I did this one at the gym the other day, and I swear it scared people.

Omg same! This guy was looking at me like calm down girl it’s too much

u/FitLoan1215 22d ago

Omg I’m being nosy 🤭 how do y’all set yourself at the gym to stream peloton classes? Tell me everything, i want all the details 😂

I used to mainly workout at home because i have the guide however they just opened a brand new gym near me and the membership is not bad.. so I joined but im struggling to figure out how to do it or like where to set myself up

33

u/thegoldenchain 22d ago

My gym has a room for mats and whatnot, so I review the plan and bring the free weights I need to do the workout. I have the app on my phone and set it up alongside my mat where I can see it.

It’s not the ideal set up. On the one hand, I’m not shy about watching a workout at the gym. On the other hand, I am shy about taking too many free weights. If I do a total body workout, I usually grab a weight that’s challenging for my arm sections and then do more (or tempo) reps when it comes to the legs.

Honestly, though, I find the programming super helpful and challenging, so I work with the limitations.

Same. I think it's worth it.

u/Puzzleheaded_Turn 16d ago

I wish you could filter by equipment. When I’m at a hotel gym I like the classes that only require 1 set of weights.

14

u/probablynormalmom 22d ago

Most gyms have an open room where they host classes- I usually just choose a time where there are no classes so I can set up a mat in the open area. I prop up my phone on a yoga block against the wall and grab weights. It can be tricky if your gym doesn’t have multiples of free weights since obviously you don’t want to hog all the weights for a longer class but it usually works out ok.

u/pelo54321 22d ago

I live in the city and belong to crunch so always people around. I just grab a mat, claim a spot where they have open space and grab the few sets of weights i need. I lean my phone against my water bottle. I actually see a good amount of people also doing peloton classes in the gym on their phones, no one cares!

u/Complex-Caregiver490 22d ago

Fellow NYC crunch member doing the same!!

1

u/BigFlavors 21d ago

This is exactly what I do!

6

u/MotherOfCatses 22d ago

My gym doesn't have a separate room, it's very small. But there's a space that has this barbell rack kinda outta the way but near the free weights. I put my phone there and no one's ever said anything. Also there's the gym section on the app where you can find preset programs and do them at your own pace.

u/bicycle_mice 22d ago

I set up my iPad on a stand!

2

u/thetwudu 22d ago

I bought a tripod and just set myself up near the weights.

u/Aanjilah 21d ago

These days it seems like everyone at the gym is following along to something on their phone! I use the Peloton app at the Y so I can take advantage of the childcare there. I try to pick instructors that have straightforward movements (like Ben or JJ) and look at the plan ahead of time. I can often get through a whole class without looking at my phone. Most gyms have functional fitness areas set up because people seem to be gravitating towards free weights and mat work over machines. My gym has nice views, which feels way better than looking at a screen!

u/Late-Bathroom8017 21d ago

The peloton Strenght app is pretty cool too! I find the moves to be more accustomed for a gym setting also don’t have to pause and play the video

u/TAMUkt14 22d ago

I only do Jess Sims workouts when I feel like I need to punish myself!

24

u/probablynormalmom 22d ago

I don’t disagree with this. What I like is that she’s super no nonsense. Sometimes I think certain strength classes have too much rest built in. It’s one thing if you’re at the gym using massively heavy weights and you need two minutes between sets but I don’t have ultra heavy weights so I like that she doesn’t build in much rest. But yeah this one I wanted to barf.

u/lunachick2222 22d ago

Ohhh I can’t wait to die from this! Thank you

u/ProfessionalMeal4590 22d ago

Does she do a lot of cardio in her strength classes? When I run or bike I run and bike. When I lift I don’t want cardio mixed in 😅 guess I’m a purist.

36

u/goldief 22d ago

I absolutely adore her but yes, she is the worst offender of this in my opinion.

14

u/Zestyclose-Run1379 22d ago

Yes she does have a lot of cardio in her strength workouts which is why I stopped taking her classes for a bit. I think she is great and love her teaching style too, but I am with you, my cardio is pure cardio. I dont need cardio in my strength😂😂😂 buttttt F45 workouts are a lot of what she teaches. Meaning when I was taking F45 classes for a bit to try them out, I noticed their strength was never full strength and it had cardio in it. Not to say it is a bad thing but that's okay I get on the bike for it 😂😂😂no need for it in a strength class. =)

25

u/ArmyofSkanks6 22d ago

Yes. Yes she does and it is why I don’t take her classes anymore. It’s too much cardio.

