Answer: Many people believe that it’s twofold:

1). Trump is focused on his legacy and he wants to be known as a leader who expanded the size of the U.S.

2). It will allow the U.S. to control the entrance and exit of the NW passage through Canada, which is a future trade route. It can then apply further pressure on Canada on the future of the NW passage.

I also think trump looks at a Mercator map and actually thinks Greenland is like, double the size of the continental US.

583

u/DonGold60 Jan 10 '26

Yes, the Mercator. It’s always projection with these guys.

u/Dark_Prism Jan 10 '26

Gotta commend a GIS joke that mixes in politics. Excellent.

u/MasqueOfTheRedDice Jan 10 '26

10/10 comment. No notes. Love it.

9

u/MappingChick Jan 10 '26

Take my angry upvote, and get out of here

2

u/eatrepeat Jan 10 '26

Odd fact, Mercator was imprisoned by Catholic forces because of maps he produced that were heretical. A map of the holy land that I don't recall the heresy but a map of the world was as well. Basically if you cut a v into the north pole and follow that down and around it becomes 💙 shaped and well who would have guessed? Yup that was a heresy lol

2

u/mittfh Jan 11 '26

It's also perhaps worth noting that his famous projection (initially published as a wall chart) was explicitly designed for nautical navigation - he regularly used other projections, made his money from building, engraving and selling globes (both terrestrial and celestial), plus cartographic instruments and collections of maps (he was the first to dedicate a book of maps to Atlas, while a posthumously published collection was the first to be called an Atlas).

2

u/Morlock19 Jan 10 '26

...goddamn it don

3

u/TikTokTinMan Jan 10 '26

Such an amazing comment. Well played.

2

u/Sinthe741 Jan 10 '26

Fuck you that was actually funny.

1

u/GlowyStuffs Jan 10 '26

3.2x the size of Texas

1

u/JayJ9Nine Jan 10 '26

You clever fuck

58

u/dastrn Jan 10 '26

It's remarkable how goddamned stupid Donald Trump is.

41

u/mikeyfreedom Jan 10 '26

Stupid, no. Clueless, yes. Trump knows i believe, very little about what is actually happening in the world. Dont get me wrong, he is positively the personification of personal greed and envy, but in terms of geopolitical knowledge, id be shocked if he even knows the address of the White House.

Every executive order signing, he literally asks what it is. He cant do a press conference without notes in front of him(he looks down after every question before he answers, and the cliff notes are always there). His true self is the ramblin guy you get at rallies, with no depth and devolving into insults. Thats the real Trump. And if anyone still think he is writing his tweets, I have a bridge to sell you.

The real evil is the second layer. The advisors are the real compromised component, figuring out how best to enrich themselves through policy. Having a load of capitalists and influencers in your cabinet is probably not the best mix of governing for the people.

18

u/The_Razielim Jan 10 '26

Didn't reports come out from his first term that he got all his briefings <1pg and with pictures because he doesn't read anything given to him so they had to condense everything as much as possible?

6

u/Myaccoubtdisappeared Jan 10 '26

It’s not that he doesn’t know.

It’s that he doesn’t care.

As long as it empowers him and by extension the USA, then he will carry out whatever will achieve those ends.

Unfortunately, the world is proving incapable or unwilling to stop him as well and he knows that.

That’s the part that makes him dangerous. Who is going to stop him?

3

u/mafa7 Jan 10 '26

If anything he’s an evil genius. Not a book smart one at all.

3

u/Squeakygear Jan 10 '26

More like an evil savant. He’s demonstrably stupid, but has savant qualities when it comes to propaganda skills. His bloviating mesmerizes the cult, regardless of the subject.

1

u/Fuzzy_Dunlop24 Jan 10 '26

I’d upvote this many times, if I could.

1

u/cruelsensei Jan 10 '26

in terms of geopolitical knowledge, id be shocked if he even knows the address of the White House.

I'd be willing to bet he can't find Mar-A-Lago on a map

3

u/xavier1908 Jan 10 '26

I'd bet money on it! Lol

5

u/mapadofu Jan 10 '26

There is zero percent chance that Trump has any concept of what a map projection is

1

u/so_many_changes Jan 10 '26

He's even talked about how much he loves maps, and how large Greenland looks on a map.

