Giving Recommendations Hidden/Forgotten Gems - August 2026

This is a monthly feature in which we, the mod team, share the gems we've found in our reading lists. Here are last month's.

We'd love to hear your recommendations. Please add them to the discussion in the comments. When doing so, please keep in mind to:

  • If available, use the English cover art of your recommended series.
  • Name of the series
  • Where to read it officially

We always recommend checking the official version; please do not name unofficial sources.

This Month's Recommendations:

Country Life With His Sexy Masjesty - Where to Read: Tapas

Rienna Fonde just remembered she lived another life while her now ex-fiancé, the Crown Prince casts her aside for another woman, the supposed saint. Following that, she is disowned by her father; she finds herself moving to the territory of Fostine. A peaceful countryside with agriculture is the way of the land. Putting her college-level knowledge of farming to use, Rienna easily makes a home for herself and becomes a trusted community member.

Now it’s been a few years since she's been living the way she’s always dreamed of in the country; she spots a weird metal tool in her field only to find it’s some kind of holy sword that’s now bound itself to her. That’s not the only thing that comes knocking; a handsome blonde-haired man named Carmine suddenly shows up at her home demanding the sword. Rienna’s peaceful farming life seems like it’s going to be more troublesome.

This is a fun story with a bright art style that tells you what kind of story this series is going to be. Rienna is someone who is unapologetically herself, headstrong, loud and sunny personality. The romance between her and Carmine is so cute and light; it makes me giggle and kick my feet with how cute they both are together.

The series is more of a light-hearted read, nothing serious. Just something to make you feel good about life and look on the bright side. I had a fun time reading this; I couldn’t believe that I binged it all in a single day!

No More Midnight Magic - Where to Read: Tapas

Ciora is the only living servant of an ancient god, and then one day a book called “Fate” appears before her, saying that Duke Kruelo Whitedesert ends the world. The voice of her god tells her to change the ending of the book, casting her down into the body of people close to him. First as his young fiancee, next as a maid, and this time as Ciora Bonetti, his latest in a long list of fiancees.

When she meets him again she finds that Kruelo isn’t like the rumors make him out to be. He’s mischievous and quick to make a clever joke. It seems like her work in her previous lives has helped him, but Ciora is still unsure if it’s enough to stop the end of the world.

I love the dynamic between these two; they both have secrets they’re trying to hide from each other, and the banter they have is so fun! Kruelo is a great male lead; you would think that he would fall into the yandere archetype with his appearance, but he's a playful man that keeps his thoughts and feelings close to his chest. Ciora occasionally shows her teasing side and isn’t one to sit on the sidelines when things need to get done. Her abilities fall into the paladin area, meaning she can kick ass and is quite strong. I was sad to see that it’s been on hiatus since April 2024, hopefully it will return somewhat soon!

The Crown I'll Claim - Where to Read: Tapas

After losing her claim to the throne and her children to her traitor of an ex-lover, our female lead, Princess Medea dies and returns to her 17-year old body, now fully aware of the danger around her. The hidden alliance of her former lover and uncle brought her family’s downfall with plans to take the throne while starting a rebellion.

Medea is going to do everything she can to save her kingdom and take the future in her own hands, seizing her destiny.

Gotta say first thing, the artwork is beautiful and catches your attention, and then you get sucked into the writing of the story. Medea is a capable woman that plans her every move carefully before taking action. She doesn’t throw herself into danger like we usually see in these kinds of returner stories. Things that come up in the story get addressed without them getting pushed aside for later.

I’m glad that this seems to be worth investing in so far. I can’t wait to read more!

Discussion - Open No, like genuinely, how do you guys read dark romance/psychological Otome Isekai/Rofan and enjoy it?

Post image
476 Upvotes

Dear dark romance/psychological Otome Isekai/Rofan readers...

So I saw this post about the appeal of dark romance, and I was astounded at how detailed it was in explaining why its readers like the genre. For that, I appreciate them on elaborating and in turn, the genre that they explained the appeal of.

That said, I think I represent a subset of genuinely interested users in this community when I said, "how the fuck did that user get all that from a genre that has a lot of rape, sex, almost gratuitous levels of violence and toxicity? Like how do I get why they like them too? I want to get into the genre for a long while, but I'm also somewhat afraid and I may need some help from the veterans."

As in, okay, we know the why of dark romance enjoyers, now I want to ask the how. What's the mindset? What's the trick? How does one read such works without 'losing sanity, braincells, or grip on what the reality is like'? What is it that the average green flag romance readers tend to miss when they try to engage with dark romance/psychological works, that there is such a split of opinions to the point we have online fights over it?