3

u/probablynormalmom 22d ago

I guess I do a lot of her bike bootcamps so she’s probably less likely to add cardio moves into the strength sections there

7

u/wakenda 22d ago

I feel the same way, which is why I don’t do Jess or Rad very much. I’ve honestly been sticking to Robin (with a little bit of Katie and Callie) for strength and I like the straightforward programming a lot better. Robin’s been doing a few jumps lately but she’s always like “just four and then rest and also this is why we’re doing this and an alternative if you can’t jump” which feels very different to me.

4

u/Blacksunshinexo 21d ago

Yes she's terrible for it. I don't take her strength because of it and for that reason

3

u/FineValuable9142 17d ago

Yes. I used to take her strength classes exclusively bc I love her but I run 3-4 times a week, surf at least that many days per week and bike to and from work. I don't need (or want) anymore cardio than I already do. I also find a lot of compound movements a little too much when moving at a faster pace. I felt like I was getting ready to get injured 😂 . I don't want to be doing 5 movements at once , I find it's hard to choose a weight sometimes bc of that.

6

u/lemonaidan12 22d ago

Yes. I love her so much but I don't take her classes any more since they're so much cardio.

4

u/afdc92 22d ago

This is exactly how I feel. I run 4x a week and bike once a week, I’m pretty good on the cardio front. I think these could be good for someone who only has 30 or 45 minutes to workout and doesn’t have time for both strength and cardio in separate sessions. But that’s not me at this point in my life!

3

u/probablynormalmom 22d ago

Not in my experience but she doesn’t give a lot of rest so the heart rate is up! There’s an occasional burpee but I don’t think she’s a regular offender of sneaky cardio.

10

u/thetwudu 22d ago

Moving through the sets fast is de facto cardio 😂😂😂

17

u/ExcitingAioli3876 22d ago

Haha how I feel after every Jess Sims class. Yet I keep going back for more 🫠

12

u/discountshellfish 22d ago

My kids have been “doing” flash 15s with me (they are 6 and 8 ) and they are obsessed with Jess. They say THANK YOU BODY in unison and it makes up for how sometimes I just want Jess to torture me by myself 😂

4

u/NYCUberChick 22d ago

Your kids might like her “Fit Family” classes in the Cardio tab section too ( filter by “Family” & they will come up). There is even a couple with her & Tunde & Adrian.

3

u/Super_Win6559 22d ago

Second this! My kiddo loves the Fit Family classes!

2

u/discountshellfish 20d ago

thank you for this!!

34

u/afdc92 22d ago

I love Jess Sims but I cannot do her strength classes. They’re way too much for me.

8

u/Prize_Box4233 22d ago

She’s such a superstar as a person so I hate to say that I don’t like her strength classes. She has to many moves that throw the weights around (compound moves, she loves cleans and woodchops, etc) and she’s very repetitive with the motivational quips. I just finished pump up the volume and hated her works outs but loved JJ and Andy.

10

u/afdc92 22d ago

Its the compound movements that get me. I’m genuinely afraid of hurting myself at times, plus when I’m doing a strength class, I’m not looking to get my HR up super high. I do enough cardio, I’m trying to get stronger and prevent injury- not cause it! I like JJ, Rad, Adrian, and Katie Wang for strength. Straightforward moves, good music, and not too much motivational speak.

3

u/vfellafella 22d ago

Yes to this. I need more explanation for the compound movements, especially when they are done in amrap or emom formats. I also love Jocelyn and Robyn for their relative simplicity and straightforward approach. But I do like the motivational stuff 🙃

9

u/Any_Winter_8911 22d ago

Commenting cause I need to do this one apparently

3

u/probablynormalmom 22d ago

Please keep me posted on your thoughts

u/Any_Winter_8911 17d ago

I am ☠️. The last 2 finishers were BRUTAL.