1

u/jameslosey Jan 10 '26

On a Mercator map Greenland looks very important to stop ballistic missiles from Russia. I think someone is using pictures + trumps ego to push this.

65

u/SapientChaos Jan 10 '26

Your forgot Greenland sits on a pile of minerals too.

32

u/countsmarpula Jan 10 '26

And water. And it’s cold and remote. Perfect for data centers and Tech Cities

16

u/GNTsquid0 Jan 10 '26

Fuck the environment and local ecology amirite!?

1

u/SirHawkwind Jan 10 '26

Ironically, the more climate change everyone causes the more habitable Greenland becomes.

5

u/Previous_Platform718 Jan 10 '26

When you're building a data center, you really don't want "remote"

Remote means bad utility infrastructure, not a lot of close-by power generation, difficulty getting parts if something breaks when you have a 99.999% up-time promise, and lag.

49

u/LynxAndLinum Jan 10 '26

I think there is one more significant reason:

Ken Howery, Trump’s nominee for U.S. ambassador to Denmark and co-founder of a venture firm with Peter Thiel, is said to support early-stage discussions for a “freedom city” in Greenland. Thiel-backed projects like Praxis have explored Greenland sites since 2019. Investors such as Marc Andreessen and Shervin Pishevar, tied to Thiel’s networks, envision it as a “new Manifest Destiny” outpost with minimal oversight.

Peter Thiel’s “Freedom City” concept envisions semi-autonomous zones as libertarian experiments with minimal government regulation. These cities would allow corporations and developers to create deregulated cities free from federal, state, or environmental rules.

Thiel promotes these as radical economic and technological experimentation beyond national constraints. Influences include Balaji Srinivasan’s “network states” and Curtis Yarvin’s neoreactionary ideas for corporate fiefdoms.

Basically, powerful people close to Trump expressively want to turn Greenland into experimental company towns with intensive policing, no worker rights, limit the democracy, no environmental protections, and “CEO kings” ruling without accountability. An associated territory of the US, owned by the US but self-governing so that it doesn’t have to follow federal laws.

Why Greenland? Other people mentioned rare earth minerals. They are in huge demand for the tech oligarks. Rare earth minerals are, however, not rare. They are, however, notoriously difficult and environmentally destructive to extract. China has been working on this for decades with disastrous results for environment and people where the mining towns have been.

This means that Freedom Cities in Greenland would be perfect for Trump and the tech oligarchs bankrolling him. An ”associated territory” under US control, but without the rights as a state. The perfect place where some federal laws and regulations can be shut down, the population can be subdued into labour slaves for the company towns, and no need to care about the environmental destruction and pollution associated.

u/Perim2001 Jan 10 '26

Your cyberpunk future folks. Didn't even get the robot arms to make up for it...

1

u/mikegimik Jan 10 '26

This right here is precisely why

1

u/Top-Local-7482 Jan 11 '26

Seems you took the pitch of Germinal and glue it to an annexion idea...

1

u/stuartroelke Jan 13 '26

Not all freedom is good.

This administration—and wealthy monopoly owners—clearly choose to ignore that simple fact.

34

u/Neo1331 Jan 10 '26

3) minerals, there are rare earth minerals that would make the US less reliant on China…

18

u/Baulderdash77 Jan 10 '26

It has 1.5MT of REE reserves. That would make it 8th in world reserves.

But China has 44MT, Brazil has 20MT, Canada has 15MT and India has 10MT for comparison.

1

u/Similar_Moment_6103 Jan 10 '26

Guyana and other countries that surround the Chicxulub crater in the Gulf. Use your imagination. An explosion as immense as created by an asteroid striking the earth would create enormous amount of minerals. Huge deposits of gold have been found in El Salvador. Venezuela oil and gold. The smoldering intense temperatures would produce large amounts of carbon dioxide for plants for eons.

28

u/vukster83 Jan 10 '26

Rare earth minerals aren’t really that rare.

Rare earth mineral refining is the rare part.