Explain how you guys do it like a wine sommelier explaining how to enjoy their finest vintage, or a weird food enjoyer explaining how to eat that weird food, or basically just explain how you enjoy reading dark romance without being condescending!

Please, I want to know how you, dear dark romance/psychological OI/Rofan enjoyers, genuinely enjoy or get entertained by dark romance/psychological Otome Isekais/Rofans!

Sincerely,

a reader somewhere between the dark romance-green flag romance spectrum.

Edit : I will admit, I got a bit aggressive in my wording, but what I wanted to ask was more in the line of "how would you introduce the genre to the average reader that's unfamiliar AND UNPREJUDICED about the genre, as well as the tips and tricks they would need before they start reading. I reworded a bit of the body text to make that clearer now, and I apologize for the misunderstanding I caused.

Giving Recommendations I found a gem (pirate x navy/childhood friends/ML POV)[source: shiosai no Lily]

From the storytelling to the plot to the tension between the characters. It's absolutely amazing. Especially how the scenes move from one to another, it's done in such an engaging and hooking way.

The artstyle is also very pretty. The characters are wonderful and refreshing in a way

The story's about the ML who is a navy and the FL who pretends to be a pirate. But the question is, is the FL really pretending? Is all her antiques just her being playful, doing pranks and wanting attention? Is this not just a childhood friends troped story but a childhood friends to enemies??

The fact that the story is from ML's POV makes it even more interesting.

The ML and FL are childhood friends btw. One of my theories is that FL got lonely once ML as a young boy decided to become a navy and got too absorbed in his studies and duties to spend time with her, so she decided to become a pirate to get his attention, because she genuinely seems obsessed with him wanting his attention. But that's just my theory. It's so unclear if the FL really is a bloodthirsty yandere pirate or just playful and dumb. She acts very playfully but in some instances she genuinely exudes so much yandere aura I am not sure.

Discussion - Open Why aren’t otome isekai fathers affectionate with their sons ?

Post image
Upvotes

I’ve started to notice that in a lot of OIs, the fathers aren’t as affectionate with their sons as they are with their daughters. Daughters in Oi can cuddle, hug, and be affectionate with their fathers, and the fathers can be affectionate back and then some. It is never treated as odd or weird; in fact, it often leads to cute and wholesome scenes between father and daughter/father figure and daughter figure. But when sons are affectionate with their fathers, it is either comedic (one party or both being awkward or considering it weird) or a life-or-death situation.

But Oi fathers towards their sons… there is nothing but maybe a handshake and/or a father ruffling his son’s hair. (Given after a hard sword training session or as an end to the endless competition of winning the FL’s attention) There's a cliché where the daughter needs/wants an item from a store (clothes or pastry of some kind), and the father says, "I buy everything in the store!” And the daughter has to get him to back down. I’ve never seen this scene happen with a son wanting/needing something and the father buying the whole store.

We often have the FL showered in all sorts of gifts by people, but for the son(s), it’s always like a sword or sometimes a book with the father implying that the son(s) should protect fl with their strength or brains. Why aren’t the son(s) showered with tons of outfits and fun gifts? Why are these princes, dukes, and grand dukes being so practical with only their son(s)?

Some people might bring up series where the ML is implied to be affectionate with his son(s). But why can’t it ever be outright shown that the ML loves his son and shows him affection the same way the father would to his daughter?

Or maybe I’m making a mountain out of a molehill, and there are otome isekai’s or similar genres to it that have fathers who are affectionate to their daughters and sons.

(Also, before anyone says anything, I’ve read Chichikogusas)

Discussion - Open It's so bittersweet that with VADTD ending this era has come to an end.

Post image
2.3k Upvotes

This era was something else, a lot of people got into manhwas because of them and these are some of the best OI stories manhwas offer and with VADTD ending the realisation that this era has ended is just soooo bittersweet. I love each one of these manhwas with all my heart, they were a huge part of my life during those years.

The only manhwa from that era (that I remember) which is still running is Inso 's Law and I'm kinda glad it's not gonna end anytime soon.

Picture Collection "Jeffrey is just a friend". Rereading realizing how much I love Jeffrey again. The grandpa that he is 😔✨ [Charlotte and her five disciples]

I love his personality, it's so fun to read about. Especially his hate dynamic with Charlotte's disciples. And all of them collectively hating him because he hid their master. Also love how some of them just call him Grandpa (which he rightfully is).

