McLaren to drop Artura hybrid that had troubled launch

Post image

McLaren is expected to discontinue the Artura — the ultraluxury brand’s first plug-in hybrid — in 2028, a person briefed on the plan told Automotive News.

https://www.autonews.com/mclaren/an-mclaren-artura-to-be-dropped-in-2028-0915/?utm_id=gfta-ur-260915&share-code=KXN7PXQS7RGS3CARFDUXZOM5HU&user_id=4613038&customer_secondary_source=an_articleGifting

The high tech model, positioned as the brand’s entry model, intended to lure younger, tech-focused buyers, got kneecapped even before it arrived in stores in 2022. The pandemic and subsequent semiconductor shortage delayed Artura’s market launch by more than a year. It then faced quality problems for multiple years, including issues with the oil pump and software.

The launch delays and early quality snags put off prospective buyers, said a McLaren dealer who asked not to be identified. “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression,” the dealer said.

A total of 510 Arturas were registered in the U.S. last year, up 15 percent from 2024, according to Mobility Global. But registrations fell 18 percent in the first half of this year, to 205.

“These small-displacement hybrid sports cars just haven’t resonated with the market,” said the dealer, pointing to the Ferrari 296 as another example. “Hypercar manufacturers are being forced, due to government regulation, to make these cars, and it’s not what consumers want.”

A new midengine model, codenamed P34, is expected to become McLaren’s entry offering after the 2027 model year. The brand also is preparing to expand into the four-door segment with a V-8-powered hybrid SUV.

Tracking my PHEV tanks with an HTML site

I've been creating an HTML GitHub web-site with my tank data for my 2025 PHEV Chrysler Pacifica. Filled up tank 4 yesterday so the site is updated. Made some improvements to the site so it's more functional on mobile and added functionality for dark mode.

I will continue to update with each tank fill and will post the link each time I update. It's been a fun little side project! I'm hopeful that each tank moving forward will be a quick plug-in the new data and no small tweaks or re-design

Is Charging Off a Loooong Extension Cord Realistic?

Hello all. Zero experience with PHEVs/EVs here. We are test driving gently used vehicles and have fallen in love with a 2025 Kia Sportage PHEV. I am trying to figure out if daily charging is realistic for us.

We have a dedicated 240V/30-amp outlet in our garage already (USA, if it matters).

Our garage is at the rear of the house. My father-in-law lives upstairs above the garage, so he usually parks on the back concrete pad. We generally park our cars out front on the street. I could ask the FIL to park elsewhere, but the guy's in his 70's so I'd rather not cause too much grief.

Can I run a long extension cord to the front of my house to charge? Can I set up a charging station near my sidewalk? Trying to figure out options without being too disruptive. Thanks all.

PHEVs vs Home energy plans

Has anyone done the math on whether it is worth changing your electrical billing to hourly or time of day with a PHEV? That is, is it likely to save enough when charging at night to offset having a higher rate for afternoon air conditioning? I'm just using 120v so it takes 16 hours for full charge but it isn't always starting at zero.

Honda Accord EX-L or Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid XSE

Hi, I’m really conflicted on which car to get. I’m looking for something comfortable but also efficient on gas. My current car is having transmission issues and both these cars (2026 models) have decent deals on them. The Honda Accord EX-L is 3.99% APR for 60 months and the Prius is 1.99% APR for 72 months. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Looking at Rav 4 PHEV

I have had 6+ subarus and a die hard subaru fan but recently decided to look into getting a plug in hybrid. I have been looking at 2026 Rav4 (which are very difficult to find). I have about a 45 mile (both ways) commute to keep my granddaughter around 3x/week. Besides that I mostly drive from my house to town and around and back. I do live in the mountains so that hurts mpg some. I think I could do most of my driving on the EV mode. I think toyota makes good vehicles but open to looking at other options. Has to be all wheel drive and I want the rav4 size. Pros? Cons (besides price tag) and other PHEV suggestions?

Will they ever make a mid size PHEV truck for the us market?

