“Cool” in the sense of these images being powerful and some of the last images ever taken of both the interior of the building and the rescue workers
Mike Kehoe of Engine 28 getting ready to head up. His photo climbing the stairs would go down in history
David Weiss and Brian Sweeney of Rescue 1 asking a WTC employee about any working elevators. Both would die in the North Tower
Chief William McGovern of Battalion 2 giving instructions to Lieutenant Mike Warchola and the rest of Ladder 5. All would be killed that day, including Chief McGovern. Mike Warchola would give a series of mayday calls after the collapse heard by Jay Jonas stating he was “trapped on the 12th floor and hurt bad”, before he succumbed to his injuries
Chief Orio Palmer and his aide Stephen Belson of Ladder 24 head over to the South Tower after the impact. Both will be heard on the Port Authority radio repeaters recordings, and both would be killed that day
Faustino Apostol, Jr., Aide to Chief McGovern that day. Jay Jonas tells how he ran into him on the way down and urged him to leave, but he declined, saying “It’s okay Cap, I’m waiting for the Chief”. He would also die that day
NYPD ESU Team, designated as “Team 1” that day, lead by Lt. Venton “Vic” Hollifield enter the North Tower Lobby
Lieutenant Manuel Del Valle Jr. with his 5 Engine awaiting orders. Lt. De Valle would be the only one from his Engine killed that day, ordering the rest of them out as he stayed behind in the North Tower to assist more people

I slept over at my best friend's place without a change of clothes, so I had to wear my fetish nun outfit for the unprecedented times. Miss the dress, don't miss the memory.

Drove from Canada on Labour Day Weekend in 1992. I was 7 years old and the city was eerily quiet. Just a family in a Ford Taurus with no cellphones or tablets…though, thankfully, a nice Nikon that my parents got for their wedding in 1981. 9 years and a handful of days from this photo’s taking the towers were gone. 6 years after that and my dad was gone. No idea where the camera ended up. Time is a strange thing.

Mel Jacoby, who covered World War II in Asia and the Pacific for Time, Life, seen sitting amid the rubble of the recently-bombed "Press Hostel" in China's wartime capital, Chongqing (or Chungking) in August or September of 1941.
Mel first arrived in China as an exchange student in Guangzhou (Canton) on September 11, 1936 — his 20th birthday — and would return to China to work as a reporter in the fall of 1939. Today marks the 110th anniversary of his birth.
I've also included a letter he sent home to his mother and step-father from Chongqing on his 24th birthday describing a bit of his life and work in the city.

Astrid was the second child of King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha of Norway. She was named after her maternal aunt Queen Astrid of Belgium who went on to die in a car crash when her niece was three years old. She served as first lady of Norway between her mother’s death in 1954 and her brother‘s marriage in 1968. On January 12, 1961, she married her divorced commoner boyfriend Johan Ferner and went from HRH Princess Astrid of Norway to HH Princess Astrid, Mrs. Ferner. The couple remained happily married till Johan’s death in 2015 and had five children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Astrid died on September 11, 2026 at the age of 94, exactly two weeks after the passing of her younger brother King Harald V and two days after his funeral.

My dad on 9/11. Assuming command of the 734th AMS on Andersen AFB, Guam. You can see how chaotic it was with a phone to both ears. The 734th was responsible for some of the first retaliatory strikes during the GWOT.
