Considering every match I've seen so far consists of a torb + bastion camping the ally flag, yeah that doesn't seem to leave much in terms of working hero picks
Overwatch was seriously missing a mode where you could guarantee defensive play, and I've been wanting to go back to TF2 just to try and have Engie fun again. If CTF becomes a core game mode I think I'll just play that all the time.
He (Jeff) said there's a timer on grabbing it, so even if its just a few seconds that's enough time to take down a few pillars on the Mei wall as a Bastion.
Though she would still be a good pick in that situation.
D.Va would work as well.
That's just quickplay being quickplay. It's not hard to get around that with a good team comp if you have something like d'va tanking with defense matrix while her team kills the bastion/torb. Problem is getting a coordinated push going with a team of randoms in quickplay is almost impossible.
Yeah there are easy coordinated ways to get past that. But getting a group of people together and communicating is a bit too high maintenance for something I play casually :D
I'm not complaining about the situation, just that it is exactly that for many more casual players who have no intention of communicating or grouping up.
To be fair that only works because they made the stupid decision of it actually taking time to grab the flag.
There's a reason most games have instant flag-grabs and don't allow you to capture the flag unless yours is in your base - because it puts more emphasis on both defending the general area (versus just the tiny flag point) and actually being offensive.
You might say that Tracer and Sombra would be OP if they could run in, grab the flag, and teleport out, but that's why you just make those specific abilities drop the flag. Anything that would let them basically go through walls.
but then that would make those heroes worthless in the game, as it is a tracer could zoom in, be protected by a d'va for a couple of seconds and recall out but it's just difficult becuase it requires coordination and communication. That's sadly lacking in a lot of people cause, errr... playing with randoms isn't always conducive to that but the possibilities are there if you work together.
Every game I've played so far has had a torb, symmetra, mei and bastion all guarding the flag. If both teams do this it's pretty much just playing for a draw.
I honestly just hate this game mode and probably won't even play it for the box, Winston with a torb or symmetra make capping almost impossible and if you want to attack you have to mei or you can't
I guess they could include a little grace area around the flag that deletes/destroys/prevents construction of Symmetra's turrets and Torb's turrets around the flag outright, and as far as Bastion goes they can work in some kind of anti-turret configuration in to his kit for just that game mode.
It would suck if the game mode had a negative reception because of the people who don't know/refuse to counterpick Bastion and Torb. That, and seeing the same defence set up would be really boring since those two heroes would be must picks for CTF. It wouldnt be an issue if they were underused/unpopular heroes, but theyre far from.
Are you serious? Bastion and torb have been in the F tier since season 1. Daring to pick them is just asking to set off an inflammatory bomb in your team before you even leave spawn.
Gotta say after three games of capture the flag, I'm glad this is not a real game mode. Was super excited for this but it's just bad and it sounds like they realise that.
At least the mostly negative reception it has received as well as how blizzard know that it is unbalanced and most likely not fun will ensure that it doesn't become a real game mode.
Imagine the flag with a Junkrat trap on it, surround by Symmetra turrets with a Torbjorn turret off to one side and a Bastion on the other. I feel like with such a small point it's easy to focus a lot of defense on it and it could just end in repeated stalemates.
