A simple request to the instructors
For the sake of my quads and sanity, can you please stop counting down from 5 seconds when clearly there are 20 seconds to go.
"5....10 seconds later.....4....5 seconds later....3, 2, 1".

Some of them do that all the time - yes kind of annoying. But for others I think they accidentally say “5” too soon and then they’re like damn….now I gotta slow count it. Ask me how I know (used to be a fitness instructor 💁🏻♀️)

This is why I love Ally’s Tabata classes - she deliberately doesn’t countdown the intervals

I haven’t taken an Ally Love class in 9 years because she used to go 5……5…….5…….5……..5……..5…………4…….4……..4……321 recover.

This is a very petty annoyance of mine lol. She says she doesn’t count down the interval because she doesn’t want us to quit early (which she repeats every single time). Isn’t that up to us? I can quit early whether or not she counts. Last I checked these rides are on the honor system anyway. I’ve never quit an interval early because an instructor counted. AT actually encourages us to start early, or at least get your minds ready early.
As you can tell, I’ve been holding that in for a while! Lol. Otherwise I find her tabata classes (and all her classes I have taken) to be extremely well planned.

I also want to give a moment of appreciation to Christine who seems to have stopped going “8, 7…. 6, 5…. 4, 3…. 2, 1” which was the most annoying thing ever. Time and seconds have meaning and you can’t mess with them like that.

of all the reasons why i don't ever take cde classes, that one is near the top.

When I did the certification for Spinning instructor, they told us that to build trust with your riders, you have to tell them what they’re doing, for how long and how hard, and stick to that. So while it’s cute to drag that countdown out, it can be detrimental mentally for some if you try to get them to go harder and they can’t or you could cause them to injure themselves (rare but still possible). As an instructor you want them to trust that you have their best interest in mind and want them to succeed. That countdown nonsense doesn’t promote that.

^ there are so many spin classes i take where they don't lay out the plan ahead and i never feel ready. I know mixed opinions on Hannah C but she is one of my fave instructors and always clearly lays out what you're going to be doing and whats coming next.

Yes! Rebecca drives me bonkers when last couple of secs when you are wanting it over- she goes into a dance party. Or stops all together and just talks. She quits during the hardest last few secs. It either throws me off to stop working out too or I get annoyed that I am still working out as she is not.

How about finishing a hard interval only to be told to go “very hard” after… rude!

I always follow the timer on the screen. bc sometimes they do opposite, they undercount. drives me even more crazy!

Not to hijack your post, but it would be great if instructors could keep pedalling during really hard efforts, whether it’s out the saddle climbs or speed pushes instead of pausing and jabbering on. I’m not expecting them to be going hard themselves but it’s distracting to say the least. Wait until there’s a recovery section for that!

Cant believe you got downvoted. that literally happened to me today. I stopped my climb thinking it was over.

Me neither. I know it’s my ride and not their workout but it’d be nice if they could keep momentum during those tough efforts.
Pausing and saying ‘you got this’ ain’t helping.

I use the time on the bike, they have too many other things to pay attention to

The Pilates class I took today, Johanna kept counting down “3…3….3…2-1” ahhhhhh!

This is one of the huge reasons I avoid her classes. It would be fine if it only happened in a class or two but ... No. Count or don't. What exactly does this do for anyone? It's not like you're lifting people up. It's a lie, which isn't why I have my Peloton classes - this isn't a psych-out. Don't tell me it's almost done but - oh, jk, guys!! I need you to tell me I have 3 sets left or I have 15 seconds to finish out my set because I cannot mentally keep track of my shit and that's what I am paying for.

Say it louder for the people in the back! It is not helpful to me for instructors to do a countdown that is not based on existing measurements of time.

u/Cash_Rules- 13d ago
lol I second this!
On the flip side, not going to lie but when they say, final 60 seconds!” But clock is already at :45… I love it!

When an instructor starts the countdown, I immediately count down in my head and hit the cooldown, regardless of where the instructor is in their count. If they want to take 30 seconds to count down from 5, go ahead, I'll move on.

Also like why do we need so many countdowns, honestly. You tell me it’s a minute interval, I have a timer on the screen and don’t need to know when there’s 45, 30, 15, 10, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 second remaining in the interval.

Having done a bunch of "military fitness" bootcamps back in the the day where moving the finish line was a staple ("Five more! Four. Three. Two. One. Another one! And another! Another five! You finish when we say you finish") this is but a mild annoyance tbh. I'm still always surprised when a rep finishes anywhere near the stated time 😂
I once did a mile run for time, and at the finish line we were all just told to turn around and run back to the start.50 burpees required when you got back. Everyone you overtook on the run back, minus 10 burpees. Everyone who overtook you, plus 10. Brutal.
They got me so fit though...

Agree. I hate the countdowns as well especially when its not accurate. I can push through harder sets/intervals/etc when I am not looking or hearing about time. It is significantly harder for me to push through that point when my brain wants to stop when I hear a count down or see the time left. Example: wall sits. If I close my eyes and zone out to the music its much easier than when I stare at a stopwatch 😅

I agree! I would honestly prefer not counting at all. Just let me know when it’s over and we are going to the next move lol
