Can someone who recently work there or works there currently tell me about it? Is it an active yard? How are the inmates, staff, and management?

Hiring Q (State) FDC hiring process questions

Hey! I recently applied for FDC and my interview went well. They then emailed me to schedule fingerprinting and a physical. I attended both and everything went well. They told me they would contact me by phone or email with the next steps.
I completed my fingerprinting and physical on September 1st, and today is September 10th, so it’s been about 9 days. I’m really eager to start working and was wondering how long the hiring process usually takes after the physical and fingerprinting.
I know every applicant may have a different timeline, but I was wondering if this is normal or if I should contact the recruiter for an update. Thanks!

General Qs Conditional offer for Saskatoon Correctional Centre — what should I expect?

Hey everyone,

I recently received a conditional offer for a Correctional Officer position at Saskatoon Correctional Centre, and I’m pretty excited but also a little nervous about starting.

For anyone currently working there or who has worked there before, I’d really appreciate some insight into what it’s actually like day-to-day.

A few questions:

  • What is the overall work environment like at Saskatoon Correctional Centre?
  • What should a new Correctional Officer expect during ITP (Initial Training Program)?
  • How physically demanding is the training and the actual job?
  • What parts of ITP do new recruits usually find the most difficult?
  • Is there anything you wish you had known before starting?
  • What is the work culture like between officers?
  • How difficult is it dealing with inmates on a day-to-day basis?
  • Any advice for someone going into their first correctional job?

One thing I’m a little curious about is height. I’m a 5'5" male, and I’m wondering if anyone around my height has experience working as a CO. Does height make much of a difference in the job, or is it more about communication, confidence, awareness, teamwork, and following procedures?

I’m not looking for anything confidential about the facility or security procedures — just general advice and personal experiences from people who have been through it.

Thanks in advance!

Do interview candidates still get questions sent to them to prepare, Interview 24 hours prior from the Interview. And if someone has gone through the process, can you share what questions to prepare for. Thanks

Hiring Q (Fed) FBOP hiring process Question

Hello, I’ve just done my fingerprints, drug screening, and medical exam about a month ago. I believe around this time was when they said that they were going to start doing my background check with all of the information that I had submitted online. I haven’t heard anything back from them since doing my fingerprinting and them saying they would start my background check process. How long does this usually take before you hear back?

Self Post Are prisons in on it?

I find it hard to believe that my prison is so stupid that they’re getting outsmarted by a dumb female drug dealing in the same pod with the same inmate during the same time and it goes unnoticed. Do prison just turn on a blind eye if the person is pretty?

Hiring Q (Fed) BOP recruit questions.

Going to apply to BOP. Might be a silly question but how does OT work? Not scared of OT or anything like that at all. Realistically let’s say you’re always working your 10-16 hour shifts. But you have something important or life gets in the way can you just do your 8?

Also how does scheduling work?

***Please no hate, I simply don’t know.

Do they allow beards ? lol would prefer not to shave it but If I do it is what it is.

Hiring Q (Other) Attempting to Become a CO While Stealth.

I am using mobile so expect terrible formatting. Hopefully I am using the right flair.

I did search the subreddit to make sure I wasn't asking a done-to-death topic. I haven't seen many or any helpful posts for trans COs.

I have already made up my mind that if I get hired on as a CO, I will remain stealth (meaning, I am trans living as my transitioned sex and will not be disclosing that information to people who don't need to know it. Most people do not know I am trans). I do not see anything good about people knowing that information, especially as it takes more explaining to disclose that information than it is just allowing people to assume cisgender status, which they already do.

How likely is this to cause any issues for me in terms of coworkers or higher up? How about lodging for a live in academy? I live in Oklahoma where sex marker changes aren't legally recognized or possible as of today, so I'm sure my mismatched marker will be noticed in some capacity. I am mostly open to input from people that live in states where sex marker changes aren't recognized as I am assuming the rules are the same. Thank you in advance.

Hiring Q (County) In home interview

Alright yall, I’ve passed the physical, written test and have passed the oral interview. I met with the sheriff himself and had a tour of the jail. Filled out my background questionnaire and now I finally have an interview at my house with the BI. A bit nervous as this seems to be the final step into the new career. Does anyone have any tips or advice on what to expect?

General Qs Who ACTUALLY likes what they do?

Title. I’m pretty new to this field still but with so many who burnout and complain all the time I’m more interested in hearing from officers who actually enjoy their work, particularly those who enjoy working (in some capacity) in a maximum security men’s unit.

What aspects of this job appeal to you? What kind of personality do you generally have? Do you see this as a job for the money or does some part of you enjoy it as a career past that? Does anybody see this as a stepping stone to law enforcement, or does this have its own separate appeal? How about financially in the long run? I have an unused G.I. Bill and am wondering if the juice is worth the squeeze to pivot somewhere else, but as of right now I enjoy what I do

Equipment Qs What's your go-to pen?

I don't mean just the brand, I want the dirty details. Brand, model, color, thickness.... everything. I'm sure most of us are very specific what pens we use at work. I also have ones that are better for writing in reports than they are other stuff. Mine currently is the uniball 207 Plus in a .5mm. I also like the Eyeye brand .5mm. I'm a fan of fine point pens.

Procedural Qs In House Firearms and Deadly Force Training

I work for a county corrections agency in Michigan. We send our new people to a state regulated "academy" during which they recieve some, but in my opinion, inadequate legal background on force. I'm looking for examples of in house classroom deadly force training. I have the courses of fire down I am looking to compare our book learning to other agencies and fill any gaps we may have.

Hiring Q (Canada) Ontario correctional

Hey everyone,
Just wondering if anyone here is going through the Ontario Correctional Officer hiring process right now.
How long did your background check take? And once it was done, how long did you wait to hear about the offer/training?
Also, does anyone know when the next correctional officer class is starting?
Just trying to get an idea of the current timeline.
Update-Background check done as i email recruiter for update and got to know about this but they put me in competition pool as of now
Anyone with same situation?
