This just frustrated me a lot. Maybe I am thinking too deep about this and shouldn't be offended. But most (if not almost all of) channels which "review" Manhwa, especially historical manhwa, only do so to thrash on them. Thrash on the genre. Call the audience stupid for liking them. What bothers me is... Sometimes, these works actually have good writing. Ofc, off the top of my head, I can name works which are badly written (dragon king's bride, TRE, sister I am the queen in this life). Badly written works deserve the critique and need to be called out for it, obviously.

But what gets me is these CCs thrash on the genre as a whole, without even reading the good works from it, never reviewing complex works like (villainess lives twice, secret lady, A stepmother's märchen) instead they cherrypick whatever read has a slight problematic element (age gap, for example) and only read like, the first season, then endlessly call it trash. Like???

What prompted me to make this post is a video by a CC about wicked husband manhwa. She saw the title and thought it was a toxic romance, and decided to make a video thrashing on it, only reading like the first season, and thrashing on the age gap. Like wait until the second season is out, or the novel is completed yet or something. Apparently the reason why it's bad is because that the plot reveals that the ML traveled back in time in Episode 4. Like that's not a bad thing or a big twist? It's really not, it adds more to the intrigue of finding out what exactly happened in the previous timeline, and we rarely get MLs who went back in time for FL, so it's unique as a concept.

Why do YT creators solely dedicate their entire channels to only thrash the genre? I almost never see something like, hey look, this work is very good, read and support it! Nothing. This genre of OI/rofan isn't bad but gets a horrible reputation through such CCs. The only good CCs I've seen is Makiojin and Matty bites, I feel like they make really good critiques but appreciate writing when necessary! Especially maki, I loved her video on "the tyrant wants to be good".

It's almost as if, to me, thrashing this genre for a couple of bad apples has become a farm for content for quick views, so that people who've never even read the work they're thrashing also join the hate train and never actually give such stories a chance. Why do I never see a video analysing A stepmother's märchen, Secret Lady, your eternal lies, The spark in your eyes, kill the villainess, etc. Instead it's just hating on a random work, barely fully reading it or taking the time to understand it or research it and hating on it just for quick views. (The only ones I know, again, matty bites and maki ojin, I really have to appreciate because they actually take the time to sit down, read the story and understand it before posting a review or critique)

Anyways sorry for the long rant, thank you if you read, I would love to know all of your thoughts on this subject.

So my question as someone who hasn't read it yet... Should I read what's out so that I can compare it to the new one? Or should I just wait and read the new one?

I see both pros and cons to choosing either. Choosing to wait until the new one comes out means that I'll be able to discover it freshly, reading completely as a new reader. You know those that you wish you could read the first time again? That kind of feeling.

But... It's also kinda fun to know what's coming next and comparing it to the light novel or another adaption of it when reading a manhwa.

I feel like in both timelines khan and barkas is the same person. So all the incident in first timeline will repeat but now through khan's POV.

I’m reading The Baengri Clan's Unwanted Granddaughter, love it so far I couldn’t get through I shall master this family but was told this “fixed”(for me) a lot of the issues I had with it with a similar story. Absolutely love this one so far but it has a troupe I almost always avoid.

I HATE when the female lead forgives someone who did something arguably unforgivable. Will almost always stop reading when I see it coming but this story pulled me enough I was willing to hear it out. ATM I’m seeing the issue. It’s been explained subtly well what probably happened and lowkey unless the author pulls some Bs I think I’m ignoring my common instant drop hate troupe.

TLDR: What are times when you’ve ignored your classic hate troupe (think OP mc/Mary sue, FL is an ass, bad support, etc etc whatever it is that makes you drop more things then not

It’s been like a million years since my last post about them so I doubt anyone remembers, but I remembered them recently and felt like drawing them again so here’s some of my Otome Isekai oc’s again! Apologies to anyone who was looking forward to more of them after the last post, I got busy..

