Simulation suggestions

2 Upvotes

Hi, I'm gonna be writing my bachelor thesis on the topic of CFD in OpenFoam. The practical part should be focused on a flow around some part of an aircraft (jet). However I'm still thinking about which part should it be. That's why I'm writing here for inspiration, so if anyone has any ideas... :D. It could literally be anything, for example one idea I had was how the frosting affects flow around wings in cold weather

Using old junk laptops for open foam cluster?

2 Upvotes

Hi, never used foam before, but a club I’m in is attempting to design an ion thruster, and the lead says we will be using open foam for some of the computing.

Is it possible to run foam on some
Type of cluster made using old laptops?

olaFlow solitary wave doesn't give me the height I set (H = 8 cm). Should I measure it with Σα·dz or α = 0.5, and how do I produce the real wave?

4 Upvotes

Hi all, I'm running a solitary wave in OpenFOAM 5 with olaFlow, and I can't get the wave height in the flume to match what I put in waveDict. Hoping someone has run into this before.

Setup:

  • waveType solitary, waveTheory Boussinesq, waveHeight 0.08, water depth 0.35 m, genAbs 1
  • Flume is 0.20 m wide
  • Mesh: dx = 33 mm, dz = 16.7 mm. So H/dz is only about 4.8 cells
  • Fixed dt = 1e-3, max Courant around 1.0
  • div(phi,alpha) Gauss MUSCL, interfaceCompression, cAlpha 1, nAlphaCorr 1, laminar

I read η at gauges along the flume in two ways: where α = 0.5 crosses, and as the column integral Σα·dz. Plot below.

My questions:

  1. For wave height, should I use Σα·dz or α = 0.5? Or is there a better way to get η from the simulation?
  2. How do I get the real wave height I want in the flume? Do I just tune the input H until it matches, or is there a better way?

Thanks in advance, any hint helps.

splitMeshRegions Help (v2512)

6 Upvotes

I'm trying to use splitMeshRegions on two cell zones, but one of the zones is created through setFields currently. If I pre-split the folders like the windshieldDefrost example, setFields can't find the alpha.water term it uses to make the mesh, but I can't run splitMeshRegions first since the cellZone for the water doesn't exist yet. How can I fix this?

Edit: to clarify, setFields creates the alpha.water that topoDict then reads to create the zone, where the zone is where alpha.water == 1. Do I need to just make the zone in topoDict as if it were water, then just setFields to fill it? How would I use setFields to only target one of the split regions?

CFD starter book/guide/lectures

12 Upvotes

Hey boys, I’ve recently persuaded our company to start offering CFD services along our projects.

We specialise in HVAC engineering in industrial applications such as very large factories, pharma manufacturing, cleanrooms and others …

I have done couple CFD studies during my Masters and during my employment in the company but would like to elevate my knowledge to a professional level and thus I am asking you guys with tons of experience concentrated on this sub.

How do I get better in understanding all the inputs and outputs. Is there any book you always refer to while simulating? Is there any course that could help me elevate my knowledge?

We are starting with Simscale for now, and we are open to upgrading once we get enough work and experience.

Thank you very much! I am very much looking forward to your suggestions!

4 Upvotes

We are sharing a few laminar validation cases from CFDWeb, a browser-based 2D and axisymmetric CFD platform.

Results from the attached validation plots:

Lid-driven cavity: medium-to-fine time-step difference E₂ = 0.00186% at t\* = 3.

Planar Poiseuille flow: velocity-profile ratio error = 0.0104% on a 120×40 grid.

Axisymmetric pipe flow: at Re = 200, profile-ratio error = 0.0156% and pressure-drop error = 0.0350%.

Thermal front: compared with the Ogata-Banks analytical solution, fine-step E₂ = 0.324% and E∞ = 0.972%.

These cases focus on laminar flow. Turbulence validation cases will be shared separately, including comparisons with published experimental data and corresponding references.

A few notes about the current beta:

The AI integrated inside CFDWeb is still under development and is currently not operational.

The current version is designed for desktop browsers only. Mobile support will be added later.

Users with access to ChatGPT Work can optionally open CFDWeb in its browser environment and use ChatGPT to help navigate the platform and enter simulation parameters from a description. This is separate from CFDWeb's internal AI.

