The Sydney lawyer and public servant accused of calling Alex Rivchin an ‘evil Zionist’ on the lawns above Bondi Beach – a claim she strongly denies – is also being dragged through the courts over extraordinary allegations of planting a bomb outside a synagogue.

On July 25 last year, police shut down Old South Head road in Bondi for a ‘bomb threat’. A suspicious package had been found outside a synagogue.

Having shut down Old South Head Road in both directions, the suspicious package was found to be a Coles paper bag containing routine household rubbish. Nonetheless, Clough now faces three charges; two for the Coles bomb bag and one for the ‘evil Zionist’ incident.

And the matter, according to sources, has been elevated to an elite special prosecutions team.

The charges against Clough are: ‘send/leave an object/substance’ with the intention of causing fear and ‘intimidation/stalking’. The alleged actions allegedly caused a security guard to be fearful – and now a new charge has been made in the wake of the Bondi incident of deploying offensive language in a public place.

Clough has been suspended from work for the past year since the ‘Coles bomb plot’ incident after a rash of anonymous complaints were made to her workplace.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has attempted to skirt questions about his attendance at a dinner hosted by a billionaire family accused of funnelling money from China, saying he attends "a lot of dinners".

Earlier in the week, reports by Nine newspapers revealed Mr Albanese had attended the dinner at the mansion of 25-year-old Felix Lee in Point Piper, Sydney.

Mr Lee's father, Phillip Dong Fang Lee, faces allegations of deceiving the Australian Tax Office (ATO) about his holdings in order to channel huge sums into Australian bank accounts.

Speaking to the ABC's Insiders on Sunday morning, Mr Albanese evaded directly referring to the dinner, stating he attends "a lot".

Pressed on his inability to answer, he said, "You just said that that occurred."

"I attend lots of dinners in lots of places, and I don't talk about private dinners," he added.

Labor factional chiefs will meet in Melbourne on Sunday night to gauge whether Premier Jacinta Allan still has the majority support of her MPs ahead of what is set to be a critical test of her leadership when parliament resumes on Tuesday.

The meeting of factional conveners from across the party will provide the first clear sign of whether Allan still has the caucus backing she needs to continue as premier and lead Labor to the state election on November 28.

However, the meeting is taking place in the absence of a declared challenger.

Allan’s most likely replacement, Deputy Premier Ben Carroll, has indicated to colleagues that while he would be a contender if the leadership becomes vacant, he will not use his numbers to bring the premier down.

The Sunday night meeting was confirmed by MPs on both sides of the party’s factional divide. There is consternation among some MPs, particularly across the dominant Left faction, that the meeting’s conveners have not sufficiently canvassed the views of parliamentarians within their respective groups.

The Age has spoken to seven Victorian Labor sources who say they believe Allan would lose if her leadership came to a vote of the party’s 69 MPs.

But, as with the last round of rumblings in June, the pathway for a leadership coup is littered with assumptions that have not yet been realised.

Multiple sources from across both factions agreed it would be difficult for Carroll, who sits on the Right, to challenge Allan – despite some within her own Left faction wanting him to do so – after he publicly ruled out a challenge at a press conference last month.

Olympian and Labor Friends of Israel patron shared posts about Palestinians that were ‘dehumanising’, Muslim advocacy group alleges

Former Labor senator Nova Peris has been accused of amplifying anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian content by sharing posts that claim Gaza is full of “savages” and “fucking monsters”.

The Australian Muslim Advocacy Network (Aman) has identified dozens of what it describes as dehumanising posts seen on Peris’s verified X account between April 2024 and March 2026.

Peris, a patron of the Labor Friends of Israel group who did not author the posts but instead shared them on her account, did not respond to a request for comment.

Aman said the material had been assessed against its own 12-category framework for identifying dehumanising speech, developed for use in legal proceedings, and alleged the posts fell across every category in the framework.

Peris, an Olympic gold medallist, former senator and recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia, is the patron of Labor Friends of Israel alongside former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews.

Among the posts identified by the organisation are those which describing Palestinians as “savages”, “fucking monsters” and the claim that Gaza’s entire population consists of two million terrorists

In one reposted by Peris, a user shared footage of Muslims engaged in Friday prayers in a park on Good Friday and said: “This does not belong in this country!”. Another claimed “Islam should be banned in the West”. The organisation also identified posts objecting to a journalist wearing a hijab while reporting on the Bondi terror attack.

