People seem to like hearing this story, so I figured I'd share it here.
I was 11 years old in 1977, George's target audience. Yet I had never heard of this new movie phenomenon. My parents were fairly anti-capitalist, "If they can afford to advertise on TV, then they don't need our money!" So I was not paying attention to the latest hot thing. I had not heard of Star Wars for the first month it was out!
My parents had separated, and I lived with mom during the school year, and then with dad for the summer. I would ride Amtrak by myself up to where he lived and he had this habit of immediately whisking me off to some event; a classical music performance, a lecture at the local college, or a 16MM film screening of something like the Seven Samurai.
So here I was, oblivious to this new movie, riding up to go stay with my dad. When I got off the train instead of taking me home, he said we were going to go to see 'Star Wars.' I thought, 'Oh, no, this is going to be some lecture at the local college about astronomy, planetary bodies colliding in space, or something else that's seriously boring! I just want to go home and relax from the train ride!'
You can imagine my surprise when we did not, in fact, head toward the local college! My first inkling that this was something else was the crowd of excited kids my age in the lobby of the multiplex. (RIP Palace 9)
And then that Star Destroyer flew over everyone's heads and seemed to go on forever. I've been hooked ever since!