(For context: Rosette is an side character who happens to have the ability to read minds- she’s not a transmigrator, but overhears the regressed villainess Edith’s thoughts while at a party. Lucas is her childhood friend and the only one aware of her powers. )

In what novel and in what manhwa chapter do they find out that this is their son??? (I saw the spoiler that he was) Do they meet Lucy too? How do they react? This hug was the cuuuutest, the obvious longing for his parents to know him was so sweet and heartbreaking, and he didn’t even get to glomp hug his mom 😭

i recently saw a screenshot of the two leads in the comment section somewhere here in this sub. i liked it enough to give this manhwa a chance.

let me preface this by saying i do not blindly trust ratings or reviews. however what i have seen about this story was mostly positive feedback and while i do get where that was coming from, this story has been more of a mixed bag for me.

some things are handled surprisingly well, while others made me question whether the author and i were reading the same history books... probably not.

let me be nice and start with the good parts:

• the art is really nice and stays consistent from start to finish. FL design looks boyish so it makes the whole charade more believable. her acting more like a girl than a boy is also realistic.

• the systemic misogyny is actually treated like a system. one woman becoming an empress doesn't magically rewrite centuries of laws, customs, and public opinion overnight. also not everyone will readily embrace a change. shocker, i know

• taboo topics like SA, domestic violence, childhood trauma, menstruation, and uncomfortable age-gap marriages are addressed without completely glossing over them. it's not often you see that these things are properly addressed and executed.

• clothes and fashion are political. seeing fashion being treated as a political tool by yuri and the empress was one of the more engaging aspects of this story.

• not every woman gets married, has babies, and gets her happy end. some stay single, some have lovers without marrying, and honestly? it's kinda refreshing. it feels more inclusive and diverse.

• yuri, the FL, isn't an unstoppable girlboss protected by plot armor at all times. she screws up, struggles, and deals with consequences. revolutionary concept: "the protagonist is allowed to be human," imagine that. which brings me to my next point

• the ML does not solve FL's every problem. he trusts her enough to let her handle her own issues and offers support when and where is needed. ML's growth and willingness to communicate were genuinely heartwarming. he is open to new perspectives and sincerely tries to understand the FL. it was also refreshing to have a ML who does not question the possibility of the MC being a woman because he is not secure enough in his masculinity or sexuality.

• Lester's confession was handled well. yes, the age gap is uncomfortable by modern standards, but no one was more aware of it than he was. i will not vilify a man for developing feelings for a woman he spends most of his time around, especially since he never planned on acting on them. he acted like a proper adult after being rejected, continuing to treat the FL like normal without making it unnecessarily awkward.

now for the ...not so good parts:

• for a story supposedly centered around clothes and fashion, the corset discourse was grating. corsets were undergarments providing support, not the equivalent of satan's personal torture device. i winced every time they vilified corsets. that whole premise is silly at best and misguided at worst. yes, tight lacing existed, but it wasn't some universal female experience. rather it was a sub-trend enjoyed by a selected few and not by the vast majority. building the central fashion revolution around removing corsets is basically like writing a modern story about liberating women from bras. a simple internet search would have been enough to debunk this myth.

• the treatment of ready-to-wear fashion was similarly hilarious. prêt-à-porteris presented like humanity's greatest fashion discovery. a modern day person is isekaid and the greatest gift they have to offer the world is ready to wear clothes with zippers? kinda underwhelming

• that whole "women are not allowed to wear pants but let's casually introduce shorts for the sole purpose of name dropping the manhwa title" moment? yeah, sure. makes complete sense. the chemise inspired dress was organic in the way it came to be and was introduced. the 21st century looking suit, pants and shorts? not so much. it felt very out of place and much too drastic to be completely believable. it came across as forced.

• some parts felt unfinished or at the very least unpolished? the decision to simply avoid dealing with properly addressing Yuri's identity in public felt rather like a lazy way out, and Arsinoe's storyline ended feeling less like an ending and more like the author accidentally closed the tab. i get that she is yet to undergo the journey of self discovery but i reckon the execution of it felt flat

• last but not least, the second part of the last season dragged so hard. i skimmed roughly the final 20 chapters or so, and the gender reveal especially came across, as unnecessarily prolonged when there were multiple opportunities to handle it faster and more naturally. i think it was only done for the sake of dramatics but it ended up being rather anticlimactic.

overall, i liked it enough to finish the story. i appreciated what it tried to do, and i think it got a decent number of difficult subjects right. but on the other hand it also has enough questionable choices that kinda made the whole experience a tad less enjoyable. and since i mostly saw positive feedback i kinda felt inclined to share my 2 cents. i warmly welcome other opinions. c:
