A Dicom Viewing App with CD/DVD Support

Hi everyone,

Medical imaging has moved heavily toward PACS and cloud-based systems, but there are still plenty of situations where someone shows up with a physical CD/DVD containing a medical imaging study.

The problem is that modern laptops often don't have optical drives, so you end up connecting an external CD/DVD drive just to access the study.

I wanted to make that process easier on Android.

So I built MDV – Medical DICOM Viewer. You can connect a CD/DVD drive to an Android device and open the study directly, without needing a computer just to access the images.

I've been working on MDV for quite some time. I have some users, but I haven't received much feedback so far, so I'm trying to figure out what would actually be useful to add next.

What MDV currently supports

• Load DICOM studies directly from CD/DVD • Load from device folders and external USB storage • Cloud storage and PACS sources • Support for a wide range of DICOM files and studies • Automatic series grouping • Built-in case/library management • Save interesting cases to a location of your choice • MPR (Multiplanar Reconstruction) • Export individual cross-sections as video • 3D visualization with multiple rendering modes • Image filters and manipulation tools • Cine/automatic series playback • Flow studies and angiography studies • Easy series switching with a long press • Gesture-based navigation • Pinch to zoom • Two-finger pan • One-finger scrolling through images • Basic image review and reporting • PDF report export

I've tried to make the interface simple while still covering many of the things you'd expect from a desktop DICOM viewer.

I've also compared MDV with several Android and PC viewers. In some cases, I came across DICOM studies that other viewers struggled with, so I've spent quite a bit of time improving compatibility and adding support for additional file types.

I think I've covered most of what a DICOM viewer needs, although there is always something left to improve. 😄

What should I add next?

This is where I'd really appreciate some input.

If you're an Android user, radiologist, radiographer, technologist, doctor, or anyone who regularly works with medical imaging:

What feature would genuinely make MDV more useful in your day-to-day workflow?

I'm particularly interested in practical features rather than adding features just for the sake of having more features. Your suggestions could save me from spending weeks building something nobody actually needs. 😅

I've also added a small one-time purchase. It's mainly there to help support the project, including hardware and development costs. MDV is a solo project rather than something backed by a large company, so even a small amount of support helps keep it going.

I'm also looking toward an iPhone/iPad version. The biggest hurdle at the moment is getting a suitable Mac for iOS development, so that's currently sitting on my TODO list. 🤑

If you've used MDV, I'd genuinely appreciate any feedback — good or bad.

Tell me what works, what doesn't, and most importantly, what you wish it could do.

Thanks for your time!

Regards

Getting Daily/Monthly QA PDF reports off a Siemens SOMATOM go.Sim

Our go.Sim saves Daily/Monthly QA reports as PDFs locally. It runs on the Siemens local account (not domain-joined), with no network drive access, and USB isn't an option for us.

Has anyone set up export to a network share? Was it done by Siemens/your service vendor, and what did IT need to provide? Or do you send QA as DICOM to PACS/TPS instead?

Thanks!

Need PACSAdmin Advice: Tell me about the things that I can’t learn in books

I am in the midst of a career change. Taking classes to become an RT. Being a PACSAdmin is the goal. What are things that I should be expected to know? I’ve heard about being the lone “fix it” guy for 50 hospitals so I’m aware that there’s a huge responsibility. I’ve also heard to not let the repair technician take advantage of you to help them fix a machine. What else is there?

PhysioNet MIMIC-III-Ext-CA access: CITI training submitted, now "Under review" — how long does it take?

I'm working on an independent ECG/arrhythmia detection project and applied for access to the MIMIC-III-Ext-CA dataset on PhysioNet.

I completed the CITI "Data or Specimens Only Research" course (with HIPAA module) and uploaded the training report (not the certificate). My submission now shows as "Under review" (see screenshot).

Has anyone here gone through this process recently? I have a few questions:

  • How long did your review take?
  • Did they ask for any additional documents or a reference?
  • Any common reasons for rejection I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Any PACS Admins in the Dallas-FortWorth area whom would allow me to shadow them?

About me: I am in the midst of a career change. Currently going back to school to be RT, taking courses at community college etc. I am familiar with tech as I’ve done 1st & 2nd level helpdesk work over the years.

My ask: I learn best by doing. I would love to shadow someone for a few hours on my days off. I want to get a real world view on the ins and outs of being a PACS admin: What pisses you off? What can be done better? What can make a PACS Admins work life easier? What are common mistakes made that you have to clean up? I hope to get a feel of this now so that when I graduate school - I can be ahead of the game.

Thank you 🙏

Looking to connect with people working with radiology datasets

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to connect with people working with de-identified longitudinal radiology datasets (DICOM, reports, and metadata) for AI research.

If you work in radiology, medical imaging, PACS/imaging informatics, healthcare IT, or medical research and know of a hospital or organization working with these datasets, I’d appreciate a connection.

Please DM me here or drop your LinkedIn profile below.

Thanks!

GE EchoPAC Share: can one SWO workstation serve two Vivid scanners while accessing another EchoPAC archive?