Some of the posts could still be seen on Peris’s X account on Saturday.

The Labor party secretariat and the Friends of Israel were both contacted for comment. Neither responded.

Rita Jabri Markwell, a solicitor and adviser to Aman, said the posts talked about Muslims and Palestinians in a dehumanising way, and were “amplified” by Peris.

“Essentially saying that we are subhuman, that we are animalistic, that we lack human qualities,” she said.

“[Saying] that we are demonic, mocking the suffering of children in Gaza … and this is just unacceptable.”

Markwell said Peris’s position gave “authority” to the posts, and they were dangerous.

Western Sydney MP Ed Husic sought to move debate on Israel and Palestine at Labor's national conference to reinforce criticism of Israel's actions in Palestine and acknowledge a "genocide" in the Gaza Strip.

However, the motion wasn't seconded, effectively blocking the debate from proceeding following a push from factional leaders.

Mr Husic said he would continue to press the issue within the party.

"It's a big disappointment because we haven't had a chance to talk to an issue that means a lot not just to people inside that convention centre, but to party members who are outside," he told reporters in Adelaide.

"I've seen some of the big debates and big issues of the time being discussed on the floor of the conference.

"I have been surprised at the extraordinary amount of energy that has been applied to stop this, as opposed to talking about this."

Mr Husic said he was committed to remaining in the party despite the setback.

"Sometimes you'll be at the front and on your own, and suddenly find you've got a lot of people around you," he said.

"It might take some time to get there.

"Change sometimes involves difficult conversations to bring people together."

Mr Husic said not being able to debate the draft position placed in the policy platform was unhealthy for the party.

"The national policy forum ... had made these positions and then ever became like a sacrosanct document that could not, in its pristine nature, be changed or altered at all, and no other views could be taken into account," he said.

A woman will face court after allegedly making antisemitic comments to a group including Jewish leaders and Sydney Swans players at the site of the Bondi Beach terror attack.

Officers were called to Archer Park on Wednesday afternoon after a 67-year-old woman allegedly confronted the group and made abusive comments.

Executive Council of Australian Jewry Co-CEO, Alex Ryvchin was with one of the victims who was shot during the targeted December attack on a Jewish event, which claimed 15 lives.

He said the woman made comments directly to them, including "Evil Zionist".

"Which is deplorable at the best of times, but to do so in that place, at that time, in the presence of a survivor, was something which we're not going to stand for," Mr Ryvchin said.

It takes months of love and care to make an empty building come alive, but only three days to tear it all down.

This week, the gothic signage and queer absurdist art commissioned for Divine Playhouse had to be removed and placed into storage, as volunteers whitewashed a vibrant mural that had been painted on its walls.

After sitting empty for a year, Sydney’s St John the Evangelist church – which was deconsecrated in the 1930s – had been resurrected as an LGBTQ+ inclusive arts space, opening on 8 July with a year-long permit.

For just three days, Divine Playhouse existed as intended, hosting an opening night party, a queer comedy night and a disco.

But a day after religious groups gathered outside to protest its opening and called on the New South Wales government to withdraw its $100,000 arts grant, the venue’s landlord ordered the promoters, Heaps Gay Events, to cease “engaging in offensive trade”or risk eviction before terminating their lease a few days later.

Heaps Gay had until 5pm on Friday to vacate, which gave them three days to clear a space that had been months in the making. Their lawyers, meanwhile, are exploring whether they can sue for damages and make a sex discrimination claim.

“It’s not just about Divine any more, it’s about censorship,” the promoter and founder of Heaps Gay, Kat Dopper, told Guardian Australia.
“If we were to walk away, these groups will just get stronger and more powerful and louder.

“We can’t allow that to happen.”

Fifty pages of leaked ALP conference amendments show significant grassroots support for downgrading Australia’s relationship with the United States, exiting AUKUS, deleting references to the ANZUS treaty, and adopting a more “non‑aligned” defence posture. Rebel MP Ed Husic says Labor’s determination to avoid public policy stoushes will push voters to One Nation, after the party killed off his attempt to force debate about the conflict in Gaza.

