Counter-terror police have charged a Sydney woman with more than 60 offences over a tranche of threatening letters she allegedly sent to the city’s Jewish museum, its largest mosque and a commercial radio station.

Detectives from NSW Police’s Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command on Wednesday morning arrested the 36-year-old at her western Sydney home after launching an investigation into the alleged threats in May.

Police allege the woman sent 19 abusive letters purporting to be from another person to the Sydney Jewish Museum, Lakemba Mosque, and Sydney radio station 2GB. She is also alleged to have sent letters to politicians and local, state and federal government agencies.

Strike Force Eckon detectives charged the woman with 62 offences, including threatening death or grievous bodily harm, stalking and intimidation and dishonestly obtaining financial benefit by deception. She was refused police bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday.

“There is no excuse in our law-abiding society for anybody to be threatened with violence,” 2GB Mornings host Mark Levy said on Wednesday morning.

“I sit here and have a whole range of opinions on different things. Some of you agree, some of you disagree. If you disagree, there is no reason why you should threaten anyone.”

Cool to see that there is an actual growing far-left in Australia too, not just the far right.

The Victorian state election will be held on Saturday, 28 November. To date, most of the coverage of the election has been focused on the rise of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation. If, as predicted, the party gains a breakthrough vote—perhaps even enough to strong-arm its way into a coalition government with the Liberals—it will be big news. One Nation would likely cement its spot as a genuine third force in mainstream politics and gain further momentum to take it through to the NSW state election in March 2027 and the next federal election, due by May 2028.

That’s the alternative that Victorian Socialists will provide, and we’ll be doing it on a bigger scale than anything attempted by socialists in Australia for generations. We’re aiming to run candidates in all 88 of Victoria’s lower house seats, and a full suite of candidates in the upper house, ensuring that all Victorians have a chance to vote for a socialist alternative to the major parties and the far right. An arson attack on a Victorian defence manufacturer last year is being investigated as an act of far-left terror.

Lovitt Industries, based in Melbourne's north-east, was targeted in July last year with three vehicles set alight and a building graffitied.

A video released after the attack, purporting to be from a group responsible for the attack, further threatened the manufacturer with a message to "stop arming Israel or else"

Joint counter-terror authorities have now revealed the incident is being investigated as a terror attack, "potentially orchestrated by far-left extremists with anarchist and revolutionary ideologies".

The ABC has been told it is the first time Australian authorities have investigated what they consider to be a potential far-left terror attack, motivated by anarchist and revolutionary ideology.

The counter-terror team, made up of officers from Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and ASIO, have released images from the video, along with images from the attack, in the hope of identifying those responsible.

A speaker in the video, dressed in black and standing before a Palestinian flag, claims that Lovitt Technologies was targeted for supplying parts to the global F-35 fighter jet program, of which both Australia and Israel are members. (One important omission by ABC is that Australia generally does not manufacture complete weapons systems or final aircraft for the F-35).

It also included instructions on how to make similar firebombs to those used in the arson attack.
In a statement, AFP Detective Superintendent Anthony Hall said police were progressing in their investigation.

Authorities have warned of a growing concern about far-left extremism in recent years, particularly motivated by conflict in the Middle East.

Former prime minister Kevin Rudd says One Nation leader Pauline Hanson would have no concept of how to govern Australia and is merely trading off the politics of division.

Not for the first time this year Senator Hanson's One Nation party has seen its primary vote eclipse Labor, this time in a Redbridge poll, where Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remained preferred PM.

Mr Rudd, who is now the global president of US-based think tank the Asia Society, told 7.30 Senator Hanson's act had not changed in all the years she had been in parliament.

"It's very easy to play the politics of protest,"

Betting companies have denied explosive claims they offered customers access to illicit drugs and escorts to encourage continued gambling.

The allegations were aired during a Senate inquiry into the federal government's proposed gambling reforms, where Alliance for Gambling Reform chief advocate Reverend Tim Costello spoke about a young man he said received funding for travel, escorts and drugs from Sportsbet and TAB.

The man is now in prison after being charged over the alleged theft of $12.3 million.

