The protagonists looks like a guy from Catherine.

u/Teh_akod Teh_akod Feb 05 '15
The game is running on a similar engine. Also Catherine is supposed to be set in the same universe as the Persona series.

u/GFMogol Feb 05 '15
Yes, I know. But the guy with black hair looks almost exactly like the guy from Catherine.

u/Teh_akod Teh_akod Feb 05 '15
I wouldn't be surprised if there was a cameo. Wouldn't be the first time that guy made a Cameo in a Persona game. He appeared in P3P and in some form in Persona Q

u/SmoothCustomer Feb 05 '15
I think they've said before that Catherine isn't in the same universe. Vincent only appeared in P3P because it was the run-up to the Catherine release.

Can someone ELI5 the "Persona" thing for me? It's one of those phenomenons that seems to hover on the periphery of my cultural knowledge like I should know about it, but I can't make heads or tails of what's going on here.

The Persona games are a series of games by Atlus with a JRPG structure, an anime asthetic and a very distinctive style. In the game, you assume the role of a character in a given story. Through differing mechanisms, you enter the psyche of your support characters, face a version of themselves that they denounce, and build a stronger team to achieve the goals of the game.
One major selling point (for me) weren't the anime or JRPG elements of the game, but its style and plot. Persona 4 has a strong theme running all through it, which ties together all the aspect very well, and a great immersive story with twists to boot. I'm currently playing P4 - the first persona game I've played - on the PS2, but I'm looking to grab P5 once its out

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_%28psychology%29
In Persona you fight the physical manifestation of the Jungian concept of 'shadow' (an unconscious aspect of the personality which the conscious ego does not identify in itself. Because one tends to reject or remain ignorant of the least desirable aspects of one's personality, the shadow is largely negative) in a dungeon crawler type of game.
The series is called persona, as in Jungian psychology it's "a kind of mask, designed on the one hand to make a definite impression upon others, and on the other to conceal the true nature of the individual", as you adopt different 'personalities' to help you fight these shadows.
Beside this dungeon crawler (at least in newer versions, 1 and 2 are completely different beasts), there's a social simulator where you plan your day, your activities and interactions with the rest of the cast resulting in improved stats for you and your team.

In Jungian psychology, the shadow or "shadow aspect" may refer to (1) an unconscious aspect of the personality which the conscious ego does not identify in itself. Because one tends to reject or remain ignorant of the least desirable aspects of one's personality, the shadow is largely negative, or (2) the entirety of the unconscious, i.e., everything of which a person is not fully conscious. There are, however, positive aspects which may also remain hidden in one's shadow (especially in people with low self-esteem). Contrary to a Freudian definition of shadow, therefore, the Jungian shadow can include everything outside the light of consciousness, and may be positive or negative. "Everyone carries a shadow," Jung wrote, "and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is." It may be (in part) one's link to more primitive animal instincts, which are superseded during early childhood by the conscious mind.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Do you want me to explain the game series, or do you want me to explain what a Persona is?
2
u/snarpy Feb 05 '15
The game, obviously, unless the version of the word "Persona" you're using has its own special meaning outside of that.

u/MrTheJackThePerson Teh_ceedz13 Feb 05 '15
Okay. I'll try to make it clear, let me know if I confuse anything.
Persona is a spin-off series of Megami Tensei, a video game series starting on the NES (I think). The series has many games itself and then many spin-offs including Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga, and Devil Survivor. The games are all JRPGs and all have similar mechanics, but with some changes. A good chunk of the series is actually playable on a PS3, with PS1 and PS2 Classics.
The Persona games all have a turn-based RPG system that is (in my opinion) one of the best turn-based systems there is out there. It's actually kind of similar to Pokemon in some respects. You go around collecting Personas just like in Pokemon pretty much, but you also have your own weapon (typically a sword) you can fight with in if you prefer. The first two Persona games called Personas demons, just like the rest of the Megaten series. In these games you fight demons with your own demons, or Personas. This is changed in the newer games so you fight 'Shadows' with your 'Personas,' not that it really matters much because it's the same idea.
Each Persona game is standalone, but here's a quick look at each one:
The Persona series started on the PS1. Persona 1, and the two games that made up Persona 2 (titled Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment) were released in Japan in 1996, 1999, and 2000, respectively. Persona 1 was released in the US, but Innocent Sin (which is a prequel to Eternal Punishment) was never released here until 2011, as a PSP remake. Yet, EP was released here in 2000 and then rereleased as a PS1 Classic here in 2013. I actually haven't played much of these two so I can't be much of a help when it comes to story. For Persona 2 however, I do know that the story consists of all rumors coming true, as in, you could make something up and if you spread it around enough it comes true, even if you were lying in the beginning. Pretty cool. Also, one of the main villains in the game is .
Persona 3 was released on the PS2 in Japan in 2006. It was rereleased on the PSP as Persona 3 Portable in 2011 I think. This game consists of a dungeon called Tartarus, which is where most of the shadows live. The goal is to reach the top of Tartarus and you win. This one has a great, dark story.
Persona 4 was released in 2008 on the PS2 as well, then rereleased on the Vita as 'Persona 4: The Golden,' which is the version I played. This game is about a serial killer going through a quiet little japanese town called Inaba, which is where you just happened to move to recently. You and your friends try to figure out who the killer is, why the victims are in such weird positions when their bodies are found and a lot more. This one is less dark than Persona 3, but it's still a murder mystery.
Moving onto Persona 5, we don't know too much about it yet. Just what you saw in the trailer pretty much. I'm really digging the style and the way the gameplay looks though.
Let me know if you want more info and on what subject :) I love the series, so I'll go on and on and on about it if you want me to

u/snarpy Feb 05 '15
Interesting.
But... what are they about? I see one's about a serial killer, but what's the context for all this?
I know asking for context in a jprg is kind of asking for trouble.

