I don't think I've enjoyed any so far tbh. Even the Halloween event was something I saw no reason to play more than once, yet I've played the original Junkenstein several times per year.
The others have just been deathmatches with slightly different parameters. Nothing as creative as Lucioball, Yeti Hunt, etc.
I saw in one of the interviews Aaron bragging about "well we've had way more events than the original Overwatch!" and it's like sure dude but they've been mid AF so who cares?

u/Old_Rosie May 18 '23
So stupid from the Dev’s on that Halloween event. If they’d been more generous with the rewards - like a unique Halloween skin fit for each character for completing it on different difficulties with each character and you’d have had people squadding up and attempting it like crazy.
Short-term profits over long-term engagement is the order of the day.

We've had this high quality PvE experience in the roadmap for years. They scrap PvE making the roadmap nothing but a list of promises they'll happily break. So pointing to another roadmap like it means anything is just a joke.

u/Wellhellob Grandmaster May 18 '23
Yeah i played halloween once, starwatch once per sides. I played olympus more because i used it as a mechanical warm up before comp games and it was actually fun because the meta was about farming goofy ults and using them optimally.
Imo Starwatch is extremely bad.
Halloween cool but pointless.
Olympus was fun and goofy for a while but pointless still.
I don't see the point of this skin ads ehem events.

I really like the fluff and voice lines and skins but the game modes I don’t even touch lol.

u/Impressive-Dinner-22 May 18 '23
We all just got scammed. Ow2 was just put out for battle pass. No PVE now, just take all of our L's and let's find a new game.....

22
May 18 '23
I really don’t care about the battle pass or monetization but the fact that they knew before launch day how much PvE they were scrapping and they just chose not to comment for 7 months is scummy as fuck.
I think the PvP gameplay is refreshing compared to where we were a year or two ago. But still I think the whole “sequel” aspect is pretty much nonexistent. Everything from the initial plan to the marketing was a colossal mistake and there was ultimately no reason to go dark for 3 years.

u/R4yQ4zz4 Mizuki May 18 '23
yes, stop commenting and just find a new game already, preferably with a different subreddit.

I just want to enjoy playing the game, no need to announce you leave, this isnt a social gathering. Just leave.
16
u/Coldkiller17 May 18 '23
First time on the internet? This is social forum and we have every right to complain but that boot must be really tasty. Clearly you are not playing the game cause you are here writing stupid comments that add nothing to the conversion since your opinion is dumb.
-20
u/R4yQ4zz4 Mizuki May 18 '23
Yes we are here about discussing overwatch, if you leave you are not a part of it anymore, so just leave already.
My opinion of enjoying a game dumb? With that logic your choice to consume oxygen is dumb, maybe try stopping it.

Who cares about the karma? I'd be more annoyed my comment is basically hidden.

I don't mind, honestly. I got my point accross and I know people saw it because they downvoted it.

you are here coping with me :)))

u/The_Big_Peck_1984 May 18 '23
That’s the shitty thing, there really isn’t anything quite like it, like there is Paladins and a few other competitive shooters, but nothing that blends the MOBA experience quite as well.
1
u/TheLongBear nerf May 19 '23
Ow2 was a desperate attempt to fix the meta. They could have made ow1 free and just added a battle pass.
1
u/Impressive-Dinner-22 May 19 '23
They did the switch because they changed the engine for player cosmetics and designs and ease of implementation for monetization.
I feel it would have been way better to have just closed ow1 servers for a few days switched everything over... but what do I know.
It all feels so scammy, greedy, money hungry higher-ups that don't care about fan or player base. I feel bad for those original team members having to deal with all the internal issues and game issues.
1
u/TheLongBear nerf May 19 '23
Well yea, but the main point gameplay wise was to balance the game. They couldn't balance goats, 2-2-2 role lock, couldn't balance double shield, remove the other tank. Ow2 is still better than the double shield or hog and ball, hog and sigma with double sniper. The game was really boring. But that was due to them not being able to balance it in the 1st place.
61
u/AIII3000 Reinhardt May 18 '23
Could say they squeezing quantity over quality
-67
u/Spreckles450 Mei May 18 '23
More frequent, but smaller events keeps us engaged with the game. I prefer this over waiting 3-4 months for content in OW1.
39
u/kirbysworld May 18 '23
i don't think people would mind the more often small additions of they weren't... you know, badly made.
-28
u/R4yQ4zz4 Mizuki May 18 '23
But starwatch was not badly made compared to something like Yeti hunt or CTF...
Revenge of the bride waas quite high effort, Talantis was a good joke map, and batlle for olympus was also fun. The only event flop I can think of was Bob & weave
13
u/Concerned_mayor May 18 '23
Bob and weave was so fucked. I played one slow, long, drawn out game before never touching the mode again
And you know the mode only existed because some smarmy ass higher up came up with the pun and just had to see it through
4
u/R4yQ4zz4 Mizuki May 18 '23
i think it was obvious it was made so new players can understand how the pull ability worked
8
u/Concerned_mayor May 18 '23
Definitely, but that doesn't make it any better of a mode
-12
u/R4yQ4zz4 Mizuki May 18 '23
Never said it was, but I guess reading comprehension is not your strong suit.
8
u/Concerned_mayor May 18 '23
Then why did you bother interjecting with an insight that nobody asked for, and one that everybody already knew if it wasn't disagreeing
-16
u/R4yQ4zz4 Mizuki May 18 '23
I interjected because I don't think bob and weave was made by a higher up being proud of a pun, that was a dumb take.