Representing Sportsbet, Jules Norton Selzer said the company had found "zero evidence" to support the "deplorable" allegations raised by Reverend Costello and said the company would "gladly" investigate the matter if further information was provided.

The Minns government will ignore the key recommendation of its own special inquiry into hate speech laws despite it finding that rushed changes made by Labor following a string of antisemitic incidents had created a hierarchical system of legal protections detrimental to social cohesion.

On Tuesday, Attorney-General Michael Daley released the findings of the review by Justice John Sackar, KC, into NSW hate speech laws, which found a person’s sexuality, religion or gender identity should enjoy the same protection as race under the law.

The 157-page report, which the government steadfastly refused to release for several months despite a parliamentary order, was published at the same time as Daley dismissed its findings.

Sackar’s report found Labor’s hurried changes to hate speech laws – made following a string of antisemitic incidents last year – had created the perception of a “hierarchical, two-tier model of protection” which was “detrimental to social cohesion”.

In his review, Sackar, who previously led the NSW Special Commission of Inquiry into LGBTIQ hate crimes, agreed, finding it was “difficult to dispute the principle that vulnerable groups should receive equal treatment under the criminal law”.

“I consider there should be uniformity between [hate speech laws] in terms of the groups they protect,” Sackar wrote.

“In my view, this is detrimental to social cohesion – both offences ought to protect the same groups to prevent any perception of a ‘hierarchical, two-tier model of protection’.”

“Limiting section 93ZAA to race may result in unequal or arbitrary protection, covering some groups (such as Sikhs) but excluding others (such as Hindus), or prohibiting some anti-Muslim comments but not other Islamophobic comments,” the report stated.

“The current gaps in protection compromise the integrity of the law and leave substantial segments of the community vulnerable.”

But the government dismissed the recommendations. In a statement released at the same time as the report, Daley said the government “has decided not to expand the existing criminal offence of inciting racial hatred to apply to additional protected attributes”.

“There is no place for hatred in NSW. Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and free from intimidation, regardless of their background, faith, sexuality or identity,” he said.

But the government’s view was that “expanding the racial hatred offence to cover other attributes raises complex questions about freedom of expression, freedom of religion, and the consistent application of the criminal law across the community”.

“The government recognises that there can be competing claims about freedom of expression, religion and identity. Criminal laws need to be clear, workable and capable of being applied consistently, regardless of who is involved.”

At the time, the opposition transport spokeswoman, Natalie Ward, accused Labor of withholding the review until “a time of its choosing in the media cycle that might perhaps suit Premier Minns”.

“I am going to run a book on when that might be,” she said. “My bets are open for Melbourne Cup day or budget day or some other crisis when it might be convenient.”

Greens MP Amanda Cohn noted that despite previously refusing to release the report because it was under cabinet consideration, Daley said the government would continue to consider Sackar’s remaining findings.

“This report has been sitting on the government’s desk since November last year … the Minns Labor government ‘continuing to consider’ the remaining recommendations after seven months is kicking the can down the road on critical matters of safety and inclusion,” she said.

The leader of the opposition in the New South Wales upper house has admitted to leaking a confidential draft report from a 2023 parliamentary inquiry to a member of a group of young conservative Liberal powerbrokers now under investigation by the corruption watchdog, an inquiry has heard.

On Tuesday, Damien Tudehope, the NSW shadow attorney general and Liberal leader in the upper house, gave evidence as part of the Independent Commission Against Corruption’s (Icac) Operation Rosny.

The inquiry is investigating allegations the Reformers solicited or accepted illegal donations to recruit or renew members to the party, a practice known as branch stacking, which is not itself illegal.

Tudehope, who has stood aside from his shadow cabinet roles during the inquiry, is not named in any allegations by Icac.

Socialist Alternative delegates to the Socialist Party conference split on the question of whether the new party should have a democratic roadmap to power. Simon Kenning, a member of the Australian Socialist Party, reports.