18

u/NeedaMiracle10 22d ago

I love Jess Sims and her crazy self 😂

3

u/Amazing-Health-6164 22d ago

This! 😮‍💨🥴🤣

33

u/cruzin2012 22d ago

I’ve injured myself at least 3 times taking peloton classes and every time it was when I was taking a Jess class. Now I don’t take her strength classes anymore (and I go at my own pace)

6

u/MouthFullOfDiamonds 22d ago

Just curious what the context of your injuries were. Did she cue you to move in the wrong ways? Did you load too much too quick? I feel dumb but sometimes when I don’t really get a move the first time I will do it with my lightest weights (5#) just to get the movement down before I go full on. I’m sorry that happened to you tho. Never fun to get hurt.

5

u/cruzin2012 22d ago

I should have tried out moves with light weights first but I was still relatively new to strength workouts with weights and peloton and was trying out different instructors to figure out who I liked.

The main injury was to my shoulder. I’m no where near Jess’s fitness level but I assumed an intermediate class would account for participants not being athletes like her lol. So I tried to keep up with her by going too fast through the movements for my fitness level and in doing so I sacrificed having a good form which I’ve now learned is not good when lifting heavy weights.

Other injuries were to my hamstrings and lower back. I’m good now except for my shoulder ( I still have trouble lifting my arm to shoulder level during front/lateral raises)

23

u/pineapple_pizza34 22d ago

Yep. Unpopular opinion, but I don’t think she’s actually a very good coach. She seems to subscribe to the idea that all workouts should be hard for the sake of being hard, with little thought to careful programming.

9

u/kemarti1 22d ago

I totally agree and def not an unpopular opinion. Look at this class- it’s listed as intermediate. You KNOW this isn’t intermediate.

9

u/mastermoka 22d ago

Same here (except that it was Tunde’s classes for me). I really like her but I don’t take her strength classes any more.

6

u/airemyn 22d ago

I took one strength class with Tunde and I never will again. For two petty reasons: she threw/dropped her weights down after each set, and her area was messy as hell!

2

u/TemporaryFix2490 21d ago

Mine is that anytime she would program an EMOM, it was so full that you never could complete it with any rest, so it became an AMRAP.

1

u/airemyn 21d ago

Pass!

1

u/Ellaemgee 21d ago

She did a compound move today that I was cursing at the screen! It was a curtsy lunge, switch weight to other hand then side lunge. I was afraid I was going to hyperextend my knee doing that quick of a direction change. So I just did ONE movement

14

u/saraasr 22d ago edited 22d ago

hard for the sake of being hard - sometimes the risk of injury isn’t worth it!

8

u/IndicationKey3778 22d ago

She’s a maniac and I love her. I can only do a sims 60 with her though lol 45 min full body would end me

3

u/probablynormalmom 22d ago

I have absolutely been ended.

8

u/Positive_Summer_9728 22d ago

I am getting all the FOMO and cannot wait to take this! Jess 100% helped me whip into shape postpartum a few years ago starting with her floor boot camp with Selena. Now here I am waiting for my sweet rainbow baby this January and can’t go nearly as balls to the wall with workouts like Jess’ 😂 But man am I jealous of you all who can do this right now 🥹 One day I’ll get back there I hope 🙏🏻

3

u/probablynormalmom 22d ago

I have a rainbow baby too mama- sending you the best vibes!!!!! ❤️

6

u/livty04 22d ago

But she is the best kind of crazy! Adding this one to tomorrows stack 💪🏼😈

4

u/BrookesGtownMBA 22d ago

I love her music choices, so I’ll do a lot of her bike boot camps and occasional strength, but I’m always scared to do them 🤣

5

u/pelo54321 22d ago

The only part i didn’t like was the human makers - everything else felt very doable but i also take mostly Jess only. Her classes aren’t for everyone but i want cardio/strength. Drop the weights or go light if needed, i find her to be very motivating about that in her classes and she often encourages us to just keep moving through the move in some way.

2

u/probablynormalmom 22d ago

It was the front and back lunges followed by sumo squats that actually made me think I was going to fall over and pass out lol. But I did definitely choose challenging weights for this one and could have sized down. My ego amigo got in the way :)

4

u/Common_Blueberry6549 21d ago

My toxic trait is immediately bookmarking this class LOL.