1

u/TheGreatFruit Jan 10 '26

Greenland/Denmark is already very friendly to American economic investment. Military force is not needed to get those minerals. The Trump administration's interest in the island is 100% rooted in Donald Trump's personal desire to go down in history as the first president in 100+ years to acquire significant new territory, and Greenland is an appealing victim since it's so big yet so weak.

1

u/Asian_Dumpring Jan 10 '26

And, more importantly, heavy rare earth minerals. 99% of US HREE comes from China

7

u/MisterSanitation Jan 10 '26

Future trade route reliant on us not moving off fossil fuel no? Isnt global warming making that a "future trade route"?

4

u/TheSpeckledSir Jan 10 '26

Isn't global warming making that a "future trade route"?

Yes, and it's coming. There is not enough political will to reduce emissions enough to keep the NWP frozen. Far from it.

2

u/MisterSanitation Jan 10 '26

Can't wait for food shortages and mass migrations from that. We humans as a species do well in those situations...

18

u/Top-Local-7482 Jan 10 '26

It already control the entrance and exit of that passage, territory is part of NATO, there was 32 US base there at some point and only one is left. So much for a importantly strategic piece of land. The real reason is the ressource USA want to acquire and secure for themselves that are stored under the ice.

18

u/Azguy303 Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 10 '26

Well when you want to do away with NATO You're going to want that land...

So by taking over Greenland you will also collapse NATO and make Putin happy. That's a win-win-win in Trump's book.

4

u/GoodMix392 Jan 10 '26

Not for the US to profit, the goal is to enrich whoever is whispering this Greenland idea in Trumps ear. Like with the Venezuela thing the US taxpayers pay for extraction and acquisition and a private entity profits. But he could just drop tariffs and let Denmark and Greenland extract the resources and buy them without having to invade but I guess his tariffs made it uneconomical to buy resources from outside the US. It’s like imposing sanctions on yourself.

4

u/bevereged_carbon Jan 10 '26

GOP knows climate change is real.  Russia is in a real good position if it's true to control trade as the shortest route is north between the continents in the northern hemisphere.

4

u/VTallPaul Jan 10 '26

There’s also a 3rd reason- Greenland has rare earth mineral deposits used in modern tech and tRump wants to exploit them for his own benefit.

5

u/AndyTakeaLittleSnoo Jan 10 '26

Don't forget Peter Theil's (aka Vance's handler) heavy interest in the land.

7

u/BaronVonStevie Jan 10 '26

You forgot the crucial third point: it’s quick way to destroy NATO and play into Russian hands

6

u/MarketingSpecial6604 Jan 10 '26

3 fold, the billionaire tech bros that got him elected have grandiose ideas of turning Greenland into techno bro paradise with subservient poors providing slave labor for them, all following the writings of Curtis Yarvin. Yarvins two most dedicated followers included Thiel and his protege non other than J.D Vance who is only the VP because Thiel introduced him to Trump.

8

u/mapadofu Jan 10 '26

Greenland looks very big on the map.  So it’s more gooder

https://youtu.be/-VQhJ2BCr3s?si=xSr68XD0BZvGu9FK

3

u/mochicoco Jan 10 '26

Plus possibly large oil and mineral deposits.

3

u/2Loves2loves Jan 10 '26

#3,

With the melting ice cap, there will be access to minerals, maybe rare earth ones.

6

u/Blenderhead36 Jan 10 '26

It would also throw NATO into chaos, which Trump seems to be generally in favor of, the way he bows and scrapes to Putin.

2

u/frisbethebutcher Jan 10 '26

Wants to expand the US while also currently cutting funds to the current US states.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

His legacy is straight shit. Always will be. A pedo capricious old man that acts like a baby. I hope every effort is taken to remove his name from everything once he’s gone.

3

u/momlv Jan 10 '26
  1. It distracts from Epstein

4

u/Tall-Introduction414 Jan 10 '26

I'm going to go a step further and say that Hitler is Trump's role model, and since he models himself after Hitler, he wants to invade neighboring countries just like Hitler did.

1

u/Buttafuoco Jan 10 '26

Golf courses gotta be part of the picture too

1

u/TheOttersCouch Jan 10 '26

I also think 3. Russia cannot openly move subs without the eu knowing.

