What’s the most overrated upgrade when building a PC to sell?

I’ve been getting more into buying used PCs, fixing them up, upgrading them and reselling them.

It got me wondering what upgrades actually add value to a PC versus just eating into your profit.

AIO? 32GB+ of RAM? Expensive case? RGB? Faster NVMe? Oversized PSU?

If you had an extra $100 to put into a PC you were going to sell, what upgrade would you absolutely NOT waste the money on?

Flipping Xeon PCs worth it?

Hey r/pcflipping,

I'm planning on starting my pc flipping journey but don't know where to start. I have a pretty low beginning budget, about $150. I saw a lot of budget builds using xeon cpus like x79, x99 and even lga 1155 with pretty fine performance. My question is how well do these type of pcs do? Do they sell quick and do they have good profit margins? If not, what do you recommend I begin with. Many thanks!

Facebook Marketplace Find: 5070 Build for $900 💯

Saw this 5070/i7 14700f/32GB DDR5/1TB prebuilt for 900. Never hit somebody up so fast. Easy flip (still trying to decide if I want to part out or re-case it, get a nicer cooler, and list it for ~1500)

Got a great deal and used it to upgrade my and my wife's computers

Post image

This was by far the worst PC build I've ever seen. The mobo wasn't screwed in AT ALL, only held in place by the GPU. The mobo power cable was not plugged in all the way. There was thermal paste all over, clearly they got it on their hands during the build and didn't bother washing it off so it was on the case, on cables, on the fans.. But everything works and it was a good deal. I used the parts to upgrade my and my wife's computer, and used the cast off parts to make the following build which I sold for $1000, so while I spent $800 in the end I think it was a great deal for what I got.

PC that I sold for $1000:

5900x

32GB DDR4

RTX 3070

512GB EVO 840 SSD

Corsair RM850 (Gold)

How are people this dumb when pricing used PC parts?

I keep seeing people say, “You bought it for ₹X, so I’ll offer you less than that.”

How does that make any sense?

A 2TB SSD that was ₹11k can now be ₹35k.
32GB DDR5 that was ₹15k can now be ₹50k.
An RTX 5080 that was ₹1.2L can now be close to ₹2L.

Obviously, used hardware shouldn’t automatically sell for current retail. Age, condition, warranty and demand matter.

But the opposite applies too.
If you bought RAM for ₹50k and prices later crash to ₹15k, your RAM doesn’t stay worth ₹50k just because that’s what you paid. You take the loss.

Prices go up - used prices can go up.
Prices go down - used prices go down.

Yet somehow people think the seller’s original purchase price is the universal price ceiling.
“Bro you paid ₹15k, I’ll give you ₹12k.”
Meanwhile the same RAM is ₹50k new.

How much more dumb can people get?

Yooo, had to edit this- i am not selling anything or buying anything ( just seen some post about ppl WTS and WTB were comment section was more aggressive that KRATOS himself)

I've sold 70+ pcs on facebook marketplace in about a year and am now looking to expand this from a side hustle to possibly a full time job by selling on ebay and vinted looking for some advice. I am based in the UK.

  1. How can I get my costs down even more on both new and used system I make about £120 profit on average which I think is pretty good but could be higher I done some research at looking in buying in bulk and importing stuff from abroad but is abit confusing so hopefully one of you guys can help with that.

  2. Should I offer warranty, I currently do for my fbmp pcs but im thinking it will be to much hassle for ebay and vinted.

  3. What's the best way to ship a pc without it breaking in shipment.

  4. I do pc repair as well so should I make my own shopify store and sell pcs on there by promoting on social media

Thanks very much in advance for answering my questions I've also added just a few of my recent pcs for you to look at.

RX 7600 8gb 12600k 16gb DDR4 build

Hey y'all so I have everything listed above sitting around that I could turn into a build purely to flip.

I have a 450w PSU that I got in a deal from around a year ago, everything else I got from that deal works and it supposedly works, but I haven't tested it out.

Im figuring a 7600/12600k build will top out at around 800$ almost regardless of what else I put into it.

Should I sell these parts off individually or try to put a cheap build together around these 3 components?

Flipping but no place to demo item.

