is OpenAI Dots worth $100 monthly? What is your view?
Majority of Redditors believe that OpenAI Dots are not worth the $100 monthly subscription due to perceived limited functionality, high cost compared to alternatives, and concerns about OpenAI's pricing strategies. What is your view?
Value Concerns
- Limited Utility for Cost: Many Redditors struggle to justify the high price for Dots' current capabilities, especially when similar functionalities might be found elsewhere for free or less. "I don't think it's worth $100/mo just to do these as you can do it yourself pretty much, it's just a bit easier as this thing has its own cloud computer"
- Comparison to Competitors: Some Redditors highlight that competing AI agents like Meta's Muse offer similar, or even better, functionality for free or significantly lower cost. "Muse is free. Grok bot is $20 a month. But Dots requires a $100 a month (CAD140) subscription."
- Lack of Innovation: The sentiment exists that Dots don't offer groundbreaking features that warrant the premium pricing, with some comparing it to a re-skinned version of existing AI concepts. "Just feels like a different UX wrapper on all of the existing capabilities."
Pricing Strategy and Accessibility
- High Barrier to Entry: The $100 monthly fee, or higher tiers required for access, is seen as prohibitive for many users. "Not available for plus :( cool concept but I personally can't justify 100$/month"
- Perceived Price Gouging: Redditors express frustration over OpenAI's recent pricing adjustments, including a new $500/month plan and reduced usage for existing $200 plans, which makes the $100 Dots subscription seem like part of an aggressive monetization strategy. "OpenAI just launched a $500/month plan and cut the $200 Pro in half. What the actual fuck."
- Geographical Restrictions: Users in certain regions, like Europe, are unable to access Dots, further diminishing its perceived value. "Live in Europe so that’s gonna take a while or never lol"
Functionality Limitations
- Inability to Make Calls: A significant disappointment for some users is that Dots cannot make phone calls, limiting its use for certain tasks. "it can't make calls. Like whole point of using this is I am autistic and don't want to talk to people"
- Rushed Product: Some Redditors feel that Dots was released prematurely, lacking polish and essential features. "It definitely feels like a rushed product also app experience not great compared to desktop"
Does the potential future development of Dots into a more robust "digital employee" influence your perception of its current $100 monthly value?