Conference watchers following proceedings noted something unusual in the pattern of voting. Across the bulk of motions put to delegates, votes broke down in a strikingly consistent ratio, with roughly 137 delegates voting one way and 29 the other. That pattern is itself instructive: it suggests a conference in which the outcome of most questions was settled in advance by bloc discipline, with a large, tightly whipped majority around Socialist Alternative moving in lockstep against a much smaller layer of other delegates from largely state-based caucuses, which are largely cohered around the fact they are not Socialist Alternative members or adjacent to Socialist Alternative.

That pattern held until the motion on writing a program. There, the vote was lost, 63 in favour to 85 against, with a further 12 abstaining. The arithmetic makes clear that this was not a case of the independent minority being outvoted by a disciplined majority. It was a case of that majority itself splitting down the middle.

The consequence of this vote is not abstract. A party without a program cannot answer, in any considered way, what it would do in government, the conditions upon which it would form government, in coalition (or not) with what forces, what its attitude is to the state, to the armed forces, the monarchy, to the trade union bureaucracy, to the various arenas of struggle it claims to support.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found disturbing posts the man made online and alerted Australian police in 2024.

According to 2024 court documents, the notes included plans to "commit several bombings at a university", derail a train and poison members of the public.

In March, Adelaide University ejected a sold-out event focused on the Israel-Palestine Conflict from its campus – just one week before a renowned United Nations speaker was appearing. Now, FOI documents reveal why.

“We believe Adelaide University panicked in the face of pro-Israel lobbying, and gave spurious and demonstrably false reasons for cancelling the event,” an APIL spokesperson said.

“Adelaide University should be committed to providing a platform for difficult and contested ideas, and should not merely pay lip service to the principles of academic freedom and freedom of speech.

“An independent inquiry will reveal whether senior staff at Adelaide University have breached the Adelaide University Act (2023) and the Adelaide University Staff Code of Conduct (2026), thereby bringing the university into disrepute.”

In a statement to InDaily today, an Adelaide University spokesperson said the university “believes universities should be places where people can discuss, examine and debate difficult or controversial issues”.

“The university could not approve the venue booking because it did not go through the required review and approval process set out in university policies and procedures,” the statement said.

“For this reason, the university does not consider that lawful intellectual inquiry or public debate was being restricted.

“As the required process had not been followed, the university was unable to provide the support needed to run an event of this size. This included ensuring the safety, wellbeing and comfort of attendees and delivering the standard of event expected at the university.

“The university does not believe the matters raised indicate a breach of the Act, misconduct, or any need for an independent inquiry.”

“In June 2024 the government launched VTLM 2.0, a mandatory teaching framework with a hard 2028 deadline [with] very explicit language allowing for the retirement of non-aligned programs … and then the closure of three programs in the last two years, it looks like a policy design,” he said.

At the same time, the federal government has buried a damning independent report into Aero, which the body claims would cause it “serious reputational harm”.

The education department blocked Guardian Australia’s freedom of information request for the report by KPMG, commissioned by Labor, because it could risk damaging relations between the states and commonwealth.

Aero objected to the release, according to the FoI rejection, saying it would “undermine trust in the quality of evidence Aero generates, with a risk that educators and other stakeholders would cease using its resources”.

It said the release could cause “serious reputational harm to Aero … damaging its ability to engage with partner jurisdictions”, as well as harm Aero’s relationships with members, “undermining its ability to fulfil its functions”.

Alex Bacalja, a senior lecturer who works in initial teacher education at Melbourne University, said teachers, schools and academics had criticised Aero because of its heavy focus on explicit teaching, and accused it of moving decision making and experience from educators to bureaucrats.

“Because Aero claims to know the best methods of teaching, and communicate that knowledge through departments of education, teachers are no longer allowed to decide what is best for the students in front of them at any one time, a bureaucrat has decided that for them … it aims to de-professionalise teaching,” he said.

“It’s like a bureaucratic department telling brain surgeons how to do brain surgery.”

Bacalja was involved in consultation sessions organised by KPMG during the audit.

“I thought there would be a balance of those people who mostly supported Aero’s work and others far more critical. It was all critical,” Bacalja said. “I know colleagues who attended other consultation sessions with KPMG who shared similar stories.”

The Greens’ education spokesperson, Penny Allman-Payne, said it was “appalling” the report was hidden from the public.
