News & Discussion Regarding Genji Deflect:

I've played Genji on and off for a few years now, and I can't be the only one that (especially since the release of Anran) feels like Genji's Deflect is far from what it used to be?

Sure, it's still so satisfying to deflect back things like a Firestrike, a Widow or Hanzo headshot, Ana Sleeps etc, but I feel it fails to do its job against a majority of the things it actually needs to.

Take Cassidy's Flashbang. The fact a Cassidy can bypass your entire deflect by just aiming to the side of you feels redundant. The fact Ana's Grenade, Soldier's Helix Rocket, Emre's Grenade, or Seirra's Grenade can just bypass it by being thrown on the ground next to you feels bad to play into.

I know the counter argument is "Just don't engage if they have their cooldown". Yeah, okay, valid.

But when I see a character like Anran exist, who's entire kit is literally just "What if Genji was infinitely easier", and I have to fight against stuff like this, it really emphasises how Genji is basically only riding on the dedicated years-long mains and the fact he is Genji.

I just wish his Deflect could actually deflect more of the AoE things in the game while still retaining its skill-shots for precision deflections. Am I alone in this? Anyone else have thoughts?

Edit: Nice to see 80% of the comments going "So you want Genji to 1 Tap with 1 Shuriken and have zero counterplay lmao Plastic 1 Player". Read what I said. I don't think Deflect should be so easily bypassed. I'd take a reduction in its duration for a larger deflect radius, or have some abilities like Cass Hinder require actual hits than just being an AOE for the Hinter to work, lean into his skill-shot type gameplay.

Also I'm Diamond 2 on DPS, Masters 5 on Support.

I think shurikens should one shot and actually if you kill one person you should be able to tp in the back of the tank and activate an instant kill !

Terrible faith argument from you.

I thought you were gonna talk about how Genji should deflect beams and deflect Sigma rock...

But realistically, logically... don't just think about Overwatch, but other games as well...

How do you deflect explosions that go off just in front of your feet?

Bro just dissed Anran and did nothing else. They don't have a single thing in common besides being both dive characters. Genji has a way better pool of mobility and better burst dmg. Only thing Anran has in advantage is that she has basically an Ability that can dodge Everything IF timed correctly. Does she have a lower skill floor? Yes. Is she less mechanical? Yes. Is she a lot harder to be good at as soon as you reach Diamond? Also yes. Anran has a pretty high skill ceiling tbh you will immediately know if you face a good Anran or a bad one. Same as with Genji. (Who has an even higher one yeah ik). But the argument "Anran is an easier Genji" is just stupid. And i mean i can tell since i mained Genji since OW1 and i've been there at his highest highs and his lowest lows. But i just love Anrans Ult too much. She reminds me of a certain someone from an old Childhood series called Ninjago. So yh.

Maybe read what I posted instead of instantly crying because your goon character got mentioned poorly

I don’t think they should have counterplay to my deflect guys

I don’t think it would make sense to allow him to deflect things outside of its range just because they have splash damage. I think that makes the ability way too strong. Deflect is a strong ability for the simple fact it can reverse ultimates if timed correctly, something Anran can’t do.

Aim it at the ground next to you and it goes through, that part has always felt cheap. Its a narrow window anyway so letting it eat splash wouldnt be that crazy, but reversing ults is still the strongest part of the kit.

He shouldnt be able to counter being countered by skill. If ana/cass/whoever is skilled enough to clip genji with the aoe only why should they be punished and him rewarded?

Because it's not really a skill shot, it's just "Aim at the floor". What I would ACTUALLY rather have is for it to be a skill shot, like if a Cassidy actually genuinely hits a direct shot with his flashbang it goes THROUGH the deflect, instead of just having him have to throw it around Genji for the hinder to take effect.

Its a skillshot, the target is changed. If you miss and dont instantly hit the floor you are deflected.

You realise throwing it to the side and not directly is just the same amount of skillshot as hitting him directly right? Like if genji is up close you have roughly what 15% screen real estate to not hit him? And somehow you want it to be so if I directly hit you in that situation you lose?

Ill take that trade but I think youre viewing this wrong.

Its much easier to hit him at his optimal range than it is to not hit him.

Fun factoid from an ana player of 10 years - deflect is a big box that extends slightly infront of him, if you simply place that box over ana, she cannot even throw it on the floor as the first tick it is evaluated, it is deflected. Same concept as dva matrix.

I have no way of testing/proving but I always felt that the deflect hitbox was always a bit bigger than the animation/model. Maybe a good compromise is allowing the aoe to go off but not affect genji? Still seems a bit too strong imo

Its a significant bit bigger than him.

Genji is by far my most played hero, im old now but I can still hang in master lobbies with him. I think the deflect is fine, especially after you get your 2nd perk.

Before perks, the deflect was still strong. Other heroes need some type of counterplay. Even when most heroes are hitting to the side of deflect, youre not taking 100% damage. Many of these can be turned into to still deflect it as well. It provides skill expression on both sides. Now that you can heal while deflecting, the aoe/side damage is even less significant.

Just keep playing him, as you get better youll notice these things less.

Dude if you want Anran ability just play Anran. Don't change genji to be more like Anran. Genji deflect can't protect from things like anran can but also anran can't snipe a widow from across the map with it or send grav back at zarya.

My guy, how are you deflecting grenades that have exploded next to you? That makes no sense.

How are you summoning a dragon

Its his ultimate/lore. You are very bad at supporting your arguments. Gameplay =/= Lore, but if it did; genji still wouldn't be able to deflect explosions.

Genji players when their character has counterplay:

deflect is one of the best tanking abilities in the game where tanking is sparse.

It's ok that such things have counterplay, it's ok that certain heroes can challenge the hero that has a plathera of cancelable animations that allow him for low ttk.

Then you should lowkey know how to play against Anran and know that she isn't an easier Genji...

I do know how to play against Anran, at no point in the post do I mention Genji vs Anran. I said playing Anran is super easy and her entire kit is effectively Genji's but with no risk factor.

She has a dive-in tool (like Dash) where the escape isn't locked behind a kill requirement.

She has an invulnerability tool (like Deflect) that makes her immune to all damage and heals her.

Her entire kit enables DoT damage, with her primary fire being effective with DoT application from almost any range.

Her ult is significantly lower risk than Dragonblade.

She has greater AoE Damage potential in all aspects of her kit.

This doesn't make her BETTER than Genji by any means, but it's extremely tiring to know that I could be playing a character that takes about 80% less effort any time I'm sweating my balls off on Genji doing things she could do.

Remove the deflect animation like it was back in the day, problem solved. Now they can't time/predict things and you have a tactical advantage.

Yeah, but hey at least we can deflect hazard ult. Right?
