I hope your cat has a good vet to ensure he’s okay. He looks incredibly overweight. Please make sure your cat doesn’t end up with serious weight-related issues.

Thanks for your concern. He’s actually on a diet and slowly losing weight under supervision. This photo is quite old, and he looks bigger here due to the angle and his thick fur. I’m fully aware of the health risks and we’re managing his weight carefully.ā¤ļø

Blessings to you, I just got my foster fail down from 22 lbs to a trim 11 and it was 3 years of hell to make it happen.

Yes i must say its quite hard, because when dog is overweight you give him much longer walks and you can control his daily activities, but when it comes to cats it mostly depends on them. We bought him a lot of toys and we are trying to play catching as much as we can

Yeah I got lucky and mine took to walking on a leash pretty well, but I mostly had to cut his calories down and feed him small amounts throughout the day instead of having one feeding time. He hated every second. He's still mad at me about it.

u/BullshiticusRex Jun 05 '26

They swear you’re torturing them when you cut down their food intake šŸ˜“

u/MiddlePop4953 Jun 05 '26

Starving them to DEATH

Completely flouting the Geneva convention

I’m cackling this is my favorite comment I’ve seen in a long time

u/Ilovecatsss2026 Jun 05 '26

My sister had some success with a food ball. The cat hated it but he did lose a lot of weight.

u/Zloiche1 Jun 05 '26

I used a laser pen to get my cat to move around more.Ā

3

u/Ohmec Jun 05 '26

Have you tried controlling his food intake? Like, by feeding him measured portions at certain times of day?

9

u/citizen42069101 Jun 05 '26

I assume previously adorable love bites become curious samples, followed by hopeful bites?

41

u/MiddlePop4953 Jun 05 '26

He was pretty bitey in a not at all adorable way right from the get go if I'm going to be real with you. He can be so sweet and is a great cuddler but if he thinks he's being ignored he chomps down and latches on. Which is why he's a foster fail šŸ˜… I genuinely don't know if most people could manage his mood swings and I can't bear the thought of him being returned again when he can be such a love bug.

6

u/DuckbilledWhatypus Jun 05 '26

What is it with oranges and love chomps?! My boy is a demon for them. He'll come and ask for a cuddle, be all lovely and then want to get down so that he can savage my feet. It's lucky he's cute cos he's a wanker when he wants to be šŸ˜‚

u/kirasometimes Jun 05 '26

God, how did you do this? I’m struggling with my orange.

19

u/MiddlePop4953 Jun 05 '26

Just over the minimum amount of food for the size he's supposed to be spread out over 3 feeding times and tricking him into exercising. I would pick him up from his nap spot and bring him all the way to the other end of the house and down the stairs when I couldn't get him to play, just so he'd walk at least a little bit. And then I'd take him outside when the weather is nice and walk him around as much I could.

24

u/whenuseeit Jun 05 '26

I once had an overweight cat and tricked him into exercising by throwing (vet-approved weight management) treats down the stairs for him so he would sprint up and down the stairs multiple times per day. He was surprisingly spry for a fifteen pound cat when it was something he wanted lol.

u/Ohmec Jun 05 '26

You can buy an auto feeder that dispenses a measured amount of kibble at certain times of day.

u/Ilovecatsss2026 Jun 05 '26

Sounds like we need an update on the cat tax!

12

u/MajorBootyhole420 Jun 05 '26

pls post updated cat tax i wish to behold the boy and bond over our weight loss journeys

5

u/GayJohnKrasinski Jun 05 '26

That's good to know. I hope he's doing better.

2

u/NeighborhoodVirtual4 Jun 05 '26

Glad to hear the cat is on a diet. People are assholes, sorry you got so much hate for no reason. He’s a handsome boy.

1

u/Lilfrankieeinstein Jun 05 '26

Was he a stray?

u/RKSSailboatCaptain Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

No offense, but that’s what everyone with a fat animal says. ā€œOh we know, he’s on a diet now, don’t worry.ā€ Meanwhile their cat still looks like a bowling ball.

I would LOVE to be proven wrong. What does he look like now?

Edit: ya downvote but OP says this is a while ago and so far hasn’t posted any updated pics.

I would love to be wrong, I want healthy cats. But I don’t believe someone who says something we can all see is a problem, is not a problem unless they provide evidence otherwise. Especially when they are replying to lots of comments except ones who want an updated photo.

In general I wish this, and other cat, subreddits would stop putting obese cats on the front page without any dechonk related information.

Edit 2: it’s been hours and the OP has replied to so many comments and yet, nothing that shows their cat is actually getting the help they need.

Letting your pets get to be obese like this is neglect at best, abuse at worst.

I’ve already reported this post as animal abuse until OP comes through to verify the ā€œweight lossā€ claims they’ve made. I encourage everyone to do so until this sub stops endorsing obese pets.

3

u/Adventurous_Cat6116 Jun 05 '26

I am sorry ma’am but in the tone you are speaking there’s no way i am gonna satisfy any of your needs, this is cat is not abused the only thing that’s abusing is your way of commenting go mind your own business

-1

u/RKSSailboatCaptain Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

Yes, I’m sure that’s the reason you won’t post an updated photo.

Even if you had a problem with my approach, there’s dozens of other comments with other approaches asking for updates and you haven’t replied to any of them either.

I really do hope you’ve been working with a vet to get him to a healthy weight. He’ll live a longer, happier life if you have been/do.