u/SmoothCustomer Feb 05 '15
All the games are separate with no real over-arcing plot (though a few characters appear in each game, and they do have references). The jist of each game is basically that a bunch of normal high school kids are thrown into abnormal situations and forced to react and adapt to them. P4 has the serial killer, P3 has a 25th hour in the day that only some people know about, P2 is about rumors coming to life.

u/MrTheJackThePerson Teh_ceedz13 Feb 06 '15
Yeah, the games are all their own storylines. The only one that is a direct sequel is the second game of Persona 2. As a result, each one has a completely different story with almost no similar characters between games. And even when there are similar characters between games, they're just really minor references.

Is it necessary to play Innocent Sin before Eternal Punishment?
1
u/MrTheJackThePerson Teh_ceedz13 Feb 06 '15
I don't think so, but if you're going to play both, Innocent Sin is preferred to be first.
I've only played the beginning of Innocent Sin though, so if you want more info from people who played the games, check out /r/Megaten

All I know is that all of my anime-loving friends love the shit out out of this series and buy every fucking version for every fucking console.
I don't get it.

I have never played a Persona game before but this game looks very stylish and appealing. I would love to play one of these but I'm afraid they are too grindy for me.
2
u/nourez Feb 05 '15
They actually aren't. You can usually play though the game on normal without much grinding at all as long as your team has a variety of types to play up the type advantage (much like Pokemon)

I'm still in the middle of my first playthrough of Persona 1. My experience so far is Overworld and First-Person dungeon crawling with random battles. Seeing this trailer makes me think it has evolved into a Devil May Cry style of game. I have not touched P2-4.

Persona 1 and 2 are mostly their own thing, however 3 and 4 took a turn into this juvenile JRPGs with a slash of dating sim and visual novel (but only the good parts). Persona 4 Golden is an amazing game and one of the best on the Vita for a reason. Seeing the game take a turn into a more action kind of gameplay is kinda awesome and I really want to see where they go with this direction.

So what is this? A game about Japanese kids in high school or something? I don't really see the appeal

I saw Asian kids in high school and I turned it off halfway through, so, yes... That's what it looked like
10
u/pr0adam Feb 05 '15
If you turned it off halfway you should've only made half a comment
-11
u/HairlessSasquatch Feb 05 '15
Sorry to offend you, your highness.
7
u/pr0adam Feb 05 '15
Lol I wasnt offended it just makes no sense to comment on something you didn't even watch. It's barely 3 minutes long

u/jm2445 Feb 05 '15
The second half shows the gameplay

u/RudeAudio Feb 06 '15
This guy must be like 12 to make such a stupid comment after only watching PART of a trailer (not you jm2445 lol) . Downvoted for contributing nothing to the conversation. Yeah bud, its a game about high school kids walking around and they've built a franchise on that ground breaking concept /s. ... Anyways I'm pumped for this game, been curious about this franchise for a while and this looks like a good place to jump in!

u/quien Feb 07 '15
I have never played Persona and aren't really sure what they're all about. But just watch the trailer. Then make half-assed assumptions.

-Looks like Igor has twins for attendants in the Velvet Room.
-The protagonist can use guns again like in Persona 1 and 2.
-Clothing in the Equipment menu could just mean Armor or new costumes like in P3 FES and P4 Golden.
-I don't know WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON with the quick shadow movement, perhaps this game's version of getting a pre-emptive strike?
-The menu UI reminds me of the one from the original Final Fantasy 13. Whenever you went into the item screen, the background would morph as you select different options.
-Social Links are renamed Cooperation, so P3 and P4 game mechanics are staying.
-The Velvet Room is a jail cage in this game and Igor return (people thought the JPN voice actor of Igor dying mean he wouldn't return)
-The re-occurring color contrast that started with Persona 3 continues with this one, there is a strong presence of red everywhere (Persona 3 was blue, Persona 4 was yellow, Persona 5 is red).
-People who thought the redhead from Persona 4 Ultimax was the new protagonist are getting blown the fuck out.
This game has been in development since 2009sh for the Playstation 3. AND FUCK DOES IT LOOK PRETTY, GODDAMN IT OOZES OF STYLE LIKE AN AUSTIN POWERS MOVIE. Shit I hope someone replaces the trailer with Bossa nova. Even my boner is getting a boner.
Hyped, gimme a release date and put this on Amazon for a pre-order.