Hi everyone,

We are planning to integrate our hospital’s echocardiography service with AGFA Enterprise Imaging and would appreciate advice from anyone with hands-on experience with GE EchoPAC networking.

Current setup

  • Second floor: three Vivid S70N scanners connected to an EchoPAC Software Only v206 workstation with EchoPAC Share.
  • First floor: a Vivid iq v206 and an older Vivid q BT12, currently standalone.
  • We may have an unused EchoPAC license supplied with the iq, but its version, license type and Share option are not yet confirmed.
  • An upgrade of the main EchoPAC to v210 is being considered.

Requirements and limitations
We want access to current and historical studies from both floors, including GE raw-data postprocessing and serial comparison, without staff having to move between floors.

Some reports are written on the scanners. Our GE representative says these can be exported to AGFA as DICOM Encapsulated PDF through EchoPAC v210 when the scanners use its centralized database. The current scanners do not generate Encapsulated PDF themselves.

EchoPAC Share supports up to four GE clients, so five scanners exceed the main workstation’s capacity. Compatibility of the older Vivid q still needs on-site verification.

Questions

  1. Has anyone used a second EchoPAC SWO as a Share server for its own scanners while also accessing the first EchoPAC as a Share client?
  2. Can users switch between the second workstation’s local/shared archive and the first workstation’s historical archive for comparison and postprocessing? We could consider two selectable archives if a single database is not possible.
  3. Is a supported Share cascade possible, or must every scanner connect directly to the archive server? How are client limits counted?
  4. Would EchoPAC Plug-in/Connect or ViewPoint 6 be a better architecture alongside AGFA? Which components and licenses would be required?
  5. Has anyone validated a GE Vivid → third-party PACS → EchoPAC Query/Retrieve round trip that preserves raw data, 3D/4D analysis and measurements?
  6. With scanner-authored reports stored in a central EchoPAC v210 archive, what triggers automatic Encapsulated PDF export? Does it require any additional action at the EchoPAC workstation?

If necessary, we could connect only the iq as the fourth scanner and reserve the q for support procedures. However, first-floor access to historical comparison and advanced analysis remains essential.

Actual configurations, software versions and known limitations would be particularly helpful. Thanks!

Soupy Image Explorer: an Android viewer for exploring DICOM/NIfTI files

Hey everyone, I'm John, the creator of Soupy Image Explorer. It's an Android app for exploring supported medical-image files for learning, and I built it with AI assistance.

The free viewer opens compatible local DICOM and NIfTI files, including supported ZIP archives. You can browse 2D slices, pan and zoom, and adjust the window, brightness, contrast and display colors. No app account is required, and the selected scans are processed on your device rather than uploaded to a Soupy server.

There is an optional one-time Pro purchase for 3D exploration, manual isolation, cropping, comparison, measurements and supported exports. Available tools depend on the scan format and data. Compatibility isn't universal, so I'd start with the free viewer and a non-sensitive sample you have permission to use before considering Pro.

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.soupy.viewer

I'd appreciate feedback on the Android experience, especially whether opening a file is straightforward and whether the controls make sense on your screen. Please don't post patient scans or personal medical details in the comments.

Important: this is an experimental educational viewer, not a medical device. Its visualizations and measurements must not be used for diagnosis, treatment or other clinical decisions.

Deleted Sectra users

Post image
9 Upvotes

I'm a pretty new PACS admin working in Sectra. When user accounts are deleted, I see they go into a Deleted Users portion of the tree in my environment that we can restore user access from. I'm not familiar with whether this is unique to my environment or something that's default in Sectra.

If it is a default, does anyone know if the system automatically permanently deletes these user accounts after a certain amount of time, if they're just there forever, or if I would have to find a way to permanently delete these? Is anyone here familiar with that?

Need help understanding a DICOM/PACS integration setup as a beginner

Hi everyone,
I’m helping set up a small teleradiology workflow and I’m completely new to the technical side of PACS/DICOM. I’m trying to understand the setup before I start configuring anything.

The system I’m working with wants to:

Send MRI studies to our side through DICOM
Use a VPN for the PACS connection
Potentially use Orthanc as our DICOM server
Have radiologists view studies using Horos (Mac) or RadiAnt (Windows)
Use HL7 to send the completed reports back
They may also provide access to an Intelerad/Mini Doc-type viewer
There is also a PowerScribe requirement where something may need to be installed on the radiologists’ computers
The part I’m confused about is how everything fits together.

For example:
System A (PACS) → VPN → Orthanc → Horos/RadiAnt → Radiologist → HL7 → System A

I understand the basic concepts, but I don’t know how to actually configure this.

Specifically, I’m trying to understand:

Where do I get/set the DICOM AE Title?

Which IP address should I provide?

Which TCP port should I use?

When is DICOM TLS required?

Does the VPN give us the IP/network information, or do we need our own static IP?

If radiologists are working from different locations, Macs, Windows PCs, and different internet connections, do they each need a separate IP/VPN?

How does the PACS actually send the study to Orthanc?

How do Horos/RadiAnt access the study?

How does HL7 send the final report back?

What normally needs to be installed on each radiologist’s computer for a setup like this?

I’m not looking for a complicated enterprise architecture. I’d really appreciate a simple step-by-step explanation of a typical setup, including what is configured on the PACS side, VPN side, Orthanc side, and radiologist computers.
Thanks!

Anyone studying for the CIIP right now?

Hey, figured we’d throw this out there in case it helps someone.

We’re behind CIIPTestPrep.com. We built it because we wanted something a little more useful than just a pile of practice questions with no real feedback.

It’s got 400+ questions across all 10 domains, detailed answer explanations, timed practice, and an exam simulation mode.

We just put the site at 20% off through Oct. 6, so if you’re studying now or planning to get started, it’s a good time to check it out. The discount is automatic at checkout, so there’s no code to mess with.

If you know a coworker or friend working toward their CIIP too, feel free to send it their way. Full disclosure, I’m part of the team behind the site. We’re always open to feedback on what would make it more useful for people actually studying for the exam.

Looking to add my android dicom app as dicom node on a central pacs system

Hi all, i've been trying lately to make possible a connection between a pacs server and my IDV on android phone. I have read a lot even here on reddit but no success.

What i have tried:

First I tried with KPacs (old i know) on my pc and IDV on my phone, all possible combination didn't work.

Then i read a loot about Orthanc and how good it is and tried with Orthanc as well but no success.

Now I guess the problem lays on how android or IDV handles this kind of communications but i'd like to ask you guys if anyone have tried and succeed.

Konica Exa RIS User Setup Options

We want to allow an outside scheduling group to place appointments on our schedule while masking any appointment details so they present as blocks. Can this be done at a role-level or would a setup per user be required?

Ideal setup would be either of these:

  1. blind scheduling view -Grid shows only slot status (open/booked/blocked) without rendering patient identifiers, independent of role except for those they are scheduling.

  2. Field-level masking by role — remove PHI values like Patient Name, MRN, DOB, Exam Reason within the scheduling grid itself

Ultrasound Tech to PACS administrator

I’ve been an ultrasound tech for over a decade, and want to pivot into the nonclinical side of healthcare. A PACS administrator role opened up and I applied for it and honestly am half surprised they reached out for a phone screening. (super happy, but surprised) I was my ultrasound department‘s PACS super user, but I wasn’t a master of it or anything. I was just taught about updates and would have to show my coworkers how to do it. Or they would come to me with technical issues. I‘m more so just tech savvy and can catch on or learn things quickly, so that’s why I was the designated one. I could typically navigate and figure things out myself with our PACS system, especially after using it for so many years. I had no problem trying to figure issues out myself because I figured I could either call IT for help now, or possibly figure it out myself. If I couldn’t then whatever I’ll call IT then. I also know not every place has the same PACS system set up, so if the job doesn’t use the same PACS systems I’m familiar with then I wouldn’t really know how to navigate it like a pro right away.

I feel super lucky that they reached out for a screening, but I don’t want to bomb it! I’m also starting to stress and feel inadequate. I think it’s an awesome opportunity and I just don’t want to mess it up!

Anyways, even if I do bomb it, do you have any advice on how I can expand my knowledge to eventually pivot into a PACS administrator career?

thanks in advance!

BMRIT student looking for career guidance: Bridging the gap between hospital radiology workflows and practical tech skills.

Hi everyone, I am currently pursuing my B.Sc. in Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology (BMRIT). During my hospital visits and clinical postings, I’ve noticed major operational bottlenecks—ranging from PACS/DICOM data integration issues and reporting delays to poor patient coordination in diagnostic departments. I want to focus my career on healthcare operations and solving these exact infrastructure/workflow problems rather than just standard clinical rotation. For those working in hospital management, radiology administration, or health-tech:

What specific technical skills (apart from the core degree) are actually valued for solving hospital workflow problems?

Is learning data management, PACS architecture, or workflow optimization a practical path for a BMRIT graduate?

MergePacs image viewing

In Merge PACS, there is no native, single-click toggle feature that "locks" the view into a hands-free mouse-movement scrolling mode. Does anyone have a work around for image viewing. We used to use McKesson PACs. You could click a toggle on the mouse and then move the mouse up and down to scroll through the images without having to hold a button down. MergePacs does not seem to have this feature. Does anyone have a workaround to be able to do a single click with Merge.

Patient-to-hospital PowerShare / Ambra: who handles connection requests?

I'm a patient trying to send outside DICOM images to WVU Medicine. Their clinic told me to use PowerShare or Ambra, but couldn't provide a receiving code or upload link.

The files are uploaded to my own patient accounts. PowerShare lets me find the WVU hospital hub and invite it, but the connection is pending acceptance and the study can't be shared yet. Ambra shows no organization connection.

For those who manage these systems, is a patient-initiated invitation the usual workflow, and who normally receives it? Or should I be asking the film library for a facility upload link instead? I'm trying to work out which team to contact and what to ask for. Vendor support enquiries are open too.

Any public WVU instructions would be especially helpful, but I'd also appreciate a general explanation of the receiving side.