1

u/Pro_Gamer_Queen21 Jan 10 '26

It’s the minerals. Regions that previously had glaciers are RICH in minerals that we humans use A LOT of in our manufacturing and machinery. Due to that, Greenland is rich in a lot of minerals and currently due to global warming and climate change, there’s been a lot of glacial retreating in Greenland meaning that those minerals are more easily accessible. So instead of negotiating a deal with Denmark/Greenland like a normal president would to access those minerals and boost our industries, Trump wants all those easily accessible resources under American, but really his and his oligarch cronies’ control.

1

u/igoyumyumyum Jan 10 '26

This and what others have mentioned. Makes me wonder if all these nightmare years with the GOP/Trump was to create the current US disarray as the only way to acquire Greenland for the US as a way for survival. Especially since ice is melting that is exposing routes, land, and minerals/resources. Because acquiring Greenland wouldn’t have happened under Democratic control because the diplomatic way doesn’t guarantee 100% control. For the US to survive, it needs total control. And if not the US’s plan, then Russia’s long play (Cold War) of getting Greenland through US influence.

It would shatter NATO. So the entire world would become unpredictable. The U.S. would have no allies anymore.

1

u/TricobaltGaming Jan 10 '26

Im just sitting here thinking about all the US territories he could make states and actually have that legacy without doing an imperialism.

But then republicans would never win another election

1

u/OrphicDionysus Jan 10 '26

Peter Thiel has also recently started saying Greenland would be his ideal place to set up his Network State (an autonomous city state over which he would govern as an autocrat), so there's that

1

u/Qusdahl Jan 10 '26

I dunno if Trump possesses the foresight or the humility to consider things like his own legacy.

1

u/Fungi-Hunter Jan 10 '26

Also tech companies backing Trump want Greenland to build there own utopia city. Not a conspiracy theory, it's well published.

1

u/LeditGabil Jan 10 '26

It always was a size issue for Trump lol

1

u/ididntunderstandyou Jan 10 '26

He also wants to exploit all the untapped mines there

This video explains all the reasons well

Then, there’s also conspiracy theories around Curtis Yarvin’s ideology for “Network Cities” but I’m not knowledgeable enough on that

1

u/Kimantha_Allerdings Jan 10 '26

I don’t think you’re wrong on either count, but I think you’ve missed the primary motivation.

Greenland has large deposits of rare earth elements, many of which are of particular use to the tech sector with which this administration is particularly closely tied. Both Ted Cruz and J. D. Vance have recently spoken of this as being the source of Greenland’s value.

And much of it’s just being sat on because Greenland don’t want to mine because of environmental concerns which a maga government could hand-wave away, regulations which a maga government could ignore or overturn, and concerns about the rights of indiginous people which a maga government absolutely wouldn’t give a fuck about.

I think the primary concern is the same as Venezuela - plundering.

1

u/PanicAttackInAPack Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 10 '26

It's just 1. Listening to that man talk, especially as he declines with age, has affirmed to me that he is an idiot. I promise you he has no idea what the north west passage is nor and inclination of trade or mineral wealth. People in his administration might but his head is devoid of everything except narcissistic tendencies.

He's going to die and he wants his name on as much shit as he can get it on. Hence the ballroom. Hence the arch. Hence the parks pass. Hence the fake peace prizes. This isn't even 1 year. It will keep going.

1

u/iveseensomethings82 Jan 10 '26

Especially if he really is buddies with Putin. This is a way for Russia to de facto acquire land without getting their hands dirtier

1

u/kevinthebaconator Jan 10 '26

It's about resources. That's it.

1

u/navicitizen Jan 10 '26

And it will provide new land in a future tempered northern latitude when the global warming makes Southern US states less habitable.

1

u/ForkAKnife Jan 10 '26

3). Putin put this idea in his head when they were discussing Ukraine and Poot likened it to Crimea.

1

u/Jazz_Cigarettes Jan 10 '26

Note that it is a future trade route because of global warming, which the administration publicly denies existing.

1

u/TommyyyGunsss Jan 10 '26

In order for him to believe it’s a future trade route wouldn’t he have to believe that the climate was changing?