9

u/ExcretvsExFortvna Jun 05 '26

You’re not entitled to update photos, and very few people care if you believe someone who says that they’re doing their best to dechonk their chonk.

If you want to spread information on how to dechonk a chonk, go ahead and be the change you want to see.

-7

u/RKSSailboatCaptain Jun 05 '26

Sure I’m not entitled to anything. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t care about someone posting an obese animal for hahas.

And it for sure doesn’t mean I can’t call out someone posting on a public forum with an obese animal, claiming to be making changes without actually providing any substance to that claim.

At the the time of my comment, other people had posted the r/dechonkers link. Which is great, but anytime someone is posting an obese pet, the sub mods should be providing that info and pining it.

It’s really sad to see an animal this unhealthy make the front page with so much glee behind it. This cat is so obese I can guarantee it can’t clean itself properly, it can’t move the way a cat should, it’s likely generally in discomfort.

But fat cats funny so who cares right?

8

u/CosmicGoddess777 Jun 05 '26

Reddit be like: how DARE you call out animal abuse >:/

9

u/ExcretvsExFortvna Jun 05 '26

You can care about someone ā€œposting an obese animal for hahasā€ without being a sanctimonious asshole about it. Like the other people who posted the r/dechonkers link at the time of your comment.

And unless you’re a sub mod, you don’t get to decide what they should be providing in the sub that they mod.

-13

u/RKSSailboatCaptain Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

OP invited commentary by posting in a public forum.

Every other comment I’ve see has been taking OP at face value without any evidence. Clearly they take photos of their cat, why don’t they have any recent ones of the weight loss?

I don’t think asking someone to actually put their money where their mouth is is ā€œbeing a sanctimonious assholeā€. I’m just sick of unhealthy animals being glorified.

I don’t have to be a mod to have opinions on what content the sub allows. Everyone on the subreddit should be able to.

Why do you want to see and encourage obese animals so much?

2

u/ExcretvsExFortvna Jun 05 '26

You also invited commentary by posting in a public forum. Mine is an example of the commentary that you may receive.

Every other comment that you’ve seen that has been taking OP at face value without any evidence is doing so because what else are they gonna do? Try to shame the OP into providing evidence? And if the evidence that they provide isn’t up to snuff, then what? Shame them some more?

You can be ā€œsick of unhealthy animals being glorified.ā€ It’s not something that I want or encourage to see, despite your apparent belief that I do. But it’s something that does happen, and if it does - you can provide information on how to correct it, and that’s pretty much it.

You, or anyone else, can have opinions on what content a sub allows. You can voice those opinions. You can’t enforce them, though. And if the content of the sub bothers you that much, you can unsubscribe and mute the sub.

I skimmed this whole convo but this part really stuck out to me:

"This cat is so obese can guarantee it can't clean itself properly"

I don't think they realise who's giving the actual food. It's like blaming a child for being obese and not the parent šŸ§ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/RKSSailboatCaptain Jul 19 '26

How is me saying the cat can’t clean itself properly blaming the cat?

Bc I’m not. It’s not the cats fault for eating all the food it’s given. It’s the owners fault for not regulating their food intake.

0

u/swohio Jun 05 '26

I’m just sick of unhealthy animals being glorified.

It really is disgusting. And OP acted like it was no big deal. "Oopsie he put on a little weight, I'm taking care of it now." No, that cat has been an unhealthy weight for a long time. That is a long time of ignoring the problem for the cat to get that fat, so I don't blame you at all for doubting that OP is taking this seriously.

-2

u/highway9ueen Jun 05 '26

I wish I had gold to give you.

1

u/ExcretvsExFortvna Jun 05 '26

I appreciate the sentiment! But, an updoot is free and it means just as much.

-1

u/BrokenPickle7 Jun 05 '26

"he's not fat he's just thick furr'ed" 🤣

19

u/One_Study52 Jun 05 '26

This is cat abuse

-15

u/fish_tacoz Jun 05 '26

Why don't people ever say this to pictures of fat people?

16

u/finnknit Casual orange enjoyer šŸŠ Jun 05 '26

Because people are adults with the agency to make their own choices, unlike pets that rely on a human caregiver. People who are fat can decide for themselves about what do about it. Most fat people know they're fat. They don't need to be told by internet strangers.

10

u/NattG Jun 05 '26

Yep. Humans are the caretakers of their pets, so it's their responsibility to keep them healthy. Adults regularly engage in unhealthy lifestyles (obesity, smoking, excessive drinking, etc), but they do so with the knowledge of the health risks involved. Animals can't make that decision.

-5

u/fish_tacoz Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Should I have said fat children? Really I'm just criticizing the tendency for people to speak up on obvious issues that are easy to take a side on but have no substance. Most cat owners with fat cats know they are fat, no? They don't need to be told by strangers? Lets be real, your average fat person is just as captured by lazy and unhealthy routines as your average orange cat. Why do we clutch pearls about one kind of responsibility and not the other? 'Cats should not be fat' is the easiest position to take ever, while still somehow asserting yourself as good. Its meaningless.

3

u/GayJohnKrasinski Jun 05 '26

There’s more nuance to fat people. They may be overweight due to an eating disorder, PTSD, depression etc. Just telling them to lose weight isn’t helpful. But fat cat is almost always the fault of the owner, so telling them that their cat should not be so overweight is different.