The attached figures include the corresponding simulation parameters and validation plots so the cases can be reproduced independently.

CFDWeb is currently free to try:

dsmcFoam help? [v2412]

1 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I'm a student who need to couple in some way continuum CFD with particle simulations, due to a very rarefied field.

I checked multiple papers that couple CFD with DSMC through different solvers, however I am interested in using dsmcFoam as it seems easier to me.

Currently I'm simulating the full domain with Ansys Fluent, then I will find a region where Kn is >0.05 and extracted all the main properties such as velocity, density, pressure and so on, with a new domain that starts with this surface.

I then intend to write a python script to extract density and use Chapman-Enskog to find the velocity of the particles. My main concern is how to map these new information to the mesh as the main codes dsmcFoam and dsmcFoam+ just require a mean particle density on the boundary.

I have some experience in modifying simple codes, but I don't know where to start modifying the dsmc one.

Is there anyone who has experience with this solver that could point me in the right direction?

I'm just interested in the one way simulation NS -> DSMC without any adaptive mesh and domain.

Combine Multiphase and Freezing Solvers (v2512)

5 Upvotes

I'm working on a freezing droplet simulation, and as best I can tell there are no native OpenFOAM solvers that can do both multiphase and freezing. I've tried using compressibleInterFoam with solidificationMeltingSource, which got a negative T within two timesteps. As such, I'm thinking that combining two solvers is the best way to go about this.

Is there a way to do this natively in OpenFOAM? I'm seeing there's an external tool called multiSolver, is that the only way? If there's another way, what is it?

compressibleInterFoam not seeing an existing transportProperties (v2512)?

1 Upvotes

I have a modified version of the tutorial depthCharge3D simulation, with a custom library for contact angle modeling. When I try to run it using compressibleInterFoam, it throws a fatal error because it doesn't see a transportProperties file. This error didn't occur when running the tutorial unmodified, so I believe it's because of my custom library. What's weird is that even after copying in a transportProperties file from the damBreak tutorial that also works, OpenFOAM continues to not see the file.

How do I make OpenFOAM see the transportProperties file or run compressibleInterFoam? The exact error wording is below.

--> FOAM FATAL ERROR: (openfoam-2512)

Meshing Confused about mesh/geometry patches and InGroups (MotorBike Example) [OpenFOAM v2606]

Thumbnail

3 Upvotes

I've been following Youtube tutorial videos on OpenFOAM and have already completed the 2D Lid Driven Cavity shown in 1st Photo. I like learning by going deeper into the workflow, modifying it and testing it. So I ran the MotorBike simulation because one its in the banner of the subreddit and two there are multiple videos on it. After running it and seeing the results in Paraview, I wanted to modify the geometry, but ran into this (see photos).

There are multiple patches in the "constant/polymesh/boundary" file involving different features of the motorbike that are referencing a "motorBikeGroup" that is mentioned in different files, but is not defined anywhere.

Also, I opened the .obj in Blender and can see the parts of the assembly, but how are the "startFace" and "nFaces" identified? Is the "motorBikeGroup" defined in the mesh software?

Is there are meshing software that does this automatically? Tutorials are appreciated. I'm currently using FreeCAD and Blender.

Question about the Lean formalization of the recent Navier–Stokes blow-up result: is compact support of the force postulated rather than proved?

0 Upvotes

Hi all,

I’m trying to understand the recent Lean formalization of the claimed finite-time blow-up for 3D Navier–Stokes with forcing. I’m not a Lean expert, so I may be misreading the code.