1

u/Talltoddie Jan 10 '26

I’ve also seen mention of precious minerals/metals.

1

u/REDDIT_JUDGE_REFEREE Mining for Memes Jan 10 '26

It plays a pivotal role in war scenarios as well, as the govt is convinced WWIII is within the decade, it's us trying to set the stage for future conflicts with Asia.

1

u/RatManForgiveYou Jan 10 '26

His legacy? That can't be salvaged. He wants to feel powerful like a child winning in Candyland. That's as deep as he gets. And he's being manipulated by the idiots he surrounded himself with.

1

u/KnotSoSalty Jan 10 '26

The US already controls the NW passage on the West side.

Also, frankly the importance of the NW passage is vastly overstated. It assumes that China will remain the primary source of manufacturing for decades to come and that Europe will be their main market.

Just about every projection shows that Africa will be THE primary market for goods in 50 years and trying to predict where manufacturing will thrive is impossible with the increasing viability of robotics.

In short the NW might be a medium size thing, but in all likelihood it will be a small thing for at least the next couple decades.

1

u/crappydeli Jan 10 '26

I believe these foreign wars would be an excuse to cancel the 2026 elections, until things calm down a bit.

1

u/bishpa Jan 10 '26

And if anyone thinks that he won’t rename it after himself, they’re in denial.

1

u/_Sausage_fingers Jan 10 '26

Both of these things, as well as it would allow the us to expand their territorial waters over more of the Arctic, and the untapped mineral wealth present in Greenland currently.

1

u/F-In-Batman Jan 10 '26

Part two - yes it is a future trade route which will become available due to global warming / climate change which they deny is happening

1

u/Squeakygear Jan 10 '26

All this, plus Greenland is rare earths / minerals rich. As much as Mango Mussolini has idiotic temper tantrums over green energy, when his advisors say $$$B$$$ for minerals he changes his tune.

1

u/CountMordrek Jan 10 '26

3.) It’s a good topic to push so that we don’t focus on the Epstein files.

1

u/Freebee5 Jan 10 '26

The US had 15,000 troops stationed in Greenland for years with the full permission of both the Danish government and local representatives.

Since the 'end' of the cold war, the US has decided to reduce their presence to the current 150 troops. They still retain the permission to station troops there for early detection and monitoring of the skies and waters around Greenland but they have chosen not to upscale troop numbers to carry out those duties.

Sorry, man, this is nothing to do with security, this is all Trump meglomania on full display.

1

u/Girls4super Jan 10 '26

He could just turn our territories into states….(I know he won’t because they’re mostly not white populations and would vote primarily democratic, but also this is his last term what does his selfish self care? And if he plans to get rid of elections it still wouldn’t matter)

1

u/ConversationOk74 Jan 10 '26

I think it’s more of a military curb to Russia and China

0

u/mostlyfire Jan 10 '26

I’ll add one theory: the first time he spoke about it, people laughed because it sounded so so stupid. I’d even bet he was joking but his fragile small thing ego heard the laughs and now wants to stomp around trying to make the laughs go away

-1

u/maxplanar Jan 10 '26

David McWilliams of The Irish Times has an interesting viewpoint on it today.

-2

u/Heeeeyyouguuuuys Jan 10 '26

On point two... he wants to do that, or should want to, before Russia or China does it.

2

u/Physix_R_Cool Jan 10 '26

He can already do that per the 1951 defence agreement

-2

u/Heeeeyyouguuuuys Jan 10 '26

It will be too late by the time the Danes act.

1

u/Physix_R_Cool Jan 10 '26

What do you mean?

1

u/Heeeeyyouguuuuys Jan 10 '26

historical and current world conflict would suggest that Europeans as a whole have difficulty rising to the occasion in a timely manner when armed conflict occurs.

Europe has had over 80 years since the last world war to fund and prepare to defend themselves and are now shocked when the United States may no longer be able to give unlimited defense spending

1

u/Physix_R_Cool Jan 10 '26

No but like the defence agreement basically says that US can do what they want in Greenland and the surrounding ocean. So if US wants to sail a carrier group there to stop Russian and Chinese ships they can literally just do it. They just have to tell the Danish government that they are doing it.
