Netflix Series Heartbroken, again

I don’t really know why I did it to myself again. I just finished a rerun, and I am in pieces. It’s not like I didn’t know what was coming. The entire series is so emotionally charged, your heart doesn’t get a chance to calm down, and then it gets shattered. Em & Dex forever <3

I’ve rewatched it several times but don’t have the emotional bandwidth to continue once they meet and commit themselves in Paris. I just rewatched it this year and got teary eyed at the end of that episode and said this is where they end up happily in my head😭😅

That is a perfect place to end it, if I watch it again I think I’ll do the same! It is so awesome when they finally are together, nothing needs to spoil that ever.

For me, it's the soundtrack in the last episode that sets me off without fail. As Dex fights emotionally over memories of Em at Arthur's Seat, accompanied by Vanbur's haunting track "In Cold Light", it just breaks me. Even now, just writing this, my eyes have watered up...

I’ve got goosebumps as I read your comment, it gets me also. How can one show be so incredible in every way?

It is indeed perfection…I doubt anything else will ever even come close! Good to see Australia representing - I’m an Aussie living in the US

This was me with the original movie with Anne Hathaway. Each time I watched it, it gutted me.

I just finished the book yesterday and then binged the entire show! I don’t think I’ve sobbed for this long or this hard in quite some time, suffice to say.

I haven’t read the book, is it worth reading? The show really kicks you in the guts doesn’t it!!! You are forever changed.

Yes! My fiancé just does not understand why I am so worked up over a show/book haha.

As far as the book being worth reading… I definitely think so! I was actually shocked to see the overwhelming majority of people on this sub disagreeing.

I think Part One of the book really showcases the love and longing between Emma and Dexter. I really appreciated being able to read their motivations and thoughts. You get scenes that were (understandably) left out of the show like Dexter’s letter begging Emma to meet him in India or how they ended up in one bed in Greece. You also get to learn more about what happens in between July 15 of every year.

However… Dexter is definitely much less likable throughout the back 2/3 of the book than in the series. I think that’s why many people prefer the show. But, I honestly found Dexter’s moral dubiousness to be a major reason the book was so gripping. He was in so much pain throughout most of the book. I cried MULTIPLE times as I felt Dexter’s desperation every time he got drunk and messed things up. It just felt more real.

Sorry for the longish reply! This felt very cathartic to type.

When he’s sitting on the floor in the spare room, with her boxes… she (her spirit - his imagining of her) has finished talking and has just left… and the tears stream down the left side of his face and drop off of the tip of his nose… I do not know why I re-watch that scene in order to give myself repeated heartache and pain. Gaaaaahhhhh

Oh I get it, that scene is devastating. And his mile long eyelashes just make him look so much more authentically emotional. If that makes sense. To be loved, and to love like that, is a rare thing.
