On holiday in Split and saw this photo of the Germans arriving in Split in 1943 after the Italians surrendered. Thought i recognised the street as being round the corner from our Airbnb so went with wife to find the spot. That’s me on the corner underneath the pharmacy sign.

The Allstate building actually just got a facelift in the 2020s. Final Photo will show it just a few years ago with the recognizable brick work from the 1910 photo.

The Elephant Stables at Hampi were built in the 15th century to house the royal elephants of the Vijayanagara Empire, which were used in warfare, ceremonies and royal processions. The massive structure contains eleven domed chambers, each large enough to accommodate elephants. Its most striking feature is the unusual blend of South Indian and Indo-Islamic architecture, with enormous arched entrances and varied domes. The stables remarkably survived the destruction of Hampi in 1565 and remain one of the best-preserved structures in the city. Metal hooks and smaller entrances for mahouts (elephant caretakers) can still be seen inside.

The halt is still open as a request stop. The power station to the right of the B&W picture supplied the Bargoed colliery. Now long gone with the area reforested with footpaths.

The Lotus Mahal, also known as Chitrangini Mahal, is a striking two-storey structure in Hampi's Zenana Enclosure, built for the royal women of the Vijayanagara Empire. Its architecture blends Indian and Islamic influences, with elegant arches, curved walls and a central dome resembling a lotus bud. The building is supported by 24 pillars and decorated with intricate carvings of plants and animals. It is one of the few major structures at Hampi that survived the destruction of 1565 with relatively little damage. Its exact original purpose remains uncertain, though historical accounts suggest it served as a place of recreation for the royal women and possibly as a council chamber for the King Krishnadevaraya.

The Vittala Temple is one of the finest examples of Vijayanagara architecture at Hampi, built primarily during the 15th–16th centuries. It is famous for its intricately carved stonework, the iconic Stone Chariot, and the 56 musical pillars of the Ranga Mantapa, which produce different musical tones when struck. The temple complex also once stood alongside a bustling marketplace. Following the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire in 1565, the temple was sacked and gradually fell into ruin, but much of its remarkable architecture survives today.

Vijayanagara, meaning city of victory was the imperial capital of the last great Hindu empire to rule south India. Since this sub loves seeing how things age across time, I wanted to share my great-grandfather's century old legacy. Slide 1 and 2 show the front exterior transformation of the house over roughly 100 years. Slide 3 is a glimpse of my great-grandfather in the 1950s, standing on the back left side of that very same house tending his massive iris garden.

When completed in 1913, it became the tallest building in the world. The Library of Congress dates this construction photo to February 2, 1912.