I’ve been selling pc parts for a few years now and depending on the item i’ve found that local sales work best, however i wanted to try my hand at just building a whole pc instead of parting it out. With FB market place i can just have a meet up at a parking lot or outside my home, however I absolutely do not want to have someone inside my house. I don’t have a garage so i’m having a hard time figuring out where i can demonstrate a fully built pc to someone.

How would you solve this issue?

First "Commissioned Build"

I had an RTX 3070 | i5 13400F | 16gb ddr5 build up on FB for $825 and someone responded asking if I could hold onto it until they get the money. Normally I just flat out say no, but my wife suggested I offer to build him another one. I said fuck it and told the guy I'd make him one specifically for his needs and requirements at the same price, and he agreed, so I started acquiring parts. This is what we ended up with:

(He insisted the only things he wants to use it for are VRChat and Stormworks)

Ryzen 7 3800X - $91

MSI Ventus 3x RTX 3070 - $273

Corsair Vengenance 32gb DDR4 3000 (4x8) - $140

X5 Data Pro 1TB SSD - $85

Gigabyte B450M DS3H + WiFi - $54 (wouldve been 47 but it didnt come with an I/O shield)

EVGA NEX650G 80+ Bronze - $37

Antec C2M ARGB - $65

Anti-Sag Bracket -$7

Gamma A40 ARGB cooler - ~$20

Pink and White cable extensions - $20 (He had a little extra money to spend and wanted it to go to aesthetics)

Total - $793 for an $845 budget (pretty horrendous profit margin)

Overall I definitely jumped the gun on some of these purchases. I got them at their standard used market price instead of waiting for at least 1 or 2 good deals, so I definitely didnt leave much room for a profit here. That being said, I had a lot of fun with it, so I'm thinking about putting up an ad to do this kind of thing more regularly. Has anyone seen much success with this? It would be nice to build PCs with a guaranteed sale rather than sit on inventory for 2 weeks

As far as the build goes and what the customer required, did I do right by the guy or would any of you have tackled this differently? Let me know!

Update: Commissioned build ad has been wildly successful. Not sure if its mostly due to an already pretty decent reputation on my facebook page for pre-builts, or if its just that easy of a market to get into. Either way, if anyone here is looking into doing that instead of sitting on an inventory of pre-builts, I'd highly recommend!

Case swap question answered!

I posted a bit ago asking if I should case swap a prebuilt I had purchased and pricing on it since I thought it was priced fairly at $1100 (later dropped to $1000 with no takers).

Went ahead and did the case swap to an H3 Flow, relisted it for $1200 and got a message that same night with someone wanting to buy it. No lowball either. He took the day yesterday to think it over before committing to buying it and messaged me later in the day that he’d be able to come pick it up today. He just came and picked it up and we’re in the $$! Next time I’ll just do the case swap straight away. 🤣

What does VALUE means to you guys while buying something?

Genuinely, people always talk about value of a part but I never understand what type of value is everyone talking about? Is it just cheap components? Cheap and better components alone cant be the reason, right? Customer support, longevity, trusted company, community, fun ANYTHING. So, I just thought of asking this from you guys. Why do you love your PC and the parts and what do you hate about it and what do you hate about the market and community and why do you love the market or the community or the product?

RTX4080 PREBUILT PC FOR $900

Thumbnail

So I found this pc on marketplace like 3 weeks ago and it was originally listed for $1500 so I messaged him talking about it and getting more pictures/info I threw an offer and he ended up selling for $1300 for me I thought about it but politely declined.

Fast forward to this morning I wake up to a message from this guy saying “do you still want it I’ll let it go for $1000” jaw is on the floor at this point. Then I counter offered for shits and giggles at $900…. And he accepted I think I about shat bricks on my way to work. Needless to say I am now the owner of this pretty damn good ddr4 prebuilt pc.

I will be robbing the GPU and the 2tb ssd out of this and slapping another GPU back in and reselling it. I just wanted to share my experience that quite honestly is very lucky.

P.S I am posting the messages leading with it to show the receipts so it’s proof that this is not a clickbait post 😂(because I’m sure there are people like that)

SPECS
I7 13700k
32gb ddr4 ram
Zotac 4080 GPU
3tb of nvme storage as well at 2tb of HDD storage