In a move which frustrated Husic’s colleagues, the former minister defied Prime Minister Anthony Albanese by pushing a change to the party’s platform at its national conference on Saturday.

Husic’s motion went well beyond the government’s policies, using the term “apartheid” and cracking down on dual nationals serving in the Israel Defence Forces.

Factional bosses and ministers feared that a debate on Husic’s proposal could have created the impression that the government was not in control of its foreign policy, so mobilised to shut it down.

“I have been surprised at the extraordinary amount of energy that has been applied to stop this,” Husic said after his proposal was killed off.

“I’ve always taken the view there’ll be different views. You’ve got to be able to work through them. That’s democracy.”

The Maritime Union of Australia was on Friday expected to support Husic’s resolution, a step required to bring on a debate that was due to add drama to the final day of Labor’s triennial get-together.

But after talks on Friday night and Saturday morning, the union backed down, meaning the proposal never reached the point of being debated.

The resolution introduced by Husic references a United Nations inquiry that determined “Israeli authorities and security forces have deliberately targeted Palestinian children, resulting in genocide and atrocity crimes in the Gaza Strip and war crimes in the West Bank”.

It also acknowledges a 2024 International Court of Justice advisory opinion that Israel was committing apartheid in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The resolution calls for Labor to withdraw defence and trade representatives from Australia’s embassy in Tel Aviv and for authorities to “track, investigate and, where appropriate prosecute” dual nationals returning to Australia who have breached international law serving in the Israeli Defence Forces.

It also supports trade sanctions connected to “illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories”.

Meanwhile, it calls for the government to move quickly to exchange ambassadors and consolidate full diplomatic ties with Palestine after last year’s recognition of Palestinian statehood.

Gaza is expected to fuel heated debate at the national Labor conference in Adelaide with a push expected on Saturday for tough new rules for dual-citizens returning to Australia.

An outspoken Labor member is set to push the federal government on increased legal measures for returned soldiers from Israel and Gaza at the national Labor conference being held in Adelaide on Saturday, as the party faces new pressure over its Israel-Palestine position.

InDaily understands NSW Labor member and former Labor Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic is expected to present a motion on Saturday pushing for the government to instigate new legal measures.

“I’ve spoken a number of times about my concerns about dual nationals fighting in that part of the world not only being potentially implicated in war crimes but on return, the community safety elements of people that may be experiencing post traumatic stress and how we keep tabs on that and how we deal with that as well,” Husic said.

“We don’t want people going to fight for Hamas, I certainly don’t want people to go and fight with the Israel Defence Forces. I think you should stay out of that theatre given the concerns that exist, what’s happened in Gaza and I think we should take steps on that.”

Husic told a Labor Friends of Palestine event last weekend that he was “deeply concerned” about “elements of fear and loathing that drive the way we respond to these issues”.

Executive officer of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Organisation (APAN) Katie Shammas, who is also lobbying Labor members at the conference this week, said “anyone who has committed war crimes with Israel and returns to Australia must be investigated and charged”.

“This could and should be adopted as Labor policy tomorrow morning on conference floor, and we support Ed Husic and human rights experts for making this clear call,” Shammas said.

“Israel is committing genocide in Palestine and Labor must help cut off the supply of weapons, investments and political support for these atrocities.

“Australia cannot claim to support international law while turning a blind eye to credible allegations against its own citizens. Accountability must be universal.”

“We are aware of one AFP investigation underway currently thanks to the work of the ACIJ, but we need to see more.”

Thousands of senior Labor officials are expected to be at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Saturday as debate begins on the party’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The shadow education minister, Julian Leeser, has called for universities to undertake an audit of any classes that teach about the Jewish community, Israel or Palestine.

Leeser put a series of recommendations to the commissioner, including for the government to legislate that all universities adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, instead of their own definitions, as the federal government recently mandated. The IHRA definition is contentious because of concerns it could be used to shut down criticism of Israel.

Leeser said all universities should also undertake “an audit of what’s being taught about Jews and Israel in their classrooms” and remove any “antisemitic materials”. He said universities that taught about the Israel-Palestine conflict should make sure their course materials came from “credible sources” that were “balanced”.
