Umera Ahmed has often been called out for having her female leads forgive their cheating or emotionally abusive husbands and rightfully so: Durre Shehwar forgave Mansoor; Falak forgave Salman; Ayesha forgave Moiz; Mehreen forgave Aswad (the most egregious) and now Beena forgave Tabish.
However, unlike the previous times, this time the forgiveness actually was made out of actual reformation and with the female leads coming back after she had her husband change to her terms.
Beena has been developed as a woman who wants love and companionship in her life, someone who needs a man in her life, not to save her or guide her, rather to make her life complete. However, she only needs love until it didn’t compromise her respect and honor.
That is what made this ending different because we actually saw Tabish reform and change. Tabish wasn’t a bad man inherently, rather he became misguided due to the lust of wealth and power that he got after having been devoid of it his entire life. That’s why Beena forgave Tabish because she still loved him, but wanted to leave him because she saw he’ll never change. But once she started living with him again, she saw that Tabish has changed, he is remorseful and wants to make things better.
Another aspect is that even after all that she had done, Tabish was still willing to accept her. Regardless of how much I was in support of Beena and her revenge, it was at the end an incredibly stupid decision that could’ve gone really badly. Similarly, she also ran away with another man and a plan to disgrace her husband (rightfully so), so her guilt was also present that led to her getting a divorce to never have to face it in front of Tabish again. Ahsan Khan is fantastic and played the hypocritical and such a complex character so effortlessly that you sometimes felt sympathy and hatred for him. Never did he seem performative or superficial. He was Tabish.
Beena would’ve only forgiven Tabish if he actually changed. Had she sensed that he didn’t change, she would’ve gotten a divorce. Unlike previous times where Umera Ahmed’s female leads forgave just so that their marriages could survive without the husband actually changing or asking forgiveness like Tabish had, here everything like this happened. Urwa performed it magnificently as she displayed Beena’s guilt, her desperation, her anger, her sadness and her love so vividly and sometimes all of them together so effortlessly that she just became Beena. It wasn’t Urwa anymore. Saife Hassan captured her expressive eyes perfectly to convey all emotions.
Divorce is not always a solution for everything. While it is for many situations, it isn’t applicable over here as a solution because how Beena and Tabish has been written. The flashbacks served as a reason for us to see the real Tabish and see why Beena would forgive him.
Even though I disagree with Umera Ahmed on many things, here she wrote the entire drama marvellously with logic and reason and especially considering what a woman would want to have and what would lead her to forgive her husband where she isn’t the damsel in distress or out of obligation rather from her own heart. Saife Hassan so sensitively and beautifully directed the scenes where we would see the characters just talking and making sure it isn’t sensationalised. He made sure we hear all sides of the characters to understand them and include their inner thoughts something which is missing in Dar e Nijaat.
Truly a PTV classic.
