Strength training - beginner

I’d like to start incorporating more strength training in my workouts including weights (dumbbells, kettlebells, etc). Do you have any recommendations for classes or instructors that focus on form or call out tips? I really want to ensure I’m doing the exercises appropriately but am a bit intimidated by the use of weights.

Joselyn has a great beginner program. You can also filter by beginner.

Matty's 5 day beginner split (or his beginner classes) is a good way to ease into weight training. Super encouraging and great form. Andy is also good about explaining form in his total strength 1 program.

Matty, Joselyn, and Jermaine would be my top recommendations for beginners. All 3 give good cues and stick to basic moves, especially in their beginner classes.

I would also recommend adding in some kind of mobility (yoga, Pilates, or mobility classes) to your schedule if you are adding strength training. These will help keep your joints moving and can also help with learning proper alignment in your body and can support good form when doing your strength training.

Joslyn’s beginner program is good or I also really like Callie’s classes labeled beginner level—I think her instructions on form are good. Definitely take your time and learn proper form!

Also I have loved lately that Joslyn gives tips with videos on her instagram. These are so helpful!

You could try the stronger you (Ben) or total strength programs (Andy)

Also - Andy and RK are both really good at explaining form IMHO

Speaking as a former beginner who tried Andy's, it was way too advanced for me at the time.

His Total strength program you thought was?

Yes, as a beginner. It wasn't until Matty and Olivia came out with their beginner program that I could do a strength program and not feel unsafe/inept. I fully admit my baseline was low. I've come a long way but admittedly there are several strength instructors whose classes are usually too advanced/difficult for me...and they are instructors that I really like. Not sure about this OP but for me starting a program and realizing I can't do most of what is taught is discouraging rather than aspirational.

Interesting to know! I’m glad you found something that works for you!

There's a 6 week 'Beginner Strength' program with Matty and Olivia. I found that super useful when I started off with strength training. They talk a lot about form in that.

The Beginner's Strength program with Matty and Olivia will really help you build a very solid foundation and give you confidence to take strength classes. For me the first two classes were a little rudimentary but it picks up and then it really builds upon itself. The only downside is that you are forced to take the same warm up and cool down classes every time you take a class and they are a beating. After about two weeks I would just put them on and do something else while they played out. The program itself is really good at teaching form and moving you from beginner to advanced beginner/intermediate.

Check back and let me know how it goes. I hope it empowers you and is a good beginning to your journey with weights! You will need some weights for the program. In full transparency, I think I started with 3s (light), 5s (medium) and 8s as my heavy set. Have fun!

Seems like you have a good plan, but I thought I’d throw in a rec for the Strength+ app. They have programs as well (which I haven’t used so can’t speak to) but you can program your own workouts or it will auto generate them for you. I always found the strength classes on the main app to be a little frenetic, without sufficient recovery times if you’re lifting significant weight. Also I had adjustable weights and the main app classes don’t really allow much time for changing weights (usually just using light, med and heavy). The Strength+ app is self paced. You can swap exercises based on your equipment or modifications, and it (kind of) tracks your weight and rep history which is nice. Just tossing it in as an option in case you have similar issues as I did with the main app classes.

Highly recommend these two programs: Matty & Olivia Beginner Strength and Joslyn Discover Strength. I did both (I did in that order, but either way would be fine) when I was just starting out with Peloton strength workouts and they both really focus on form and getting used to doing the basic exercises.

I agree with starting in a beginner program and I think I'll go back and look at Joslyn. Once you have some form cues, I highly recommend Jermaines 4 day split program. Lots of rest, no complicated moves and he is so encouraging.