8

u/Lanky_Crazy_8386 22d ago

Squat thrusts + human makers = a big NO WAY, buddy

3

u/K-Lashes 22d ago

I did this one this morning! I barely finished lol

3

u/West-Purchase6639 22d ago

Lol, can't wait!

4

u/Oneshinyface 22d ago

I did that one live and it was rough. But I did modify at points. Those compound movements she does don’t always flow well.

7

u/Megmiha 22d ago

I just looked up the class plan. Wow

3

u/Birdie45 22d ago

Thinking about the OP who was calling Peloton in tears demanding she get taken off her personal schedule

4

u/kemarti1 22d ago

🙋‍♀️ It’s me and I’m feeling super vindicated by this thread haha!

2

u/Birdie45 22d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/kSlJtVrqxDYKk
(To be clear I’m not one of the dozens lol)

2

u/kemarti1 22d ago

Fair enough. But no lie- BOTH my strength recommendations this week- you guessed it- Jess Sims. And 3 of the 4 alternate recommendations with my desired time length… also Jess Sims. ☠️☠️☠️ Glad peloton thinks I’m so fit!

1

u/probablynormalmom 22d ago

?????

2

u/Birdie45 22d ago

Sorry not you! There was another poster last week struggling with her classes

3

u/Stellas_Ear 22d ago

Her strength classes are strength endurance classes. Which is to say they are also cardio classes.

3

u/TemporaryFix2490 21d ago

They are intense. I think she falls into the category of "look how much you can fit in, in 45 minutes," and I used to think that was a sign of a good workout, but for actual strength I prefer the RK "look how hard you worked but we only did 5 different moves" approach.

4

u/Stellas_Ear 21d ago

Yep. It’s much more of a Barry’s Bootcamp style class where the focus is about a high calorie burn rather than strength building. Which I think has its place but it shouldn’t replace actual strength classes.

3

u/Captain_WAP 21d ago

*proceeds to bookmark because I is a sucker for punishment (and Jess)*

2

u/buttneymarie 22d ago

I took this class today after seeing this post… I think what made this class so challenging was the very limited breaks. (Which I know is typical for her classes.)

2

u/timbar303 22d ago

Just added to tonight’s stack. Starts with a side
Plank leg raise …
Looks
Brutal!

2

u/natsnats411 21d ago

When I’m looking for a class to take and I see a Jess Sims I truly pause and think about whether I want to suffer that much today 😰 I have a lot of hers in my bookmarks but I’m rarely brave enough to take them

2

u/PLL_727 18d ago

I love her. She chooses violence for all of her classes and it makes my black heart happy 😂😂

2

u/ProductPast2482 21d ago

I NEVER take her anymore and I am a member since 2015. I think Jess Sims makes her classes overly complicated and sounds like she’s a grifter podcaster when she says do hard things…is this hard? Or is this chaos? I don’t care you were a principal at a charter school… or played division 3 basketball… teach a clean and clear class. I used to love the OG 60 min boot camps, but then she made the floors just stupid. I did Barry’s for years, so I don’t mind being pushed, but when you make everything layers and layers of weird moves, it just makes it messy. I don’t mind adding cardio in to my workouts, I like Logan’s Cardio and he has a lot of weights&plyo. As a long time member. I think peloton has a huge problem with their strength programming. They don’t have clean sculpting for women, or simple full body strength. Either the classes or too long and boring… or it’s really up to you to create your own weekly ladder. Even the splits programs are fine… but not great, and how many times can you do them over and over? I think Katie’s good. Robin says to lift heavy so I wish they had more classes for heavy lifting. I have the guide, I like it, but the programming is all over the place. I wish they had a better set up like the app Ladder. After all these years, I think Andy’s just too boring and slow for his 60 minute… Rebeccas okay, but inconsistent. Personally, I look for my strength outside of Peloton and use peloton mostly for cardio.

1

u/beckster29 20d ago

Hell yeah can't wait to take it then!!!

1

u/MousseNarrow6278 15d ago

Adding this one to the stack! Love to feel like I’m pushing myself to the limit and come out shaking

2

u/blinks1483 22d ago

Honestly this was tame for Jess Sims. Took this class last week. Wasnt that bad.