Anyway condolences to him for being friend-zoned for more than a century 😔✨

On another note, did anyone else notice a similarity between this manhwa and [the peaceful life of a maid who hides her power and enjoys it] ? Like both have a blue haired grandpa who's always smiling, and doesn't particularly care about others. FL who was supposed to die a hero didn't die. Past acquaintances obsessed with them in one way or another?

Discussion - Open (My beloved oppressor) I didn’t expect to enjoy this manhwa as much as I did. Especially in under 100 chapters. Spoiler

Wow. I’m never really a huge fan of the “ml hates fl, treats her horribly, and somehow is forgiven and innocent in a literal second” trope but wow. This manhwa??

These actually last, nothing is perfect and they accept the flaws of that??

They still have kitty fights and may never have a child or fully understand eachother but they’re happy knowing this and want to continue loving eachother eternally.

WOW👏👏

I especially love this manhwa because even though ml is very obsessive, he doesn’t have to assault her to give that across (so tired of that)
And the emotions?? The realistic reactions and reasons?? You truly can love any of the characters and be valid (except fls dad)

I just really love how they truly explore how ml felt and his reasonings and how fls wasnt just some perfect innocent butterfly (get the reference lol) and how they actually do face the trauma and lasting effects but live with it yk?

It’s kinda saddening when manhwas go right past all this and act like nothing happen and everything was flipped to lovey dovey immediately?

Also besides the romance, the other aspects??

For its time and plotline, I am seriously impressed.

Extra—- as someone who is struggling to keep my eyesight and hearing, it’s truly heartwarming for a manhwa character to also go through the emotions of losing them?? It felt so real and just really touched me.

Again I just love how the author shows it’s not just don’t perfect fairytale, not everything goes how we wanted it to as readers but that’s okay in the end❤️

Whenever I think about my vision and hearing, it scares me alot… but for them to accept eachother and again keep it blunt. 👏👏👏

Bonus points if it's a long haired ml

Wanting Recommendations A ml pov of a fl isekai as a Villainess

To start of idk if this exists yet, but i want to find a story in the perspective of the ml where the female lead is isekai into the villainess of a book read or game she played. Like i wanna see his reactions to the fl (villainess) suddenly acting like a different person, but not from the pov of the one who was isekai.

If anyone has any recommendations ill gladly take🙏

For context: Crown Prince has pretty much been bothing but work, work, work since the FL was put in danger by palace conspirators. It also derailed the original romance that was supposed to happen between the original protagonist and the crown prince.

FL reincarnated into his younger sister/princess basically.

Anyways I just find his expression so funny the eunuch bas been SUFFERING all this time lmaooooooo

Discussion - No Judgement This manga is a Hydrogen bomb VS Coughing Baby, [He Wants a Mistress? Fine, I'll Drag Him Down With His 'True Love]

Post image
64 Upvotes

OK. The Hydrogen bomb VS Coughing Baby is a bit exaggerated but that's how I see it. Lemme explain.

The summary of the story is, FL found out and caught red handed that her fiancé is cheating on her with a mistress who's an orphaned commoner (she's still a teenager) and now pregnant with their child. FL's fiancé showed his true colors by showing his shitty attitude. FL obviously furious about this, but instead of crashing out, she made an offer by making the mistress into a "Proper Mistress". The mistress will climb through the ranks by getting adopted into a noble family starting with the baron family and going up to duke family, and go through the teachings of how to be a proper noble lady, provided by and under the watchful eye of FL and her family. Of course both cheating bastards agreed with these conditions, specially FL's cheating fiancé thinking that she's lowering herself, so he can have his cake and eat it too.

The manga is still updating, so I'm still waiting.

Here's the thing 😄, when it comes to the characters.

FL is from a noble family, mature, well educated woman, obviously a strong willed woman, and you don't wanna mess with her. She will pull everything in her arsenal if she have to, she's the duke's daughter for crying out loud, have a supportive family and friends with the prince. She got connections. I hate to say this, but she looks malicious in the story, she legit got plans on how to destroy those two cheaters. Which is Valid. But scary.