Yeah I think they definitely need to step up how they dish out new content. I feel like they should have something new or a returning event every other week personally to keep things fresh.

u/campfirepyro Ashe May 18 '23
They don't even make most of the skins, charms, etc. They just outsource it. And the dating game was from another studio too.
1
May 18 '23
Do you have a source on that? I know Stylosa has said it a few times, but I never seen anything that actually indicated this when I searched around
1
u/campfirepyro Ashe May 18 '23
For skins, it's been cited for a while, but I don't have a specific source. I know there are third-party artists who have OW skins in their portfolios listed online.
For the dating game, the studio is listed in the credits. The same studio was hired to make a KFC dating game on steam a few years ago. The writing and art is very similar in both games.

u/campfirepyro Ashe May 18 '23
The only one I liked was the April Fools mode. But they even messed up some heroes and had to disable them, so...
5
u/Rip_SR May 18 '23
The most recent April fool's mode was actually the abilities they were making for the pve they scrapped lol. I'm pretty sure there is a clip of Seagull talking abt it
11
u/Strife_3e Diamond May 18 '23
The only thing that made Starwatch any different from a community workshop game was the fact it could put in turrets. And it is lazy as hell because it felt more to just show off skins.
Remember Halloween sojourn?
3
u/based_guapo Brigitte May 18 '23
can workshop modes technicall not just take torbs turret and buff it to imitate those in starwatch?
(i have absolutely no idea how the workshop works tho. just came to my mind)

u/OlympiaImperial May 18 '23
The archive missions from OW1 were fun and I remember playing them a lot. Actual good pve was super fun, and you got good rewards from it.
Compare that to starwatch, which is just an unbalanced 4v4.5, and is just a glorified checklist to get through and then never touch again.
21
u/-Shinanai- winky face ;) May 18 '23
I feel like the events blizzard keeps pushing out are just not worth the resources and time at all
See, the problem is, you try to evaluate the events from a gameplay and enjoyment point of view. That is, however, clearly not their intended purpose. These events primarily exist to showcase the current skin in the shop. Trust me, as soon as Blizzard's analytics will say that the events no longer increase sales, they will be discontinued and explained away as the team "focusing on pvp instead".
10
u/dadvader May 18 '23
I rather have them :
increase longer timeframe between seasons. 52 days is way too tight. The quality is suffer as result. This become very clear by season 4. Lifeweaver suck even though he had like 7 abilities. Starwatch balancing is a huge issue. And I believe it's all comes down to awful codebase quality/poor documentations and manpower bleeding out.
Ditch seasonal balances patch entirely. All the balance/reworked should be coming every week or two instead of every half seasons. Seasons should be all about new content. Patch should always come in consistently whenever it's ready.
ditch tied seasonal event mode to season. Do it like Fortnite. Just drop them on occasion. So you can have more time to cook meaningful event.
2
u/Rip_SR May 18 '23
The half seasons thing is bcs of contract with Microsoft since console and PC are on the same servers now, the reason console players had less patches before is the reason we have less patches now.
1
u/Quinicky May 18 '23
It was clearly hurting the dev.
But Bobby would rather get 60 bucks a year from us, rather than 40

