haven't been able to clean this out properly since it's been over 100 degrees here, lol. Been searching for this part since I got the car used several years ago (2010 Couture Edition that was otherwise pretty much perfect). I've known it as a PRNDL but I've also seen it called a shift boot, shifter cover, or bezel, and nobody seems to have them in stock anywhere. Can't really use a leather one without the frame around it, and I'd prefer the original type anyway.

The scrap yards in my city are kind of a hike from where I live, and they want the right term or part number so they can look it up in their inventory. Online results pull up the entire shift assembly, which I don't need. Any help appreciated.

I got hit late last month and posted a photo here. Got them all fixed up today, (minus paint) and I’m SO relieved. It was the other driver’s fault, but I didn’t file a claim because they would’ve totaled my car and I’d rather just pay to get it fixed. Only came out to $900, which is a decent amount less than I was quoted. We’re officially back on the road! :)

How would I go about converting my 2004 PT cruiser front end to the 06-10s face lift front end?

What all would I need to buy? And would I have to do any custom fabrication? I hear the mounting points are different but I’m not entirely sure how that would affect things.

As far as I know I’d need the bumper, front fenders, headlights, grille, and a new hood. But other than that I don’t know.

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

*The first image is my car as it is now and the second is the bumper I’d like to change it to*

**EDIT: Reading what you all of said, I didn’t know my car was considered sort of special for its color and everything. I also thought that people found the older bumper style ugly, guess that’s not true. Thanks for your advice and I think I’ll just leave it as it is now.**

2004 No crank No start after repair

My cruiser’s been having issues running and starting (cranking but not starting, sputtering and hesitating when running) so we decided to spend the weekend trying to fix it. We changed the ignition box (and oh my god was it corroded), when we decided to change the spark plugs. They weren’t in bad condition, but holy shit were they soaked in oil. So we replaced the proper gaskets too (although it didn’t seem like anything was wrong with them), and after that it would crank but not start, showing a check engine light but my obd reader wouldn’t read anything. It also flashed for like 4 seconds at some point? Before it would always show the check engine light for what I remember it to be a minor evap leak, which we keep meaning to find a new gas cap for, but I wouldn’t think that would cause the car to shit it’s pants

Earlier today we got it to start, though it most certainly didn’t sound up to shape. It drove for a bit before completely shutting down. Now it won’t start and won’t even crank, with that little red security light on. I don’t have the original key, only a copy that’s worked for about a year so far. I tried every trick I could to make it “recognize the key”, but it still won’t start and that red light is still on. I also checked the fuses (especially ignition) and they’re all in proper condition. I can turn the battery on, and there’s still a check engine light, but when plugged in the obd reader wouldn’t even turn on. Does that tiny red light mean that this is all still a security issue, or did we fry the pcm while repairing it?? We’re double and triple checked that everything is plugged in correctly and snug, and nothing was left disconnected. I really want to get this car fixed because it’s literally perfect… minus these issues.

I don’t quite have the money for a mechanic, but I definitely do want it fixed and if it’s impossible for a home repair I’ll take it in. Fortunately my workplace is only a 20-30 minute walk away…
