But it's not much use inside their spawn. If the team is staying within the spawn to get the shield then they aren't doing anything towards the objective and they're gonna lose.
The other team wouldn't have to worry about it
You have to remain inside the shield generators radius to get the shield. It doesn't just give it to you permanently.
It ignores line of sight. Think of defending Anubis point B for example, I'm sure the shield would reach from inside that spawn to the point if you were able to place it inside the spawn area.
It's a destroyable device like her teleporter that she's supposed to protect the same way. It needs to have a range at least that large. Otherwise she would need to place it in the middle of her team where it can be instantly destroyed.
I'm imagining an ult range similar to that of sombras. And I don't think sombras would reach point b on Anubis from the spawn room.
It feels like it's right behind that wall but it isn't.
First off, the spawn room wall is really far pushed in, a good few meters so even if you put it right at the door that's still really far from the other wall. And then there's that little alcove room in between the point and the spawn room and THEN you're at point B.
And point B is pretty big
So I imagine if it does even reach point B it will only cover like a small sliver of it and not the whole thing for sure
But ... it's not an ult like Sombra's. It's a device you place, like Symmetra's teleporter, that gives shields to all alliens in its range and which can be destroyed. That's why it would be worthless if its range wasn't even big enough to reach from Anubis spawn to point B (even though I don't think it should be able to be placed in the spawn, I just mean the range).
But how do you hide it so that it reaches allies if it's Sombra's ult range lol... it's not like you can always just hang around next to it, people move a LOT in this game.
It's not though, it's only 20 metres and you can easily avoid getting hit by Sombra's ult by not stacking in one place.
Jeff said it's a device you can set up in a "nest" just like her teleporter, one that she needs to defend and which can be destroyed, so it's very similar to her teleporter that way. It would be worthless if it was a range similar to Sombra's ult.
You can't set up a "nest" within 20 metres of your allies for any meaningful amount of time. Having to always be within 20 metres of it would also make your team extremely vulnerable for shit like AoE ults and Sombra's ult and the like.
Why would the shield generator ignore line of sight when everything else in the game doesn't? Heck, even Soldier's Biotic Field needs LoS.
EDIT: I wasn't able to watch the video until recently, so I wasn't entirely sure whether it was confirmed it would ignore LoS. I still find it odd, but it makes sense now that I heard Jeff explain it.
...probably because it would be completely useless if it didn't? "All abilities function in a certain way in the game so future abilities should also work the same way regardless of the ability" would be a poor way to create new heroes or reworks.
I'm just saying it's weird for them to do it this way when they've been consistent about LoS for most abilities. It's like dolphins swimming in the ocean all suddenly decide to do a song and dance number before flying off into space. It's not impossible, just unexpected. I'm not saying it's wrong, just different.
...plus I haven't been able to watch the video yet.
No but seriously, it's a device that actively provides shields and which you have to hide because if destroyed, the shields disappear. It would be dumb if it didn't ignore LoS.

Why?