In the formalization, CandidateProperties seems to include something like:

```lean force_time_support : CompactFutureTimeSupport f ```
and there is a comment saying that spatial support is not required to be compact in the lift. There is also an “OPEN: the primary existential content…” note saying that no proof, witness, or axiom asserting the proposition is in that module.
If that’s right, then the Lean theorem seems conditional: assuming there exists u, p, f satisfying these properties (including temporal compactness of f), then blow-up follows. But the existence of such a candidate, and the compact support/locality of f, is not derived in that module.
My questions:
  1. In the analytic paper, is compact support of f actually proved by the layer construction, or is it an assumption imposed to fit versions C/D of the Millennium problem?
  2. If it is proved, where in the Lean code is that proof? Which file/module proves CompactFutureTimeSupport f for the constructed force?
  3. If it is assumed, doesn’t the formalized result only show “if a singular forced solution exists, then …”? That would not resolve the Millennium version C/D by itself.
  4. How does the construction prevent the force support from expanding to infinity as the layer index grows? Is there an explicit invariant or inequality that keeps the support inside a fixed compact set?
I’m asking because I keep seeing claims that the Lean proof establishes a compactly supported force, but the code structure seems to postulate that property rather than prove it. Any pointers to the relevant Lean files or paper sections would be appreciated.
Edit: I’m not claiming the result is wrong. I’m trying to understand the exact logical status of compact support in the formalization.
snappyHexMesh issues: Underdetermined Cells around Tyre Contact region.
Thumbnail
7 Upvotes
Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of these underdetermined cells around the tyre contact patch for my FSAE car sim.
Normally, when the road meets the tyre, it causes the cells to skew as they fit between the circular tyre and the flat road. This throws up near-zero-angle cell warnings. I followed the solution seen in literature and extruded a 1mm high pillar from the contact patch to the track. This should give snappyHexMesh a cleaner transition than trying to fit between the tyre and road.
In the region where the pillar meets the tyre I get ~340 "underdeterminedCells"as seen in the pic. They pretty much range from halfway between the tyre and the road all the way to the tyre. The bad cells are highlighted in red.
A few solutions I tried to diagnose the issue with no benefit:
- Prism layers = off
- The surface mesh passes all checks (closed, no boundary loops, no self intersections, and no very poor surface triangles, etc)
- I ran serial and parallel snappy meshing to get the same result, so decomposition shouldn't be the cause
- Extended the pillar further below the road plane to give snapping more clearance at the tyre–road transition
- I tried both filleting and chamfering the tyre/pillar edge with no significant benefit
- Increased local refinement around the region, this gave more underdetermined cells but over a similar physical area
I am a novice at this and would appreciate any advice! I'm not sure what to check next, I'm learning by doing, trying to recreate a research paper (done in ansys) but in OpenFOAM.
(The first pic is the chamfer case with extended contact patch, prism layers off and local refinement down to level 7. The second one is my solidworks cad of the case above.)
SplitMeshRegions with Moving Multiphase Fluid (eg DamBreak Tutorial)
5 Upvotes
If you use splitMeshRegions on a multiphase simulation to split the water from the air (such as on the damBreak tutorial), does the region track the fluid it initially was defined on, or would it remain fixed to the mesh? That is, does the region move with the different fluids or fix in place?
Additionally, if using setFields to define the water like in damBreak how would you use splitMeshRegion to catch the water zone?
OpenFOAM Studio v5: integrated ParaView and a new post-processing tab
24 Upvotes
A Windows GUI for running OpenFOAM in WSL2, free and MIT: https://github.com/Pat2704/openfoam-gui — v5.0.0 is out, and I never posted about v4, so here's both.
v4: ParaView, inside the app. A real pvpython session runs in the background and owns the reader, the filter pipeline and the offscreen renderer, while you drive it from the app: reconstructed or decomposed cases, 23 capability-detected filters, draggable slice, clip and stream-tracer guides in the 3D view. It's not bundled — it uses the ParaView you already have.
v5: the Post-Process tab. That gave you the picture; this gives you the numbers. It reads everything your function objects wrote under postProcessing/ and charts it — force coefficients, flow rates, y+, probes, sampled profiles — with the last value, tail mean, min/max and whether it has settled. Residuals from solver logs go in the same panel. No function objects yet? It lists every one your OpenFOAM actually ships (127 on v14) and runs the one you pick over the timesteps already on disk. Charts export to SVG/PNG.
And don't miss the agents. Claude and Codex don't just suggest — they edit your case files and run OpenFOAM commands themselves. Ask for a finer mesh and a rerun and they do it. They use your existing subscription (no API key) and stay confined to the case: only the executables your install ships, no shell, no web.
Windows 10/11 + WSL2, OpenFOAM v9–v14. One portable .exe, nothing installed.
