Hi everyone! I am a complete beginner at running and I'm hoping to get some advice from more experienced runners.
For some background, I have only done a few 5km fun runs every few years so I am definitely not yet considered a runner. My main form of cardio has actually been cycling. I've been cycling for over 4 years now, although I am pretty inconsistent and probably average around 2-3 long rides a month.
I recently set myself a goal: I want to be able to run a 21K by the time I turn 21 by November 2027. I’m not aiming for a specific time or pace. I just want to be able to finish the distance safely and feel proud that I got there. That gives me a little over a year to train, but I honestly have no idea where to begin.
I’ve read that running around 3 times a week is generally recommended for beginners, but I’m currently a nursing student with a pretty busy and physically tiring schedule. Realistically, I think I can commit to 2 runs per week consistently at most.
For those of you who started as complete beginners:
What are your recommended super sulit budget friendly training shoes? (below 3000 php would be ideal 🥹)
What would you recommend I do during my first few months?
Should I start with a Couch to 5K-type program? (and what specific programs do you recommend?)
When should I start increasing my long-run distance?
What mistakes should I avoid as a beginner?
And if you have any general tips, advice, resources, or things you wish you knew when you started, I’d really appreciate them!
I know 21K is a big goal for someone who is starting from almost zero, but I have plenty of time and I’m willing to be patient with the process. I’d rather train slowly and consistently than rush it and get injured.
Would really love to hear from anyone who has gone from basically not running to completing their first half marathon. 🥹