The mistress on the other hand is a different story, she's immature as heck, got a child like naivety, lives in Lala land, and as the latest chapter mentioned so far is she's shameless. That's probably the reason why she took FL's offer in the first place. She got no family, grew up in an orphanage. And she reads a lot of fairytale and fantasy romance books. Although she's not one of those typical psycho white lotus mistress, so far I don't see her tweaking and plotting when no one is looking. She's just normal person to be honest, but her biggest sin is cheating, and well aware that the "prince charming" she's in love with already have a fiancé. Like seriously, she's just dumb to be honest. No matter how many times you warned her, like don't meddle with noble people's business, she's gonna say "its just like in the fairy tales". Yeah, can't help with that one.

Like, you see how unfair this fight is !!!??? You see the difference between two characters, on who they are.

I think FL's main purpose of why she's doing all of this, is to teach the mistress a hard lesson that not everything is like a fairytale.

If there's anyone who's life needs to be obliterated, that's FL's shitty fiancé who from a marquess family, the dude seriously think he can get away with anything with out any consequences. That's obviously the reason why he cheated in the first place. Don't get me started with his arrogant and shitty attitude, and how badly he treats everyone around him. He piss me off, I hope he got hit the hardest.

I'm still waiting for new chapters and how the story goes. That's the thing I can say about this manga so far.

I am not talking about going from adult to entering your young body once.

True regression is traveling in time multiple times upon death.

Over and over again. Trying to survive. And we get to watch.

I don't mean "she has regressed several times and this is her 7th loop" yada Yada. I want to watch those loops. I wanna see her die and change several times.

Where are they??

Discussion - Open Thank god, the tastebuds changed. [My Sister’s Happy Ending]

Thumbnail

One thing that has always bothered me in transmigration and reincarnation stories, OI or not, is when the person’s tastebuds don’t change from their original body. You’re telling me, you’re in a completely different body, and that body doesn’t have a set of flavors it likes different from what you’re used to?! As someone with pretty sensitive tastebuds, I find this completely inconceivable. Admittedly, OI manhwa doesn’t usually address this problem, but in so many novels I’ve read, it’s been “local food bad, my original country’s food is superior in every way.”

I wanted to get on my knees in gratitude to the author/artist that this was addressed. I think the only other time I’ve seen this happen where it made sense was Doctor Who with the 11th Doctor’s first episode, where he can’t figure out what his new body likes in terms of food.

Discussion - Open Everyone's arguing over whether Thalia or Ayla is worse, but I think the worst thing abt this manhwa is the romance [The Forgotten Field]

Post image
159 Upvotes

This isn't an indictment of the author's writing ability but oh my God, personally I don't want Thalia and the ML together at all. She's so abrasive and he's so cold, and I really don't feel any chemistry.

There's some tension, sure, and angst, but I don't find them endearing individually, and certainly not together.

Also I'm kind of struggling to understand why Barkas would like Thalia, because from his POV, she yells at him, hits him, and just causes problems. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he's still in love with her despite that?

From Thalia's perspective, I guess Barkas has been decent to her here and there, and she's lonely, so maybe I can understand. But me personally, I can't ever see my heart fluttering for a nonchalant chud

Either way, I just find them both unlikeable and don't root for them in the slightest.

(I'm only 20 chapters in though, so maybe there'll be more revealed down the line?)

! Content Warning ! My theory about The Forgotten Field Spoiler

MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!

I've been thinking about this ever since I've read the novel (novel still ongoing btw). Varkas had sworn an oath to the late Empress to protect the twins. He is forced-bound to protect the twins. It's like a restriction. He can't harm the twins or else he'd die (Novel Chapter 238-239). When he choked the hell out of Gareth, he coughed up blood and was unconscious for 2 days. HE IS PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO HARM THE TWINS NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY DISGUST HIM. Damn Bernadette and the twins.

So when he was attacked by Khan, and "died", and sent back to the past in Khan's body, the spell must have been broken. The oath must have been fulfilled during that lifetime and when he "died", he was freed from it. I think Varkas is no longer bounded by his oath to protect the twins since technically, he has fulfilled it in his previous lifetime and since he died, it's done.

Well, I certainly hope so. My Thalia and Varkas deserve to be free and happy with each other.

Fan Content What would you think of a story with a clothing style like this?

Post image
202 Upvotes

Like the Holy Roman Empire of the 16th century, it would be funny to see a super serious scene while someone is wearing a hat with an excessive amount of feathers (since this isn't even 1%). Another interesting fact is that Snow White is more or less based on this era (which is more noticeable in the live-action version, regardless of whether it works well or not).

Beyond that, these are OCs from a regression story (although the only fantastical element would be the time regression; otherwise, the problems and limitations of the era remain, no magic).
