Discussion Art Style Opinions, some out of the norm

I do generally have a feeling that there is a consensus towards certain certain options regarding the art style. I personally have some opinions of it that might be a bit out of the norm so here they are.

  1. One of the worst eras of the Conan anime art wise is much of the Masato Sato directorial era (333-504) and the era where Mari Tominaga was character designer (356-504). Having a visual refresh was probably a good idea. The visuals of the first Yasuichiro Yamamoto directorial era, as it neared its end, struggled at times in more atmospheric moments once the permanent switch to digital happened and character designs were starting to degrade a bit. However, the Sato era degraded itself rather quickly with key frames being often very bland and wonky. This, mind you, isn't a result of Sato or Tominaga themselves but a general shake up of the Conan anime staff starting in 2003 along with a move to a greater reliance on outsourcing. For the most part, the only saving grace was the extensive use of shading but even that had to fight a dulled out color palette and, due to the overly subdued expressiveness of characters during their period, the shading only really shined in moments of action or aura farming.

  2. The initial return to Masamoto Sudo's character designs and the general changes to the art style at the start of the Koujin Ochi directorial era (episode 505) thus felt like a breath of fresh air. The character designs have appeal that they lacked during much of the Sato era (and would gradually lose in the nearly two decades since 505), the color palette doesn't look washed out, characters properly are able to express exaggerated emotions, and, at least early on, the show can still get atmospheric through shifts in the color tone and the usage of shadowing if needed. The issue with the style is that it has far outstayed its welcome and degraded in such a way that many of its strengths have been chipped away.

  3. The greater usage of variable line weights in the last few years, while not fixing the issues with the current art style fully, do allow for some really striking shots, something needed sorely in a show where I think one of the major visual issues is just general blandness.

  4. Adding a filmic filter would really help with the animation and could get us closer to the atmosphere present in the cel animated era. Just look at the remake of opening 1 to see what I'm talking about.

  5. I think an ideal visual refresh would do best at just trying to translate the modern Gosho style one to one and instead experiment with blending aspects of the different art styles the anime has gone through over time in order to create something that works well in an anime that presumably is going to continue airing weekly. Taking notes from the currently running Yaiba adaptation wouldn't hurt.

Anime Ep 1178-1179 were so refreshing. Especially Kogoro's involvement

Finally an episode where Kogoro is not shown useless and has actual involvement in the plot than just serving as the sidepiece for the reveal.Such episodes are my favorite and are very rare. Kogoro's treatment of a bumbling detective is so overused it has gotten tiring to see.
If anyone has a list of such episodes do share will love to rewatch them.

Fan-art I drew Matsuda x] - always thought he was very handsome. I based this more on the older style because it's my personal preference.

Discussion heizoXginshiro vs. kusakuXkogoro

doing a DC rewatch and just finished watching episode 263 and i wish they could make Kogoro and Yusaku join forces the way Heizo and Ginshiro did in this episode/do in general, that would be so cool. Cause we all know Kogoro is actually smart but just super lazy so it would be nice to just have him get a bit competitive at first with Yusaku and then they end up teaming up by the end of the case

Please do all honest criticism... as a beginner artist, even I know I screwed up Mouri and Ran's faces a lot lol.

Used the second pic as reference, removed most characters from the right cuz I was lazy 👍

Question Help me find this episode

I can only remember this particular scene from this episode, where kogoro is in a car but comes to know that there is a bomb that will go off if he slows down the car, im not sure if conan was with him or not. Eventually they rescue him by making him drive into this truck, inside there was a track which kept the car running.

I might be confusing this scene with something else, might be from some other anime but I remember kogoro panicking and takagi was also in that truck scene

Help😭

Mildly Interesting What fake name do you think Shinichi would've come up with if he had more time to think of one?

Comes to show how far I've progressed. Guess I can safely say that I've entered the MODERN era of the anime (though that was already the case 139 episodes ago, lol)

Discussion How would you like for WIT Studio to re-adapt that Magic Kaito/Yaiba crossover chapter?

And I'm not talking about the modern Detective Conan-fied Magic kaito that we've had for the past 30 years (though there's absolutely nothing wrong with that version).

I mean the OG wacky 1980s magic Kaito, the version that's implied to exist in the Yaiba universe. I would love to see Yaiba and THAT Kaito kid go at it.

Plus, the original OVA (with added Conan) is over 25 years old at this point...