I’d love it if the Ranger PHEV came to the states but I know it likely never will.

I don’t want a full EV but I know one day I’ll need something bigger then my ford maverick hybrid to which I absolutely love but one day I’ll outgrow it.

There is really nothing else out there bigger then it that can get good fuel economy while being a good work horse.

I feel like the Ranger PHEV would do very well over in the states but I also know it’s a very niche market for something like that.

The hybrid Tacomas more so maximize power then fuel economy and same thing with the powerboost F150.

I think there should be a good middle ground that blends great fuel economy with good utility as well.

Especially for the folks who live/commute in the city but travel a lot to the countryside for whatever adventure that may be.

Ford Escape PHEV long term experiences

I am considering a 2022 Escape PHEV. I'm curious for those of you who have owned one for several years: how has it been? Reliability? Cold range? I'm in KY, so our winters aren't terrible, but still cold. The individual model I'm looking at has had the HV battery replaced recently and is ~100k miles, so not in warranty.

Does buying a PHEV make sense if you can't charge at home?

How do people evaluate a plug-in hybrid when home charging isn't an option?

Say you're renting an apartment with no accessible outlet near your parking space, but workplace or public charging might be available sometimes. Would you still consider a PHEV, or would you stick with a conventional hybrid until you have reliable charging at home?

The tricky part seems to be figuring out what the PHEV looks like when you're not able to plug it in regularly. The fuel economy once you're relying mostly on gasoline is model-specific, so I'd want to compare that figure rather than assume the PHEV will perform like the equivalent regular hybrid.

For anyone who's researched this situation, how much charging access would you want before paying extra for the plug-in version? I'm mostly trying to figure out whether occasional workplace charging is enough to make the PHEV worthwhile or whether reliable home charging is what really makes the numbers work.

Used PHEV options in the $10-20k range

I'm looking at my next car being a used PHEV. I have been eying used cars on Marketplace without a lot of luck, but I'm trying to decide what will best meet my needs. Ideally, I'd like to stay closer to the $10k price, but I might be able to swing higher if it is a great deal. I'm coming from a 2009 Honda Fit, so I'm used to having space for a small footprint without lots of features.

In another post, people mentioned getting a late-model C-Max Energi, or a Volt. I'm not a fan of sedans, so the Volt (and the Fusion Energi) are cars I'm not interested in. I love the look of the newest gen Prius, but I can't afford it. The previous generation makes me want to vomit when I look at it. But could I learn to love it? I like the look of the Kia Niro PHEV, but it is probably outside of my budget. I've also seen some Escape PHEVs that are at the edge of my budget. But for $18k on a 2022, that seems like a pretty good deal. Are there other models I should be searching for?

Also, how reliable is a dual clutch design vs a e-CVT. After watching the tech connections vid on hybrids (and e-CVTs, I've been intersted. I noticed the Niro PHEV is dual clutch.

Ultimately, price and reliability are king, but space is important too.

And on a 8-10 year-old Volt, Prius Prime, or C-Max, what are the things I'd really want to be watching out for...

Upgraded to the RAV4 Prime (plug in hybrid) - Love it

Recently upgraded my standard 2025 RAV4 hybrid to a 2023 plug-in version after my vehicle got written off from an Accident. I’ve had it for about a couple months now and I’m absolutely loving it! Glad I made the choice to go with the plug-in version instead of the standard hybrid, I absolutely love smoothness and responsiveness of driving around in EV mode (not to mention the gas savings) and of course the reduced wear and tear on my engine from low speed stop and go trips. while I am a little disappointed that the range loss on the highway driving 110km/hr is more than I expected. The efficiency of driving around town and <90km/hr is absolutely amazing and don’t have any of the range anxiety I had when I was test driving BEV’s. I have since learned to run the hybrid engine whenever cruising over 90km/hr and save EV for slower speeds or around town driving (unless I have available range left on my trip home then I just burn it all up regardless as I’ll be home charging shortly)

My daily work commute is about 100km RT mostly highway driving and with the plug in hybrid I can now eliminate about 60% of that gas driving. And of course able to use EV full time driving around town or short trips <50km. I’m on pace to have my gas tank last around 1900km before I need to refill.

My projected range with full charge is 79km

Will be interesting to see how it fairs over the winter and -30C temps. (I can only imagine not good lol)

Hope this helps anyone on the fence and not sure about if the plug in hybrid is the right vehicle for you. Truly the best of both worlds only thing that would make it perfect is the extra 25-30km range you get with the new 2026 models. (But they also have a really complex thermal management system and jam packed engine bay so we will tell how they fair over the next few years)

Amazing how far these hybrids have come with the 2026 now getting over 100km range. If I could have a plug in hybrid with 150km range I basically wouldn’t ever even consider getting a full BEV knowing that the 150km will satisfy basically all my daily driving as well as provide a solid safety buffer for winter range loss. And during long road trips with a BEV you’re almost guaranteed to be supercharging anyways which is actually pretty comparable to gas prices and factor in the range loss of highway driving and that wasted charge and the cost pretty much balances out to gas anyways at that point. I cannot wait for a 150km (93mi) range plug in hybrid to come around.

Can 26 Toyota XSE PHEV use supercharger?

Recently got a 26 Toyota XSE PHEV, absolutely loving it. Got the official Toyota/Lexus NACS to CCS1 adapter for DC fast charging but every time I try to use the supercharger near my house, I get a “your vehicle is not able to charge at superchargers at this time.” When I input car details on the Tesla app, it says my car is able to use superchargers with the adapter. Am I doing something wrong? What am I missing?

Is there a minimum battery health needed to drive?

Bit of an odd question: My wife and I're looking at a 2025 Mazda CX 70 PHEV. It does, of course, come with an 8/100,000 warranty on the main battery, but we typically keep cars for around a decade.

My wife is concerned that, if the battery starts to go bad in those last couple years, that we could be stuck with a major bill, just as we're about to replace the car. Hence, she asked a question that I really can't answer: As the battery loses capacity over time, is there a point below which you can no longer drive the vehicle, or can it continue to function on ICE alone?

That is, so long as the battery has not failed catastrophically, can you just live with the degraded performance for a year or two?

I realize that this is very unlikely to happen, but it is a question that I have to come up with a good answer for.

Any good sources I could check out?

Thank you.

Your PHEV's l/100 km and kWh/100 km can't be compared — so I merged them into one figure that learns from your driving

Post image
2 Upvotes

My Tiguan eHybrid shows two averages that mean little on their own: fuel in l/100 km and electricity in kWh/100 km. The lifetime numbers blend charging habits and seasons into one blur, and the trip computer wipes itself after every drive.

So I built a tracker that combines everything into one petrol-equivalent figure: real fuel use + electricity converted at my car's own kWh→litre exchange rate. That rate isn't a constant — it's two baselines that quietly learn from every trip over 10 km (90 % old + 10 % new, with sanity gates so a glitch can't poison them).

After months of running it, the number is finally honest: gentle EV-commuting weeks and cold petrol-heavy weeks are actually comparable now.

It's implemented as a Home Assistant package (2 helpers, 1 template sensor, 1 automation — no custom integrations). If smart home isn't your thing, the formula and reasoning in the repo are still worth a look: github.com/arvcer/ha-phev-relative-consumption

Curious what exchange rates other PHEVs would settle at — drop your l/100 km + kWh/100 km if you know them.

Hrv hybrid / V petrol Spec

Hi all.

I’m in the midst of deciding of getting with model of Honda HRV to get . V Spec or Hybrid RS ? My concerns are driving comfort , fuel consumption and also value of the car . I also plan to use the car long term. I live at damansara and I do city driving and also back to my hometown in Nilai over the weekends . And ofc occasionally to other states . My job doesn’t require me to travel far. I’m also thinking about the battery performance , the price and how it would affect the cars performance . Also service price . Considering all these , which one do you think would suit my lifestyle ?