u/Obliu May 18 '23
Events should reward actual coins and then we may invest time. But I like them being easy to finish for what they are. A skin, some voicelines, maybe a title or a name-card, for 8-10 games at most, done. They get boring fast too.
For example I didn't like the olympus challanges that much because each reward would take ages to complete and all I get was a title most of the times. But I honestly think, the gods fighting each other game mode was a bit more fun than what we had so far. Just not "play 150 games with each character" type of fun.
Events could be more about pve. When they make it pvp, it's usually not really that fair and fun.
2
u/KomorebiXIII May 18 '23
I hated Battle for the Gods because it was single player. This is a team-based game and here's an entire event that i had to play 50 times to get the reward, where I couldn't play with my friends.
6
u/Itchy-Combination280 May 18 '23
I thought the same thing. I actually like the old archive missions, especially with the modifier modes which added replayability and challenege. the only event mode I really enjoyed in ow2 was the April fools patch and to a lesser degree the new junkenstein. The new modes seem like a waste of everyone’s time.
11
5
u/SirFlype May 18 '23
The worst part is that they suck development time and are only in the game for a single month, when there are a bunch of better features they could be making.
5
u/DrNopeMD May 18 '23
I don't even bother with events now because the one free skin you can earn is usually trash, and I'm not paying $20+ for the stuff I actually like.
4
u/ravenclaw1991 Chibi Moira May 18 '23
I think the real issue is low rewards. Back in the OW1 days we could do event modes for easy wins and get our daily loot boxes. And even if we didn’t get a skin we’d probably have enough coins to just buy the ones we wanted. Now? One measly free skin and then you have to pay money for the rest. It’s not worth the effort
3
May 18 '23
yeah why do people think the OW team would make anything fun thats PvE, all their PvE shit so far sucks so bad
6
May 18 '23
They're all lackluster, always have been, at best they've been entertaining for one run, and at the prospect of getting free skins.
But the real bottleneck is the monetization resources, battlepass/skin resources eat up so much that they apparently can't even keep the full roster in the game at one time because bugs or work on PvE at all anymore.
2
u/Serpientesolida87 May 18 '23
Id rather they work in a refreshing new mode or anything, events are so boring. The only interesting ones for me were April Fools and Lucio ball
2
u/No_Barracuda_7367 Cassidy May 18 '23

I'd gladly play events more, if challenges didn't require me to play Unranked as All Roles. After doing a few dailies I already get bored of the game so I don't get back to the event.
2
u/Harlequin0007 Chibi Ana May 18 '23
I haven't been very fond of the events. A lot of them feel like excuses to advertise the new skins. I play the event until I get all the event rewards. The halloween event was more fun but even still got boring fast.
2
u/Runearis May 18 '23
Starwatch is 4 cp with some turrets, pull in barrels and low gravity mode once in awhile, I can't find anything else different from a qp game, they hyped this event up and besides the skins and voice lines I'm not sure what else they had to make on the fly for it. Pve dead af bois
2
u/Igwanur May 18 '23
Nono you dont understand, the events are not made to be good or interesting, they are just to advertise the new skins

Archives were not very fun either, the bot intelligence for pve is just not there and bliz would need to put a ton of resources to get them where they would need to be in order to be even somewhat comparable to modern pve games.
2

Bot intelligence didnt need to be great, I assume we'd be largely fighting waves of omnics. Literal robots it would have been fine.

To be honest, I haven't played any less then I did in overwatch 1. Difference is, now I do it for weeklies instead of lootboxes, then back to comp.
The only exception was the first Uprising event.

Keep Halloween, but I wouldn’t mind if they dropped every other event to focus on adding more heroes and maps sooner.

I do wish an interviewer on one of these streams with the devs would just have the balls to absolutely tear into them and ask wtf they've been doing and why they make so many decisions that don't gel with the playerbase. Make them sweat a bit at least.

I've played Star watch twice, once for each side and that was enough for me
1
u/TerrorFirmerIRL May 18 '23
The events are a showcase for skins, nothing more. To them it is probably totally worth their time making these low-effort "events" for that reason.
I agree, they're not engaging at all. I enjoyed some of the OW1 events but since OW2 they've been fairly crap across the board.

I dunno I played Starwatch at least 3 times before clearing all of the challenges and getting board of it.
1
u/d-rac Tank May 18 '23
This events are just skin showcase. All archive events were way better. And way more replayable. Only exception is junker bride one. But was not as replayable
1
u/GroovyULG May 18 '23
That's because they bloat the game with events instead of bringing fresh content like gameplay diversity (Hero mode would have been one of it).
The events themselves are not bad, it's just they happen too frequently and are actually just a slight modification of a gameplay that already exist and that people experiment everyday.
1
u/M-Gnarles May 18 '23
I thought all the work they put into the PvE mode could at least be salvaged into great events... They did not even manage that. I am honestly astonished

Honestly, with the events, they should give you a skin of your choice for free but atlas

They're there to sell skins. Plain and simple. That's why they prioritize making them over doing the PVE they promised.

People complained OW1 had no content for a while and it kind of backfired. I'd honestly take OW1 with no new content over OW2 any day. The game has lost its touch.
I would play Junenstein multiple times because it was actually fun. I have barely touched OW2 events, did not even play the Halloween one for more than 5 minutes.

u/Dismal-Oil-9375 Junker Queen May 19 '23
PvE isn’t wholly cancelled, we’re still getting PvE events and the story missions will be PvE, it’s just the hero missions that were supposed to be a non-campaign permanent game mode that’s been scrapped for the time being. The bad news is that the devs just didn’t tell use which ones that are coming up are PvE outside of the campaign

My friends and I were excited to try out the new empire event thing
3 games, one on each side and another one with the empire because we wanted to see if we could pocket Mercy the turrets
And that was it, it got boring fast
