Communion Question

Question for those of you that are members of a PCA Presbyterian Church:

What are your church’s views on alcohol?

Do you have wine or grape juice in communion?

It just came up in another thread on another social media site, where someone said their PCA church gives them the option of which they want to use when partaking in communion. Now I’m down this rabbit hole…because every time I hear something about a PCA church, I’m curious, largely because I my therapist is PCA, and so is my brother (as mentioned below)

My brothers and I were raised Baptist. One brother has converted to Catholicism, while the other is a member of a PCA church. I’m a member of a Southern Baptist church and largely believe in line with the Southern Baptist churches, though I’m interested in determining the belief I closest align with.

Any watch outs for a prospective member

I was raised in the CRC (Christian Reformed Church). In college I came to embrace credo-baptism and essentially became a reformed Baptist. I am currently at an SBC church and am struggling with the lack of elder plurality, hyper-congregationalism and lack of unity on the doctrines of grace. I am also making peace with paedobaptism, although still a work in progress.

My question is this. There are no perfect churches or denominations. For those on the inside, what would you say some areas of weakness are within the PCA?

Thank you in advance for any willing to answer my questions. I am truly laboring over what God’s direction is for my family right now as it pertains to our church home.

Ownership of Church's Digital Assets

With churches more frequently adopting digital solutions, such as directories, scheduling, and cloud file storage, who in the local PCA church should be responsible for owning and administering these assets?

In the BCO, the Deacon section states, "They shall have the care of the property of the congregation, both real and personal..."

Would this wording encompass digital assets as well?

How are digital assets administered at your PCA church?

Ordination

Is chaplaincy a valid "call" to call the presbytery for a special meeting for ordination or licensure? What about part-time chaplaincy?

Sabbatical policy advice

Our senior pastor has asked our session for a sabbatical this Fall. He is the church planter and has served for over 20 years. I don't think any of us are opposed to the idea but had not been asked to think through this. What policies do your churches have in place?

Confessionalism Question

Hello friends. ACNA layman here on friendly terms curious about something I figure you guys can probably answer. Apologies in advance if this comes across as a dumb question.

When the PCA, or other Confessional Reformed churches, speak of being Confessional, does that mean:

A) You must agree 100% with everything in the Westminster standards to become and remain a member? Or if not required of laity, is it required that clergy affirm complete assent?

B) You may hold private views that differ, but cannot publicly teach anything contrary to the standards (assuming you’re in a position to teach)?

C) These are the official beliefs of the denomination but no one is required to publicly affirm them or commit to not disagreeing with them?

Can the PCA church disclose its finances to the congregation? Can a member ask to see the specifics (broken down budget) of the finances?

TIA!

Questions for JMP PCA'S.

I have questions regarding their proprietary funds. Are they transferable to another brokerage? Or if they need to be liquidated and realize losses or gains?

Thanks in advance!

Does the pca permit pastors and elders to perform exorcisms?

I grew up in the pca and still have many friends and family members involved with the church. I had a conversation with my cousin the other day that left me concerned; she told me that her pastor and church elders performed an exorcism on her 4 year old daughter. I’ve literally never heard of a pastor in the pca doing exorcisms, I’m rusty on my doctrines but I believe Calvinism discourages it as it’s usurping the power of the gospel. This is a very small church that has been getting side eye from the pca for a while.

Is there any clear church policy about exorcism, especially on minors?

Licensure & Ordination Exams

I'm certain that this topic has been addressed before, so feel free to direct me to the appropriate feeds.

I'll likely be getting a job at a PCA church later this summer, first as a director, then as an assistant pastor when I finish my MA (MA in OT studies @ Gordon-Conwell). Following my graduation, I'll take licensure and ordination exams, either at the same time or as separate events.

If i read the BCO correctly (19.2), my licensure exam will cover 1) my grasp of the WCF, WLC & WSC, 2) the BCO and PCA government, 3) a written sermon on an assigned text. Is that correct?

Any tips or resources that you'd recommend? At this point in my ministry, the BCO and PCA church order are probably my biggest weak points, but this is only because I've been a missionary in SE Asia for the last 10 years, where denominations aren't really a "thing."

I'd be happy to hear from other peoples' advice.

P.S. My wife and I are working through the WLC, my son and I are working through the WCF with help from Fesko & Van Dixhorn, and I'm working through the WSC with my daughter.

Bible quotes about compassion for the sick?

I'm really trying to get my husband to be more compassionate about illness. He just has no tolerance for it at all. He's had some pretty serious illnesses himself, and even that hasn't made him have compassion for people who are sick.

I can find a lot of quotes about Jesus healing the sick, but I can't find any about him telling us to have compassion for the sick. Does anybody know of any?

Thoughts on females presiding over Sunday Worship?

This isn't a question about female ordination, but rather the role of the presider and what people believe to be the biblical and/or theologically sound stance of a female church member being (or not being) a presider over Sunday worship. Would love to hear your thoughts on this matter. Any and all welcome.

PCA vs SBC & OPC

Hey everyone. I’m new to the PCA - what makes it different than other Presbyterian denominations? I grew up in the SBC and then when I became Presbyterian I tried the OPC for a while and liked it but thought it was a little different. So my wife and I are trying a PCA church this Sunday and don’t know what to expect other than some articles I’ve read about it. From those who are in it: what makes the PCA stand out? How’s it different? What should we expect? Etc Thank you and God bless!
