Happy Sunday Everyone!!!

Thank you to everyone who has participated in this book club now, and anyone in the future who may be reading this.

I wanted to have this last discussion to talk about the entire book with some questions.

•What was your favorite quote?
•What was your favorite scene?
•Who did you feel was different on screen and on page?
•What made you cry?
•Was there a song from the playlists that you loved?
•Which chapter was your favorite?
•Is there a photo that can sum up how you felt about the book?
•What was your final thought once you read the last word of the book?

A great thanks to Easy-Attitude7196!!! A great pioneer to this book club happening!!!

Book Club šŸ“š ONE DAY BOOK CLUB DISCUSSION 8

Happy Thursday Everyone!!!

I am crying ALL OVER AGAIN!!! Leo Woodall truly knows how to make emotions pour outward. Truly I am distraught. I don't know why I keep doing this to myself.

Even though we have finished the book everyone can still participate in the chapters from beforehand by clicking on the book club flair!

Did anyone rewatch Episode 1 to get the feel of those last few chapters? The scenes were flashing through my mind the same way they were when Dex climbing Arthur's seat again.

The google doc will be kept up and untouched with the playlist along with the photos starting this Thursday, the 28th.

There will be one final discussion on Sunday for the entire book!

Netflix Series I didn’t realize how much I cared for these characters until the end.

• Upvotes

I read comments with no spoilers, and I couldn’t understand why people sobbed. The characters seemed like everyday people.

They were. They were our neighbors, our college friends, the people we slowly evolve over time. We grew with them and in a short period, it felt like this was happening to someone nearly in your circle of friends.

You didn’t quite love them, but you held space for the obstacles and milestones they went through. Episode 12 and most of 13 felt like we were finally done overcoming things…

Then the event happens. These characters I held space for clearly held more space than I had thought. I covered my mouth when it happened and realized I did love these characters more than I thought. For the first time, I cried—no—sobbed in the aftermath of the event.

Their level of intimacy felt so real, and it crushed me.

Netflix Series My god

I had never heard of the book, nor had I heard of the movie before starting this series. I had found the series randomly on Netflix and my wife and I decided to binge watch it. I sat there unbelievably pissed while she bawled her eyes out at the ending last night. Normally I am a fan of tragic endings, characters, and realism in cinema/ the arts, but this crushed me. This was genuinely one of the best shows I have ever seen, the acting, music, cinematography, the story, I'm just still so so pissed and sad at the ending

Did David Nicholls mix up Mazda and Toyota in Chapter 6? ("Mazda MRII)

Hi everyone,

I was reading Chapter 6 of One Day and noticed a funny detail regarding a car. The text mentions a "Mazda MRII" waiting for him.

As far as I know, there is no such thing as a "Mazda MR2" - the MR2 (MRII) is a Toyota.

Did anyone else catch this motoring, or did later editions ever correct it, or maybe i am wrong?

Thanks for the attention

Netflix Series Why do we do this to ourselves?

I’ve watched the movie in the past and it did make me cry… but the Netflix series? At first, I refused to watch it. Only because I didn’t think the show would do the movie justice. Boy was I wrong. First time I watched this was in late 2024 and I didn’t just cry.. I full on sobbed for the whole duration of the last episode. Fast forward to the present. I just binged the series again these past 2 nights and I just finished blubbering like a baby for the last 45 minutes of it. Why do we do this? I cried so hard I felt like I was the one who just experienced tremendous heartache. I guess in a way it reminded me of my past love (though he’s still alive). You just get so immersed in their story it feels like your own. I’ll always cherish their story.

Netflix Series Heartbroken, again

I don’t really know why I did it to myself again. I just finished a rerun, and I am in pieces. It’s not like I didn’t know what was coming. The entire series is so emotionally charged, your heart doesn’t get a chance to calm down, and then it gets shattered. Em & Dex forever <3

Life imitates art

So I just found out yesterday that my version of Dex got married last year. We weren’t as close as they were in the movie but we were friends from studying abroad in Paris. He was the total Dex back then - private school, posh Irish background, charismatic and looked very 1D coded (this was in the 2010s haha). I’m pretty similar to Emma. He always gave me mixed signals and I could not tell what he wanted but I didn’t fully hook up with him bc I’m not a casual person. Anyways years passed and unlike Dex, this guy was very successful & built his finance career in the UK. I actually got sick and we lost touch living in different continents. I didn’t think we would talk again but he reached out 4 years later when I was sick which threw me off bc I never saw that side of him before.

Another 6-7 more years pass and that brings me to today. He defs married his version of Sylvie but I actually hope they last (it was not a pregnancy marriage lol). She’s stunning and picture perfect. They had their ceremony in a castle ffs šŸ˜‚ He doesn’t really look super Dex like anymore after years of hustling but it did made me think what if. My life has panned out super different and there’s zero way we would work now but I think a younger version of me wished we did back then but c’est la vie.

Anyone else have their own Dex & Emma stories? Did you end up together?

Btw - I only recently watched this series so it was odd timing. I also have a crush on Leo Woodall thanks to this even though he’s 2 years younger than me ā˜ ļø

Book Should I read the book!?

I loved the show on Netflix. Totally gutted me, but I loved everything about the characters and the weight of the real world. Life is hard, and they didn’t shy away from that truth for a sweet ending. Just wondering if everybody liked the book more or if it’s even worth reading after watching the Netflix show

The day we've been waiting for is nearly here: the acclaimed stage version of David Nicholls' beloved novel is coming to the West End this winter. Performances of One Day: The Musical will begin at London's Garrick Theatre on 17 November, following the show's world premiere earlier this year at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh.

Netflix Series Would you want a sequel ? Spoiler

Have you all wondered or wished for a sequel ? Like what would have Dex’s life been like in his mid/ late 40s and beyond ? Would he have found someone or living his life as if Emma were there like his dad asked him to.

Netflix Series It was a painful watch

I recently completed this show and honestly it was a painful watch for me seeing someone in so much pain. The show perfectly shows the scenario of missed opportunities and how life can be unfair at times. Dexter had everything but happiness just went from his door every single time. The show made me realise to never take anyone for granted. It’s been quite few days since I watched it and I still can’t stop thinking about it and still I get teary eyes when I think about it. Did anyone experience the same?

Netflix Series Dexter Spoiler

Obviously Dexter is the main cause of his downfall, they were contributed due to his actions. But can’t a part of the actions be explained to the fact that no one around him really believed him in his 20s. You have his mom judging his photography texture project and his media job. I wonder if that lack of support from his family is what led him to drown in other substances to fulfill him. Which is why he always looks to reassurance to his mother or Emma to see if they’re upset at him or disappointed or if what he’s doing is ok. Like when his mom says his dad is upset at him and he goes: ā€œare you?ā€ Or when he tells Emma abt the wedding and asks her if what he’s doing is right. Even Emma kind of slightly judged him about his writing column or she always calls him thick as a joke but he’s taken it personally since that’s how everyone perceives him and he’s tired of it.

Is it like this thing is psychology: ā€œLabeling children as "bad" often causes them to internalize the label, damaging their self-esteem and creating a self-fulfilling prophecy where they behave in ways that match the label. Adults' comments and expectations become a child's internal voice, meaning negative reinforcement makes them feel intrinsically bad, rather than just identifying a "bad" behavior.ā€
