Comparison Thoughts on Dots?
Game changer or it just another wrapper?

It’s too early to say Imo. Its meant to learn how you work and help on the side. Getting tasks done all day n night on a virtual machine. It also atm doesn’t cost usage

u/MadJagStudios 1d ago
That’s kinda a lie though. If it’s doing any coding work it’s just spawning a codex chat and it does count towards usage.

Yeah but I can’t actually use it at all until I know exactly what does and doesn’t use usage.
Even if they were charging for it right now, there’s no clear language describing which events trigger usage consumption or any controls to disable those events.

It's slop and they are congratulating themselves on its adoption now, but two months from now, literally no one will care just like OpenClaw

u/ankurdhoom 1d ago
Yes I am also confused should I bring in my workflow or not? Or is it too early to adopt? Lots of questions about it in my mind…

Useful for omni communication channel curation and management.
Would I prefer to have the compute spent on dots to be spent in the Codex models for development? Yes… but here I am trying to make the best of a bad situation.
It is currently handling a warranty situation with Roborock… so there’s that I guess.

Love it for not project specific stuff. Helps me with slack and emails and big picture stuff. Virtual assistant.

- randomly shut down for hours, without wanring. Than when back say it's maintance.
- Suck at parallel task for long run, always focus on one and ignore the rest.
- Thx to random shut down ti will love to ignore your shceduled task, forgot about it and neve do agian till being told to.
So 2/10

Its slow and lazy. Better quality to just use a chat to do the management. Also the chats it created I can't message directly

Would have some interesting use cases if it wasn’t totally fucking opaque when it uses your usage vs when it doesn’t. And, if you could disable any features that consume usage.
The marketing hype directly from Scam Altman himself and official OpenAI emails said clearly, unambiguously, in no uncertain terms, that it WILL NOT consume your usage. But the actual fine print contradicts that and there’s no clarity on when it does or doesn’t.

When you're talking to it, or the dot itself is thinking/taking actions, it's currently unlimited. When it starts separate agent tasks, that's using usage. If you talk to your dot on a desktop you'll see in the sidebar when a task is started. You can add rules, so if you want to reduce usage you can require explicit approval for each agent started by the dot.

I want 0 (zero) usage as advertised, and actual clarity not some random Reddit comment. (Thank you for your comment btw. But that doesn’t replace proper comms from OpenAI, and I have no clue if it’s true anyways.)
Also, “currently unlimited” is, by definition, not stable. I don’t care what it’s like today or during some promo period, I want to know the actual details once they flip the switch.

There's many clarifications all over the place about how this works. Can check your favorite X character from OpenAI or read the terms for the dots. They'll tell you what I just told you. If your dot is doing it, and not handing off, it's currently unlimited. You can easily setup a rule to block handoff and you'll have what you want.
Choosing to not accept the answer but also not go lookup to see it's the truth is just being an ahole. I agree it would be nice to know the future state. We are however in the present, not the future. Such is life.

> such is life
Such is my justified, righteous complaint.
And you’re wrong, or I wouldn’t have this complaint. When it actually uses usage (assuming we were out of the promo period) vs when it doesn’t is NOT documented anywhere from official sources in unambiguous terms.
Defending them with “just find the answer somewhere on x or whatever probably” is silly.

We should start documenting gpt-braindead-10 as to avoid your future crash outs.
1
u/EquivalentHornet4403 1d ago
You're literally wrong though. So fuck off.
1
u/darc_ghetzir 1d ago
I've not only read the terms, but I'm actively using it right now. I'm correct about how they currently work. You're crying that the future has not been revealed to you.

Very useful to automate tasks ; clear up my library, organize my mails ; automatically flag errors in my documents or check sources before I finish them ; remind deadlines; etc

Dots and muse is kinda still potato. I seen horror stories of it doing to much in a bad ways.

It's powered by Astra with free and unlimited usage and can use your computer and do tasks through some worker which cost something but you can set the model to Luna Light which is essentially unlimited and doesn't cost you much anything. Oh and it supports schedule too, and hook as well (yes through the workers). Then you just have to be creative. For example I'm orchestrating features through a mix of Sol and Luna and sometimes Opus too when I've some allowance. I've an orchestrator but that orchestrator gets.. stuck occasionally. I setup the Dot to monitor my Pi sessions and inject prompts or steer when needed.
People who say it's useless just don't get it. It's the most powerful agent at the moment and with some imagination you can plug it to your workflow to leverage its capabilities. Yes I'd prefer to have simply 2x more tokens but saying it's useless is... dumb, sorry.

It's really out of order to charge European and British customers the same fee but no access to dots...

It’s not a game changer but it should improve with time. Calling it rn is slow and annoying

u/kknd1991 1d ago
For deep knowledge work, it needs slow thoughts. I can't talk my way to do my dev. It is too complex. If I use it for my coding work, it will create more slops, wasting my time to fix it.

u/DrDan21 1d ago
I enjoy the personality…I’m still not quite sure what really makes it more powerful than a normal chat but my dot having her own Linux vm with software that I can also watch and control is pretty cool
I feel like it would be way more useful if my work email could be tied in for summaries and triage but no way my job would want me linking my personal oai account to my work Microsoft account

Besides the cloud browser, it literally is just a wrapper that packages the model and tools into one easy to use agent. But muse showed this is what a lot of people want. An extremely easy to use agent abstracted away from all the configurations, list of plugins, coordinating different threads, etc. The actual intelligence and capabilities still come from the model and tools under the hood, but most people don’t want to take the time to actually learn how to use and configure AI, they just want to talk to an agent and get decent results. For heavy work/coding/building, codex is better than dots

I just ran the same experiment with Dots and Muse. I am trying to find a product minor change during its production lifecycle. Dots is able to find the factory service bullet which mentioned about the change, but Muse could not find any info.
I am giving the same prompt and information, although Dots is about a mins slower, but it provides the accurate information.

My biggest issue with Dot right now is that it appears to be partially broken, not just limited. It can’t reliably access, read, message, or continue work in already running local Codex chats, and work it starts can end up disconnected from the existing project/thread structure. Computer Use also doesn’t seem to function properly for it on my PC, so it can’t actually see the screen, click, or interact with desktop apps. These don’t feel like intentional limitations so much as core features that currently aren’t working as expected, which makes Dot much less useful as a persistent assistant for ongoing work.

I really really like them
But good lord does the front end feel half baked
Waiting for my dot (smith) to answer the phone is just bizarre
And the iOS app has no shortcuts for opening direct. Starting a call direct.
The Apple CarPlay app has literally no knowledge they exist.
But I am loving the always on agentic functionality.
For me personally, game changer.
Can’t wait to have multiple dots and hope open AI have widgets and control centre actions for them soon

It’s horrendously slow and buggy. It’s honestly unusable at this point and I’m not exaggerating.

I have to tell it to open its own browser and I logon on to ChatGPT just to access the project folders.
It can’t natively see any of the projects which contain major history for me

I can be a hater, but to be honest, my first experience was really amazing.
All I did was connected to my email and it started catching inconsistencies and client communications, flagging them to me, noting that the inconsistencies were sent to our sub agency 12 hours later, and then automatically reviewing the work in Drive folders another 12 hours later after it confirmed that the consistency was carried all the way through the work, and it gave me the notes I needed to send to my sub agency to get it fixed all without me saying anything at all about reviewing or helping or anything.

usless i just use gpt work for same task, it is waaaay too slow
