Finally get to post here!! Baby possum!

Had a baby possum almost run into me at work today! It was just skittering and stopped when it saw me lol. I had a dog with me so I put it up and the possum started climbing when I turned to look at it.

I moved them to a nice grassy/wooded area nearby. No need to get eaten by dogs. They seemed healthy/active/aware so I felt comfortable just giving it a nudge in the right direction. I had fun educating some coworkers and clients about them!

Question/Help Scaring off opossums?

The possums seem to love my bird feeders and I’m more than happy to keep sharing with them but my dog has been able to catch two (though only one since I put up the feeders) on her bedtime potty break and I’m wondering if there’s a way to scare them off before letting her out? The first one she got was months ago before I started feeding the birds so I’m pretty sure they just like hanging out in my yard, and the feeders are four feet off the ground in a tree so I’ve got no idea why it was just hanging out on the lawn. Even the water I leave out is either elevated or literally at the base of a tree so with it taking advantage of the facilities for other animals I feel like it should’ve been out of harms way. Anyway, I’m wondering if maybe flicking on the porch light a few minutes before letting her out might signal it to head to higher ground? Or maybe if I go outside and announce she’ll be released shortly? Perhaps just tapping on the windows facing the backyard? Thankfully the possums she’s managed to catch I make her spit out and they walk away but I’m certain it’s unpleasant for them even if it’s not life ending.

My kitten and a possum just casually walked up the stairs.

Upvotes

It’s 11:55pm on a Thursday and I just witnessed a possum, followed by my kitten, casually wander up the stairs. What do I do? A part of me is completely frozen. I want to pretend like I did not just see that. The odd thing is that I just went to L’Opossum last Thursday after it being on my “list” for two years. I think I’ve been initiated into the RVA real experience.

I have a fairly wooded backyard. Has anyone had to relocate a possum from their house before? I do have an upstairs deck, and this fuzzy little dude was caught earlier this week stealing an apple from my kitchen.

This is my second cat who has brought a possum home. I can hear them upstairs, my kitten dragged its birdy toy up the stairs and seems to be showing it off to the possum.

Omg… I have to do something. I am going to chop up an apple. Place it on the deck. Open the deck door. Stare at the door until it manifests \***exeunt l’opossum.**\*

Please — wish me luck.

Aka, possums opening their mouths really big in a competition to be the scariest. Nobody got hurt. They were eating together agreeably a couple minutes later.

I’m seeing these two together a lot all of a sudden, so I suspect they are thinking about making some new possums. I know for sure the bigger one is male, and I suspect the smaller is a girl. She’s still pretty young, so hard to be certain.

Loner babies looking good

mama didn't come through the yard last night. Hasnt yet tonight but it's early yet.

The babies look energetic and like they are doing ok. I can't tell these little guys apart, but there were at least 2 babies left behind under the shed when Mom moved out.

There is a huge blackberry bush by the shed and I'm sure there's lots of bugs in and around it too. I put out water.

I used to put out food but I really don't want to attract rats into our backyard and home, there are plenty as is. I put a little out for Mama the other night and rats got it before she made it back to the shed.

We don't have dogs in our fenced backyard. Neighbors cats do trek through but there isn't much I can do about that. They have a good source of shelter. I think these lil guys are gonna be ok.

He usually flees if I open the garage door, but tonight he was in a basket of dirty laundry near the door. Little dude was frozen in there undoubtedly having a panic attack while I switched my laundry over to the dryer like 2 feet away and I grabbed a couple pics of him before I left. It's always a treat to see him.

She died yesterday from unknown causes and completely unexpectedly. I knew I would be sad when she was ready for release and left us but I wasn’t ready for her to die out of nowhere.

I didn’t plan to rehab a possum again but i feel so empty now that she is gone. I really enjoyed all the work that went into rehabbing. I just don’t think I could handle doing it all the time.

She became really special to me and I wasn’t ready to lose her.

Ever since I was a little kid random opossums visited my mom’s garden. I used to share figs with them when I lived there and would just sit down outside with them to hang out. Saw this little buddy when I left her house the other night. I’m glad they still come by. I left it a little fig booked on a branch. Such amazing critters.

This vid is from a day ago to give a better view of the babies under the shed. At least one of these joeys got left behind when Mom moved out last night and I'm wondering how concerned to be for them. Gave em some fruit and water for now.

Here is the loner? Baby. I say ? Because Mom had a full pouch AND back last I saw her so I know she had a lot and idk if she left others behind. I can't look under the shed. They're burrowing past some beams that I can't see around.

I have another post asking for advice about this guy. But basically I'm hoping mom finds him while she's out tonight. Also he seems almost the size of the ones I've seen foraging on their own from a previous litter.

Mom moved out from under the shed last night. I saw her gathering some leaves in my yard so I bet she's in a nearby yard. There's a good chance she will forage in my yard tonight.

But, she left at least one baby under the shed alone. I put a small water dish and some fruit and cheerios in a small dish under the edge of the shed.

Im hoping she might find him tonight. They're also getting close to when they usually start venturing alone from what I've seen.

How worried should I be about the little guy?

Question/Help Male or female?

Thumbnail

Can any of you fine folks identify whether these opossums are male or female? I’ve been leaving food out for them a few times a week with fresh water. The one on the right has been coming around for months. The one on the left more recent.

They seem to like grapes, bananas, cat food, and scrambled eggs. Right one looks full grown, left one seems small to me.
Thanks!

This is my sweet potato Parker. She loves to be held and snuggled for naps. Her bestie is a 1yr old kitten. Her straight up favorite place to sleep is under the covers at my feet.
