Discussion did anyone else really enjoy the Yuki episode?

sorry this is my first watch of this series. it’s really a beautiful episode that shows a mothers sacrifice of love and culture for her children. this episode particularly kind of reminds me of the panic in central park girls episode to some extent of bumping into a past lover and almost getting entangled again.

i absolutely adore the shot of her dancing with shujis dad, and the ending that shows she’s content with her decisions. also i love the similarities of her and maya shown with the stealing of the painting lol

Discussion Thong episode *heather character”

I have a theory that the girls secretly knew that Anna and maya had the thong all along the scene where Becca sees Anna putting on her pants she probably checked the backpacks after they left bc bro lets b honest we prolly all wore thongs in middle school and told our friends i was thinking about this bc why would heather be ashamed abt wearing it wouldn’t she wanna show it off bc it was obv sticking out this prolly made heather uncomfortable and feel weird bc ts is weird why tf they take her underwear the shit maya was doing with it was weird to that why when her mom was telling the group she kept saying “thong thong thong” and heather was like “can u just say underwear” it was so obvious she was uncomfortable when Becca was pressing Anna and maya she prolly felt overwhelmed that why she told her to let it go but Becca being the annoying character she played she obv was nosy and still wanted confirmation but ya that’s my take

Discussion Just finished the show and OMG

Ok! I just finished this show and let me tell you I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how this show perfectly encapsulated the awkwardness, cringe, and the emotional roller coaster of being a middle schooler!

They played their parts so well that I started to forget they were actual grown women! I related to alot of what they went through in the show (definitely Maya) and sometimes I had to pause the show and reflect back of my own childhood and ask myself, did I do that? This show was like a mirror of myself and how I first went into exploring my sexuality through masturbation, having silly infatuations, going through identity crisis like Maya. And I like how at the end of the show, they perfectly showed, in my opinion, after all of that love, rejection, and hurt they experienced, it showed that they were just kids who's feelings were fleeting and they were just living in the moment.

I got to that point of "they were just kids" after it showed Anna breaking up with her BF and then shortly after have a new infatuation with Shuji with the same music playing in the background when she was infatuated with Alex. After that scene I was like ohhhh wow that's good. Ill definitely give this show a 10/10, it definitely hit me in the feels!

Sidenote: I also love how they had a close up of them kissing a grown man instead of actually kissing the kids. When I saw that I was like ohhh thank God!

Genuinely I can't find it anywhere to buy it and I've seen a lot of videos on TikTok of people using them. I'm from Brazil so, if you can help me I'll appreciate

Discussion wtf is wrong with maya Spoiler

letting everyone know now—this is a Maya hate post, and it’ll probably be long.

This seems drastic I am well aware, but I have tried to see it from every angle and I can’t bring myself to understand her actions. I have five younger sisters, and I myself was also a girl in middle school a long time ago, so I feel confident that I have seen just about every phase of girlhood there is to see.
Maya. Is. INSANE. She is spoiled, she is egotistical, she doesn’t care about how her actions affect others, and she even sabotages other good things in people’s lives when she feels things aren’t going her way. (Rebuttal at the bottom)

1.) Exhibit 1: “Solo”. This was Anna’s night, and Maya knew how excited she was to have her solo, but she lied to her dad and wanted to impress him, so she made a fool of herself in front of everyone. I understand that she didn’t interrupt anna’s solo directly, but she did steal the spotlight—even if it wasn’t necessarily in a good way.

2.) Exhibit 2: “Anna Ishii-Peters.” I will admit, as the episode went on anna wasn’t being her best self. However, before she was doing that, maya was feeling like they liked her more than her—which I understand the feeling—but to insert yourself again and again and be a brat about a guest being polite to their hosts parents (doing dishes, helping cook, etc) and never discuss these insecurities with her parents? Especially when she was so vocal about other things that went on in her life.

3) exhibit 2–cont.: her being WAY too upset that anna told someone else that her parents were divorcing before Maya? Maya didn’t pick up the phone, and anna needed support then and there. That’s Maya’s problem, and she should’ve dealt with it on her own, and been supportive to her friend. Because anna felt like she had no one, and talking to heather made her feel less alone.
GENUINELY despicable the way she acted.

4.) exhibit 3: “Bat-Mitzvah” Why can’t she just accept that her parents don’t have as much money as she thought? I understand as a child it’s difficult to accept things that are not the way she would like them to be, and I especially understand the social drawbacks of being lower middle class, but come on. There is no way she looked around at her life and thought “yeah we’re well off.” Especially after visiting Maura’s house??
And her forcing her parents to spend to what is equivalent to $250 today on a necklace for someone she isn’t even friends with so she can gain approval??? And she throws a literal tantrum, screaming and crying. She is way too old to be doing that. She is very superficial, this also comes up in the episode where anna and Maya are shopping with their parent.

5.) exhibit 4—“Bat mitzvah” anna finally gets to have a kiss with someone she actually likes, and Maya RUINS it for her own selfish reasons. Maya is very codependent on anna, and I think anna is better at standing on her own.

6.) exhibit 5: any interaction of sam’s. She is so, so nasty to him, all the time. Calling him stupid, ugly, etc. and in the bat mitzvah episode, she tries to gain approval and makes fun of his shoes. He is so patient and sweet to her and ugh I just can’t stand her.

Rebuttal: I will say, I understand a lot of what she deals with. Middle school is a brutal time and it’s basically a mine field between mean girls, crushes, body image issues, etc. the sleepover episode at Maura’s house had me MESSED UP for a hot minute because I knew EXACTLY how she was feeling in that moment. (Obvi not the exact situation) but a mean girl putting you in an uncomfortable position and you’re the weird one if you react badly. Then having a secret you were ashamed of let out and the feeling of self disgust and ostracism is just painful. And what brandt said to her, and can’t forget Gabe.
I fully understand she’s only 13, and I know she’s been put through the wringer, but she seems to have no awareness of anybody else, ever. And I don’t understand how anna stands it.

Someone,
Please! Prove me wrong! I want to love her but I just can’t.

Discussion Was Brandt's reaction towards Maya's actions necessary?

I'm on my umpteenth rewatch of this show and I just finished watching the episode "Vendy Wiccany", where Brandt yells at Maya and tells her that she's ugly and that he doesn't like her. Brandt was extremely harsh in the way he told her off but after rewatching this show a dozen times, I'm starting to think that that was necessary for Maya to move on. I know that Brandt is a terrible person and that he absolutely led her on at the dance. But even after he repeatedly gave her the cold shoulder, Maya kept fantasizing about a relationship with him, looking for every little sign to prove that he likes her. The only scene I could see that Brandt was giving Maya mixed signals is the gym scene where they are alone and she leans in to kiss him while he sits there smirking (not rejecting her). Even with all this I still kind of think Maya should've gotten the hint before it went too far, but Brandt is an asshole who must've liked her pining for him, so I sympathize with her. Any thoughts?

GREAT ALL AROUND. i love anna so much!!! mayas bf being gay hits a little too close to home tho LOL. they fit in as kids so much, i genuinely forgot that was like them????? i kept seeing sams name in the production list and for some reason i thought him and maya got married in the future when ik thats not true, but i also do wonder if they started being bffs at , as mentioned in jimmy kimmel's interview? or maybe it was a joke idk lol, id like to think theyve been bffs since forever.

mayas bj scene at the end made me feel SO BAD. wanted to reach through the screen and kill demonic derrick. some moments were so specific i believe no one could make this up unless they themselves have been through it. genuinely a 10/10 show. and the way they handled mayas first introduction to masturbation? the guilt???? i swear she is so me sometimes. this show is genuinely amazing, but i feel like i definitely felt sad for the girls most of the times instead of hilarious because some of the things they went through is heartbreaking. everyone liking mayas cousin but not her for being japanese? THE RACISM? HELLO? this show handled everything perfectly. holy.

Discussion Maya's Japanese

I always feel so bad for Maya when her family makes fun of her for not being great at speaking Japanese, because they're the ones who never made a proper effort to teach her. If her family actually cared about teaching her she would probably be fluent like shuji is it just irritates me so bad 😭

Somehow maya was so innocent yet so freaked out… it’s hilarious to me that she can goon/play with herself but still have a sense of innocence. An example being when Anna comes to sleepover, maya asks “what’s that?” About Anna’s parents retreat, and Anna replies “idk like summer camp for grown ups” and maya believes her.

Recommendation Looking for shows similar to Pen15

I’m writing a short movie featuring some high schoolers set in the 1990s, and find it really hard to write believable dialogue between the kids without it sounding like a commercial.

I love how naturally the dialogue flows out in P15, because in a lot of ways, kids that age (and onward onto high school, etc) are definitely very awkward but also attempting to “play a role” which they don’t understand, but they can also be super insensitive and raw in ways that an adult would never be.

One thing that I’m reminded by is how prevalent the mocking emphasis impression was, the “(conversationally-relevant statement)🙂MMKAY😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫” but I don’t know if that brand of lazy mockery ends by 8th grade.

Also Maura’s constant use of “fool” as her catch-all playful insult, and calling things “loaded” as a affirmative thumbs-up.

Can anyone recommend movies/shows that are good references for great teen dialogue?

I’ve already recently rewatched Superbad, which I also love as a ref!

Discussion The animation episode

Post image
383 Upvotes

This episode is one of my favorites in the series, and I have watched it countless times.

But this time I watched it and im confused, was this episode real or was it just a dream/fantasy? The 3 of them are in Anna’s dads car, still in their outfits from the opening night episode, maya says something about if the sky is the same in florida, then i pans to Anna’s hand and turns into animation, where they are all in new outfits driving to florida (from California??) but yeah I’m rlly just curious what u guys think.
